April 2013 Newsletter President s Message Mike Hoffa I hope everyone made it through the long Columbus winter and are looking forward to spring as much as I am. Though we are at the end of our lunch presentations for the 2012 2013 ASHRAE year, your chapter volunteers are still hard at work planning and organizing the events yet to come this summer. As most of you know the chapter is holding a Wine Tasting Event on May 8 th at the Bridgewater Center. Ticket sales have gone very well to this point, if you haven t gotten your tickets yet please consider joining us for a great evening. Additionally, since our last newsletter the CRC committee has continued to make great strides planning the event for August. Keep an eye out for more details coming shortly as the weekend agenda is starting to firm up. Last but not least preliminary plans are already in the works for the chapter golf outing in September, and the start to next season s lunch presentations in the fall. Thanks everyone for supporting the chapter and enjoy your summer. Young Engineers in ASHRAE Matt Colvin Columbus is proud to announce the Columbus chapter ASHRAE has started a YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) committee. The committee will be hosting several exciting events throughout the 2013 year. YEA is a group of young professionals, ages 35 and younger who are looking to advance the HVAC&R industry and have fun doing it. YEA is for young individuals looking to ensure the future of the society and the industry, build their professional foundation, and network with other professionals. YEA is hosting an event on April 13, 2013 in Cincinnati. We will be meeting in Columbus and taking party busses to The Ohio State spring football game in Cincinnati. If anyone is interested it is only $30.00 per person which includes the game, the ride, and food. Feel free to bring a spouse or friend to enjoy a great time watching great football. Space is limited and time is running out so if you are interested in attending this event, please contact mcolvin@steffens-shultz.com. YEA is also having an evening event during the Region V Chapter s Regional Conference (CRC), in August, 2013 in Columbus, OH. More information will be provided at a later date. Beyond these events the YEA committee is meeting once a month and is looking at hosting smaller events once a month. If you are interested in getting involved in YEA or just want to come to an event and network with fellow professionals please contact mcolvin@steffens-shultz.com. Page 1

Student Activities Hanse Cromer Student Activities has been very busy the first Quarter of 2013. The OSU Chapter had a March Madness Event at Chumley s on campus. A number of student members showed up and enjoyed the OSU victory. The event also made for a great opportunity for members to meet the upcoming President, Vice President and Treasurer for the 2013/2014 school year. Nathan Stoltzfus received the $5000.00 Memorial Scholarship from ASHRAE, the Columbus Chapter presented Nathan with his scholarship at the March luncheon. Congratulations Nathan Recently I had the opportunity to speak at West High School. Twenty-two students from the ninth and tenth grade were present. These young students are part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program. It is very encouraging that these students are involved in engineering on a daily basis and many have aspirations of going to college in some sort of engineering. ASHRAE sent a number of prizes, such as, water bottles, cell phone holders and other small items to pass out the students. The students made paper airplanes and there was a competition on flying accuracy, the winner got there pick of prizes and some chocolate. April 4 th I will be attending Tolles Tech in Plain City, Ohio to discuss Engineering and College to the Computer Engineering Technology program. The Board of Governors will be awarding the Dr. Margaret Drake Scholarship at the April Board of Governors meeting. Research Promotion News Update Jeff Dubecky Reminder: The wine tasting event is Wednesday May 8 th at 6:30 pm. There are still some tickets left and would encourage our engineering community to join us for what will be an enjoyable evening. The tickets are $40.00 each or a full table of 8 seats for $300.00. Please keep in mind that this is going to a good cause promoting ASHRAE research. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 440-409-3061 or you can send an email at jeffd@aircontrolproducts.com. We are also set for our September ASHRAE golf outing again this year. More info to come in the near future Stay Tuned! Page 3
