Artist Statement Clare Ross Conversations With Nature I am currently working on a series titled Conversations with Nature, focussing on our environment and the way it is responding to the impact of human activity. For this series, I have allowed plants to fall apart and I have tried to put them back together, with no adhesives, by hand in my studio. As I work with the fruit, stem, seeds or seed pods, the plants seem to decide what they will and won t do, sculptural forms are created and they act like visual messages about the struggle for balance and health in a world increasingly stressed by human activity. As I move between the plant and the camera, and gravity and air flow add to the pressure on the plant, the sculptural forms and the messages continue to change and evolve like a conversation. Nothing is static except the photographs, which are all that remain of our precious and beautiful conversation. This series has been well received, with pieces accepted into juried shows and Elegy of an Anemone winning a coveted Juror s Award at the Latcham Gallery Open Juried Exhibition 2018. This work on this series is ongoing. Graffiti Train The second series displayed here is Graffiti Train, a short-term project that shows the aftermath of a train that has crashed into the woods. What is particularly interesting here is that the collision seems to continue as time goes on. The train crash occurred more than 30 years ago and since that first collision between man and nature, both continue to act on each other. People continue to come into the woods and add paint and scrape away natural growth for their own activities and nature continues to grow around and over most of what people do. People paint over nature and even over each other s work, and nature does the same in endless layers. This series has received popular acclaim, being a favourite for family rooms and teenage bedrooms!
