Field Day is ham radio s open house. It is our opportunity to show the public what we do, why we do it and how they can get involved. This year, our club Field Day Chairperson is Phil Dolber (W6WBT). He prepared the following article for publication in the Tehachapi News and the Loop: Amateur Radio field day to demonstrate science, skill and service BY PHIL DOLBER Contributing writer May 8, 2017 Members of the Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise June 24 and 25 at Brite Lake (Pavilion 3), located at 22902 Banducci Road. A special thank you to the Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District for this wonderful venue. Field Day is open to the public, and all are invited to attend. Field Day, the most popular on-the-air Amateur Radio event in the United States and Canada, is a picnic, campout, disaster drill, contest and, most of all, fun. More than 35,000 Ham, in thousands of locations participated in Field Day last year. Amateur Radio, also called Ham Radio, allows people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications. Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have assembled temporary stations in Contact Us Visit us on Facebook! TARAtehachapiamateurradio Visit our Website! public locations, for Field Day, showcasing their skills in technology and communications and demonstrating ham radio s reliability under adverse conditions. With a battery powered transceiver and a wire antenna tossed over a tree branch, an amateur radio operator can communicate around the world at arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio.

tehachapiareahams.yolasite.com Mail: Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association (TARA) P.O. Box 1681 Tehachapi, CA 93581-1681 In today s electronic do-it-yourself environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology, and other scientific disciplines, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters if the standard communication infrastructure goes down, said Sean Kutzko of the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio. Suggestions or Comments Via Mail: The Dummy Load Attn: John Dyer KM6DXY P.O. Box 1681 Tehachapi, CA 93581-1681 Via email: With more than 743,000 licensed amateur radio operators in the United States, Hams are able to provide beneficial public services to their communities, free of charge, for marathons, bicycle races, car rallies parades, disasters and more. Get radio active. With no age limit, there are operators as young as 5 and as old as 100. To earn a technician (entry level) license, one must pass a 35 question written exam after studying FCC rules and regulations, operating practices and some very basic electronic theory. With resources available online, this is fairly easy. For more information, visit arrl.org/gettinglicensed. To: KM6DXY@ARRL.net Subject: The Dummy Load Newsletter Or Click Here The question pool used to prepare the exam is published online and there is no Morse code requirement. Becoming a licensed Ham opens a treasure trove of activities, such as serving your community, building and experimenting with antennas, radio direction finding, voice and digital modes, satellite communications, computer control, remotes, television, moon bounce and worldwide communications, to name a few. Many licensees also enjoy using small, hand-held, radios and repeaters to stay in touch with other local Hams. With local clubs such as TARA, it s easy to get involved right here in Tehachapi. Visit www.tehachapiareahams.yolasite.com. For more Field Day information, email Phil Dolber at w6wbt@arrl.net or visit www.arrl.org/field-day-locator online.

Phil Dolber is a member of the Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association. Pictured here are Dan Mason (AB6DM / T.A.R.A.) and Joshua Dyer (Troop 3, Tehachapi) Get Involved: Amateur Radio Emergency Service The TARA ARES Committee continues to meet on a monthly basis to review the current program and adjust that program to improve our capabilities to assist local and/or national government entities during emergency situations. The current focus during the meetings is to develop a plan to work with the current ARES members in Tehachapi and Bear Valley Springs on Training. Training may include live, practical, exercises on air and involve practice deployments. As mentioned before, members of the local ARES group check into the Net every Sunday night at 7:00pm local time. The Net can be heard on the local repeater listed below. BVS Repeater: 146.700-123.0 Hz Tone W6SLZ Open Machine BVS Backup: 145.580 Simplex ARES is an important part of what ham radio operators can give back to the community. ARES is part of the ARRL. It has not dues and participating in ARES does not require membership in a club or the ARRL. All that is required is a valid FCC license and a desire to volunteer your time to train and prepare for the emergency situation when you will be needed in support of the community. Take just a few moments to listen in on the net. Contact members of the club that are currently participating in ARES. Ask questions. Do your research. Materials can be found online through the ARRL website as well as though the Western Kern County Amateur Radio Emergency Service website.
