What is Corian? First introduced in 1967, Corian is the original solid surface material and the market leader. Corian is a Premium Brand manufactured by DuPont, one of the world s largest corporations Corian offers a solid, homogeneous and non porous surface It has inconspicuous, unobtrusive and seamless joints Corian is made from acrylic resin & mineral filler Composition : Aluminum Hydroxide, a bi-product derived from the natural mineral, bauxite in aluminum production Acrylic Polymer Pigment Resin
How is it manufactured?.. The raw materials are stored in giant silos before being mixed together to create the batch. Once ready, the mixture is run through a continuous production line that creates uniform sized sheets. The sheets are cut into uniform sizes, degassed and baked, then quality checked prior to despatch to the fabricator.
How is it fabricated?.. The worktops are then cut from the raw sheet material using one of our Beam Saws. Once cut to size, any cut outs, rebates, curves or shapes are machined by one of our CNC machines. The material is then passed to one of the trained fabricators to assemble into worktops. Once completed they are sanded, dry fitted and QA checked. They will then be packaged ready for despatch and installation.
Technical Points to note Corian is a 12mm solid surface that sits on a moisture resistant MDF subframe, with a glued downturn an illusion of a solid 37mm material is given. Corian joints are inconspicuous and unobtrusive but not invisible. Dark heavily pigmented colours will show scratches, dust and ordinary wear and tear more readily than light or textured colours, these colours should not be used in high traffic areas.
Technical Points to note Due to thermal expansion, Corian can expand up to 1mm per metre. A gap of at least 3mm should be left at each end of the worktop when fitted, and filled with decorators caulk. When Corian is joined to other materials an elastic type of adhesive is required to allow for expansion. Corian has a semi matt finish. Wiping the surface clean will help build up a smoother patina, which helps improve scratch and stain resistance. Please note, drainer grooves are designed to create a vacuum release for items that are placed over the drainer area. Excess water that is retained over the drainer area and in the grooves themselves, needs to be wiped away as is the case with all sink drainers.
Key points & USP s Design opportunities with Corian are limitless The inconspicuous and seamless joints allow for expansive stretches of worktop with unobtrusive joints Corian will not rot under pressure and is difficult to stain, making it easy to clean and maintain Corian has excellent impact resistance It will absorb everyday knocks, whereas laminate and other products could be damaged beyond repair
Key points & USP s With regular use of the Care & Maintenance kit provided, Corian will retain its original beauty and last for many years Corian is a non-porous material, naturally resistant to mould, bacteria and mildew Corian creates a durable, dent-resistant, stain resistant and easily repaired surface In the event of accidental damage Corian can be repaired/restored to its original finish. Corian does not require sealing.
Certification, Quality & Warranty Sheridan are able to offer the DuPont 10 year limited warranty on all Corian products. The 10 year limited warranty is ONLY available through DuPont Quality Network members, such as Sheridan. NSF certified - Leading the movement towards cleaner, safer surfacing materials, Corian has been certified as food safe by International Standards Agency NSF.

Sheridan PLANNING OVERVIEW Think through the experience before you begin!
Joint positions.. Plan the worktop layout to ensure joints don t fall on or within 100mm of cutouts. Wherever possible joints in worktops should fall on a carcass end, not in the middle, this gives added support to a joint. Some Corian colours are directional with veining similar to that of a wood grain. To maintain this appearance, they require mitre joints in corners you must allow 600mm extra worktop to accommodate this. When fabricating large worktops, such as island units in veined colours the joints are waved in the factory to limit visibility. We call this an S joint
Joint positions Where Sheridan are templating, all aspects below will be taken into consideration by the Sheridan templater Joint 100mm min Mitre joint is only permitted on veined colours. Please see previous slide. 10mm radius Joint 30mm 100mm min Joints must be at least 100mm from sink or 120mm from hob cutout. Always use Corian specified butt joints on corners.
Joint positions.. Joints above appliances are acceptable provided front and back support rails are fitted. Where possible, plan joint to fall on carcass ends Joints should never fall on sink or hob cut-outs
Joint positions When Sheridan are templating, all aspects below will be taken into consideration Butt Joint - The standard jointing method for this material. Mitre Joint A mitre joint will only be used with veined colours, extra material will be required.

Mixa / Urban Sinks... Available in the Corian colour of your choice, with a stainless steel base, Mixa sinks and Apollo Urban sinks can coordinate or match your Corian worksurface. There can be a slight variation in colour between sink and worktop, this is due to the material being thermoformed (heated and curved to a tight radius). In order to avoid any colour variance being seen between the worktop and bowl a bevel or moulded edge is suggested, if this is not specified Sheridan will use their discretion as to which detail will be used. Stainless steel sink bases can be susceptible to scratching Please note the Mixa sink images shown on the next slide are R60 sinks, R60 sinks have a 60mm internal radius, R10 style designs with a 10mm internal radius are also available. Urban and Mixa sinks are not available in disclaimer colours

A hot pan platter is also available to protect your worktop A pastry mate or chopping board in the same colour as your worktop will be provided free of charge. Pastry mate Pan rests Hot pan platter
Cut outs further notes.. Splash backs and upstands over 100mm must have a minimum gap from the face to the rear of the hob of: electric 50mm, gas 100mm There must be a minimum of 50mm from the cutout to the front edge Allow a minimum of 50mm from the sink cut out to the front edge Allow a minimum of 120mm between heated cut outs. Integrated hobs must be installed into a Corian worksurface according to Duponts specified guidelines. Additional support is required for ceramic sinks. A cradle will need to be built inside the sink base unit. This would be carried out by the consumers fitter.
Cut outs further notes.. A minimum of 50mm is required between two sink cutouts. Sink cutouts must be placed a minimum of 80mm from the worktop front edge. This is required under the terms of the product warranty. If a waste disposal is fitted to an undermounted sink after installation, additional support will be required, otherwise warranty may be invalidated. This must be addressed by the kitchen fitter/plumber NOT by Sheridan. Note : Stainless Steel Sink Installation Silicone sealant may be rendered ineffective when connecting taps and plumbing in the sink. It is important that the sink is resealed immediately after connection to avoid moisture ingression. This would be carried out by the consumers plumber Failure to do so with invalidate the warranty
Edge Detail.. Corian is available with a choice of standard edge details - Square Single Pencil Round Single Bevel Single Round Single Ovolo Double Pencil Round Single Spanish Double Round Single Imperial
Edge Detail.. A choice of special edge details and inlays are also available - Bullnose Shark Nose Waterfall Visage Rope Detail Chequered Detail Top or Front Inlay Drip grooves are used on Belfast sink cut outs only * Waterfall edge detail would normally be used in front of an undermounted sink and drainer grooves to help prevent water running from the worktop onto the floor.
Overhangs.. Unsupported worktop overhang must not exceed 300mm Maximum unsupported span between units is 600mm. For the rear edge, anything over 600mm requires a support baton fitted to the back wall. Where an unsupported overhang exceeds 300mm, or spans are greater than 600mm, worktops will require a support frame. The support frame is manufactured from 20mm box section steel. Once installed, MDF is adhered to the underside. Standard overhang is 35 mm from the carcass front, not the door 35mm Support Frame Moisture resistant MDF 20mm x 20mm box section steel
Upstands.. Square upstands are fixed on site, with Corian glue or silicone. Coved upstands are manufactured and fixed in the factory. This type of upstand is not suitable for walls where there are large variations in the wall profile. Coved upstands are manufactured by machining a 2mm x 25mm rebate by CNC, which only cuts in a straight line, Sheridan will endeavour to keep as close as possible to the line of the wall however it is possible that gaps may occur at the back of your worktop. Plastering and tiling should be finished after installation. A coved drop section in variable height is also available. Coved 50 or 100mm Square 50 or 100mm Coved 10mm Drop Section
Wall Cladding & End Panels Wall cladding will be manufactured in 12mm thickness material. Wall cladding can also be combined with the 10mm coved upstand. End panels will be of a shoulder housing joint configuration to produce a flush fitting appearance. The height of the end panel will be manufactured to give an extra 10mm in height, to allow for scribing to the floor by the installer.
Handling & Size Limiting factors like access, stairs, service lift size and the fragile nature of the tops should be taken into consideration. For installations you will need to supply additional labour on orders which have worktops larger than 3m 2 or weighing above 130kg. Every additional 75kg requires an extra person to assist with lifting. Sheridan can supply additional labour at extra cost
Damage Prevention Corian is non porous however spills should still be wiped up immediately The use of pan rests or trivets is a necessity to avoid the risk of heat damage Do not cut directly onto your worktop, a free pastry mate/chopping board is supplied in the same colour as the worktop Care should always be taken to protect your worksurface from sharp or heavy items
Damage Prevention Corian is scratch resistant but not scratch proof. Dark heavily pigmented colours will show scratches, dust and ordinary wear and tear more readily than light or textured colours Care should be taken with exposed edges as if caught accidentally chipping can occur. In the event of this happening however, contact Sheridan as it is possible to repair small chips on edges or the surface Cold water must be run into Corian sinks at the same time when pouring boiling water into them.
Care & Maintenance.. The Care & Maintenance instructions that are included in the kit should be read and followed to ensure the worktops continue to look as good as the day they were installed Please read the information carefully and ensure your keep these instructions for future reference. The Care & Maintenance Kit contains all of the items required to help keep the new Worksurfaces in pristine condition. Please ensure you read and follow instructions carefully before using the products in the care kit. Always wear rubber gloves when using chemicals to prevent any cracking, drying or other reaction to your skin.
Care & Maintenance.. Keep your Corian worksurface in first class condition with your Care & Maintenance kit. What's in the Care Kit? Care & Maintenance instructions Stone Guard Cream Cleaner Disposable gloves Micro Fibre Cloth Sanding Pad Abrasive Disc Pad White, Maroon & Grey Stone Guard - is an anti-bactericidal surface cleaner specially formulated to tackle grease and grime leaving surfaces sparkling clean with a residual antibacterial effect.
Care & Maintenance.. Every day cleaning Corian worktops are impervious to liquids however it is always best to clean up spills as they occur. Wipe the worksurface with a damp cloth and the Stone Guard cleaner to remove any oils and fat, buff dry with a soft white cloth. If any stains need further attention, allow the Stone Guard 30 seconds contact time, before wiping and rinsing with the white abrasive pad. If your worksurface has an integrated sink, clean this in the same way as the worksurface. Once a week after cleaning, fill the sink with warm, (not boiling) water, adding 1-2 teaspoons (5-10ml), of household bleach and leave to soak for a few hours, or over overnight.
Care & Maintenance.. Persistent stains (polished surfaces) To remove more persistent stains from the worksurface or integrated sink use the Abrasive Pads provided in the kit. Always use the least abrasive pad possible to remove marks and always rub in a circular motion. Start with the White Pad, rubbing the stain in a circular motion. If this is ineffective, progress to the more abrasive Grey Pad and finally the Maroon Pad. To remove any abrasion marks and to restore the worksurfaces former polish, use progressively less abrasive pads. Always finish by using the White Pad in conjunction with the Stone Guard.
