UPCOMING WORKSHOPS BOTANICAL BEAUTIES with Sandra Sandvik DATE: Sunday, October 14, 2018 PLACE: Parksville Community Centre TIME: 9:30 4:00 This design has two wall hanging layout sizes to choose from or you could do a table runner with 3 blocks. The flower petal blocks are created with curved foundation piecing. Acrylic templates with be available to help with the curved cutting process. You will learn free form foundation piecing, working with color (your choice of flowers for color inspiration), mitered corners, working with a small design board, making narrow borders and basic free form machine quilting and embellishing to finish your masterpiece! This pattern works up well in Bali batiks, solids and small prints. Or make it modern! COST: $50.00 + $2 for handouts/ pattern QUILTING LEVEL: All levels BARGELLO TABLE RUNNER or PLACE MATS with Fran Henney Choose to make either the Table Runner or the Place Mats. These are a great introduction to Bargello as they make up quite quickly, but yet look stunning. They are from the book Twist and Turn Bargello by Eileen Wright. They use 10 fabrics in one colour group, light to dark. As this workshop is in November, why not consider Christmas fabric? DATE: Saturday, November 24, 2018 COST: $40.00 PLACE: Bradley Centre QUILTING LEVEL: All levels TIME: 9:30 4:00 ***NOTE*** Each participant needs a copy of the book Twist and Turn Bargello by Eileen Wright. Eileen will sell copies of her book for less than any quilt stores, and they will be $25 or $30 depending on the number sold. There are 11 quilt patterns in the book. Workshops are a great way to learn a new technique or just a new way to create something lovely, and we always have a fun day. Please think about joining us. All info is on our website and at the meetings. If you have any ideas for other classes, drop an email to workshops@parksvillequilthousequilters.com. Page 6 Quilt Talk June 2018

QUILT-ALONG A September Start for Our 2018-19 Quilt-Along In September I will be presenting a new quilt-along to follow through the year in 6 parts. It will be suitable for scraps (maybe with a common background) or planned colours. I will have a top made up to view at the September meeting for those who like a visual. Not too difficult but interesting enough for experienced quilters. I hope you will consider following along and we can enjoy the varied results at the end of the year! COMFORT QUILTS Quilt Show, Summer and My First Year Blunders I am excited for the Quilt Show, members have worked so many hours ensuring it will be a success! Since September, we have been pulling Comfort Quilts to showcase in the Comfort Quilt display booth. I hope you enjoy our display of Comfort Quilts. I know I have enjoyed choosing them. The quilts that I have given out this year have been fabulous. You ladies rock! Imagine our excitement Grace, Ruth and myself when we see a kit sewn up that we have prepared. Wow, sometimes our brightness factor is a little over the top and sometimes a little dull. But we are not all rays of sunshine! Our Comfort Quilts will hug the wallflower as equally as they will make a statement for the bright star. My first year was learning, and I made a few mistakes it was all about the learning so... to the ladies who had to be creative when my cutting was just a tad wonky... to the ladies who were shorted a block to the ladies who were blinded by the colour choices... to the ladies who were bored by the fabric colours I thank you..for being good sports, for being creative and for stepping up to the challenges! The comment I hear the most is that our kit patterns are the same old same old boring. Why is that you ask? My answer is that they are easy to cut, they are easy to find matching fabrics for and they are a workable size. We have been trying new patterns, but sometimes they are a little big and then no one wants to quilt them. Hopefully this coming year we will find a new pattern that will inspire you! Share your favourite pattern with us do you have 6 favourite blocks? Maybe we can make a new pattern the possibilities are endless! Our next Comfort Quilt Sew Day is September 29, at the Bradley Centre. We are having a Baby Quilt Sewing Bee! You are not going to want to miss it. This summer I will be having a sort the fabric stash day, then we shall start the kit making process. If you signed up for the Comfort Quilt committee, come and play with the fabrics with us! Email me and get an invite lunch is provided. Thank you...for your continued support of the Comfort Quilts! ~ Chris Kotzian Comfort Quilt Coordinator Volume 39 No. 10 11
