Careers for Chemists and Materials Engineers at Qenos Chemistry and Materials Engineering graduates generally start their careers at Qenos working in the areas of Product Development or Quality Assurance. Qenos has a state of the art technical centre with sophisticated analytical and processing laboratories. It provides the resources to develop the products that our customers want. As the level of your experience increases, responsibilities within the role expand. Depending on your interests, performance and business needs, transfers to roles in technical service, sales, marketing, plant operations, safety, health and environment, information systems, manufacturing technology or planning provide excellent career development opportunities. Vacation Work at Qenos The Qenos vacation work program is a three month program and is the first step in Qenos graduate recruitment program. Chemistry and Materials Engineering students usually work with either the Technical Centre or Product Development departments. During this time students typically work on one or two major projects and are supported by a mentor and team leader. Projects can range from commissioning new laboratory equipment and developing test methods to evaluating the potential of new polyethylene additives.
Technical Centre The Qenos Technical Centre was built in 1999 and is a premier polymer laboratory. Utilising a highly trained and dedicated staff of Chemists, Engineers and Technicians the Technical Centre plays a key role in evaluating polyethylene product properties, tailoring products to meet market needs and assist in their marketplace development and deployment. The four broad roles of the Technical Centre include testing for Quality Assurance, Product Development, Technical Service, and Plant & Process Support. The Technical Centre is comprised of a physical testing laboratory, analytical testing laboratory and process laboratory. The Physical Testing Laboratory at the Technical Centre
Product Development Product development chemists/engineers manage a range of strategic projects from conception through to commercialisation and provide polymer expertise to customers and within Qenos. Working closely with cross functional teams that can include plant personnel, engineers, logistics, marketing, sales and SHE, product technologists may develop new products or refine existing products to suit different applications. This covers product changes from formulation changes of existing grades to major changes involving new markets and new technologies. In addition, there is the opportunity to support customer trials and assist in troubleshooting longer term polymer issues.
Challenges Qenos presents a number of challenges for its Chemistry and Materials Engineering fields: Balancing the management and coordination of many projects with everyday work requirements and equipment/ business schedules Innovation and/or improvement of experimental methods for testing and characterizing polymers Inter-departmental and cross-functional interactions Oral presentations Writing technical reports The Process Hall at the Technical Centre
