SEMI-CUSTOM Kitchen & Bath Cabinetry CARE, CLEANING & AJUSTMENT GUIDE exclusively from
Cabinet Care, Cleaning & Adjustment Guide AFTER INSTALLATION CARE After your cabinets have been installed, wipe down all exteriors with a damp cloth to remove dust. Wood cabinet finishes may be cleaned and protected with a commericially available cleaning polish. An emulsion-type cleaner is recommended, as they are formulated without wax, petroleum solvents, or silicones. The extended use of wax polishes can result in a wax film buildup, while the use of silicone polishes can harm the cabinet s finish. As with any wood product, avoid exposing your cabinetry to excessive moisture. Painted Doors: DO NOT USE agents containing acetone, acetate or ethyl alcohol. Avoid using harsh solvents and/or abrasives, such as turpentine. EVERYDAY CARE It is important to wipe up spills and water marks as they occur. Be sure to pay special attention to areas around the sink and dishwasher. Avoid draping damp or wet dish towels over the door of the sink base cabinet. Over time, this moisture can cause permanent water damage to the door. Avoid spray-type polishes containing petroleum solvents, as they are flammable and toxic if swallowed. Use a damp cloth when cleaning normal household spills, and after wiping thoroughly, dry the surface with a lint-free cotton cloth. For stubborn stains, it may be necessary to use a mild detergent with warm water. Be sure to always dry the surfaces that were wiped down immediately. Never use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads or powdered cleansers. Do not allow oven cleaner to come into contact with any part of your cabinets. Do not use a dish cloth to wipe your cabinet exterior, since it may contain remnants of grease or detergents.
WEAR & TEAR Daily use can result in surface damages to your cabinetry. As a convenience, your order includes a touch-up pen and fill stick, to assist you with minor repairs. Small scratches can be covered by coloring with the color matched pen. Deep scratches or gouges can be filled with the color matched fill stick. To use the fill stick, run it firmly along the scratch, applying enough pressure to fill the scratch. Remove excess wax with the edge of a thin plastic card (credit card). Allow wax to dry and buff with a soft cloth. WOOD & FINISH CHARACTERISTICS All face frames, doors*, and drawer fronts* are constructed from solid hardwood. Like fingerprints, no two pieces of wood are alike and differences in color or grain will be present in all exposed solid wood material. Individual species characteristics like knots, mineral streaking, sapping or pinholes, may also be present and are to be expected. See The Natural Beauty of Solid Hardwood information on Page 7 for more details. *Our painted, thermofoil and laminate doors have the same solid hardwood face frame construction with a painted finish. Expansion and contraction of frame may cause hairline cracking at joints but the product performance will not be affected. The door and drawer fronts are solid, furniture grade MDF with a painted or vinyl surface finish. HARDWARE CARE Use mild soap and warm water to clean door, drawer knobs and pulls. Thoroughly dry hardware surfaces after cleaning. DO NOT use silver or brass polish. AVOIDING EXCESSIVE HEAT SELF CLEANING APPLIANCE WARNING: Self-cleaning range ovens and built-in ovens generate heat exceeding 900 degrees during a cleaning cycle. The integrity of the appliance seal or gasket may be compromised due to age or improper alignment, allowing heat to escape that can damage your cabinetry. We recommend removing doors and/or drawers from cabinets adjacent to, directly above or below an appliance during a cleaning cycle to help prevent possible damage to the cabinet s finish or surface. For thermofoil or laminate door styles, we recommend installing a heat shield on adjacent cabinets. HUMIDITY LEVELS & YOUR CABINETS Your home s humidity levels can be expected to affect your cabinetry doors and drawer fronts. As reported in USA Today, 45% home humidity is the ideal for your comfort and health. The same can be said for your cabinetry. Since your doors and drawer fronts may be (depending on the style you ve purchased) constructed from solid wood, expansion and contraction will be naturally occurring and your cabinetry is designed to handle these changes. Homes with less than 30% humidity create an environment conducive for wood panel shrinkage which will be evidenced by the appearance of a white halo look around door and drawer front center panels. Returning your home to the proper humidity level will rectify this problem. If you choose to maintain your home humidity below the recommended standards, you may elect to use the touch-up pen provided with your kitchen to color the exposed halo area. For glazed finishes, a black Sharpie pen will blend the glaze accent areas. LIGHT EXPOSURE Exposure to UV light over extended periods of time, will alter your cabinetry color. This shift in color is a natural occurring event which adds to the character and charm of solid wood.
SHELF PINS DRAWER FRONT ADJUSTMENT Cabinet shelves feature locking shelf pins. To release, simply push in the tab and lift the shelf 1 2 While drawer is locked on runners, rotate tab to raise or lower drawer front on either side. If additional adjustment is required, loosen screws and twist drawer front for proper alignment. Tighten screws securely. DRAWER REMOVAL/ADJUSTMENT Partially open drawer to get access to underneath. Reach underneath drawer box at front and locate runner releases on each side of drawer box. Squeeze release tabs and remove drawer box from runners. A B The drawer box will release from the runners. To adjust runners from side to side, grasp runners at rear of cabinet and slide to desired position. To lock drawer box back in place, set the drawer on the runners and fully close until you hear the click of the runners locking into the release tabs. Open and close repeatedly to align runners and ensure lock.
ROLL-OUT TRAY RELOCATION/INSTALLATION 1 2 Determine location desired and install plastic back boot in pre-drilled holes. Attach with screws. Repeat on opposite side. Slide runner into back boot. Repeat on opposite side. In a standard Base Cabinet there are two locations a Roll-out Tray can be installed, indicated by the two sets of pre-drilled holes on the back panel. 3 4 Attach runner to inside edge of face frame. Note the roller wheel is positioned at the bottom with the opening up. Repeat on opposite side. Install roll-out tray. ADJUSTING THE DOOR ALIGNMENT - WITH PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER HEIGHT For vertical door adjustment loosen center screw on each hinge. Set door at desired height. Re-tighten each screw. SIDE TO SIDE Rotate front screw for horizontal door adjustment. DEPTH Rotate back screw for front to back door adjustment.
EASY REACH CORNER CABINET DOOR ADJUSTMENT DEPTH Rotate the back screw (circled) for front to back door adjustment. SIDE TO SIDE Rotate front screw (circled) for horizontal door adjustment. SOFT CLOSE DOOR ADJUSTMENT The Soft Close feature is ON when the switch is towards the "-" symbol. The Soft Close feature is OFF when the switch is towards the " " symbol. MULLION DOOR SPACERS Double door cabinets can have a gap between the mullion doors that can be decreased by installing supplied hinge spacers (circled). Remove hinge from face frame, install spacer and tighten hinge screw. Repeat for all hinges. For final door gap adjustments, use a Phillips screwdriver on the sideto-side adjustment screw (arrow).
MULLION DOOR OPENINGS FOR GLASS The dimensions listed below are spaces in each size mullion door, by door style type. The glass inserts you choose should be slightly undercut to ensure a proper fit. Always double check the openings in your doors before ordering glass inserts, as specifications may change. 8 THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF SOLID HARDWOOD CABINETRY ANATOMY RAIL Your cabinetry may be constructed from several pieces of solid hardwood. Solid wood cabinet face frames, doors and drawer fronts consist of vertical members called stiles, and horizontal members called rails. The other component is the center panel. CENTER PANEL STILE Solid wood center panels are made up of several individual hardwood pieces, known as staves. These staves vary in width and are glued up to create large width panels that can be machined and profiled to create the desired look for the style of the cabinetry. The dotted lines on the photo below left, define the three (3) staves in a sample door center panel. A solid wood door will contain seven (7) or more pieces of solid hardwood which gives your cabinetry a distinct and refined look. COLOR VARIATION SAPWOOD HEARTWOOD Trees consist of two (2) types of wood: heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood is old growth found in the core of the tree, and sapwood is newer growth found in the outer perimeter of the tree. Heartwood is typically darker and transitions to a lighter color as it moves toward the sapwood. Cabinetry component pieces are randomly selected from heartwood and sapwood to create a mix or blend of material to showcase the beauty of the wood and prevent the finished cabinetry from looking artificial or monochromatic. The door shown at the left is a beautiful example of the marriage of these hardwoods. HEART SAP TRANSITION
GRAIN VARIATION Grain in wood is caused by annual growth rings, wood rays, and other cellular structures contained within the wood. Grain runs vertical, or in the direction of height growth and is used to describe alignment and various patterns that may appear in your hardwood. The most common grain patterns are: fine or straight, cross, wavy or curly and arch. Injury to a tree can affect grain patterns creating very unique and exquisite patterns. Injury may be the result of stress, weather, birds or insects. The trees reaction is to produce a wart covering called burl to protect itself. It is from the burl that we see unusual grain patterns like fiddle back, tiger stripe and cross fire. Any or all of these patterns may be present in your cabinetry making it truly, one of a kind! FIDDLE BACK OR CROSSFIRE CROSS WAVY OR CURLY FINE OR STRAIGHT ARCH BURL
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Your cabinetry may also have some species characteristics like closed knots (1), a blackish-blue streak called mineral streak (2), telegraphing (3), where some darkened grain shows through the stain or small brownish dots called birds eye (4). 1-CLOSED KNOT 2-MINERAL STREAK 3-TELEGRAPH 4-BIRDS EYE None of the characteristics pictured are to be considered flaws, blemishes or imperfections, but rather, examples of the beauty of Mother Nature. These are the same variations that will be found in granite, slate, marble or stone, which cannot be fully replicated with man made materials. It is for this reason that these characteristics cannot be considered for warranty replacement. Please remember that we do not make the wood, what we do is make the wood beautiful! THE ARTISTRY OF GLAZE AND PAINT FINISHES STAIN/GLAZE HEAVY HANG-UP LIGHT HANG-UP Glaze is a hand applied accent over a stain base coat designed to accentuate the detail of each door and drawer front and replicate the look of antique furniture. There will be a natural variation from door to door of glaze color highlights in the grooves of the door frame as well as hang-up in corners of the frame. Because of the hand applied nature and technique of this finish, no two doors will have the same level of glazing. It is therefore very important to look at your cabinetry as a whole rather than focusing on an individual door, as the mix or blend of all doors will present a balanced unique look.
PAINT/GLAZE Glaze accent is applied over a painted base coat. The glaze application process is the same as with a stain base coat and you will find the same groove highlights and hang-up in corners as detailed above. LIGHT HANG-UP HEAVY HANG-UP Your home s relative humidity may cause some hairline cracks at the joints in the painted finish surface on doors, drawer fronts, and face frames. This is a natural occurrence and does not diminish or weaken the strength of the joints. These hairline cracks occur in all finishes, but are more visible in painted finishes. CARING FOR PAINTED MDF CABINETRY After your cabinets have been installed, wipe down exteriors with a clean damp cloth. Work on a small area at a time and thoroughly wipe dry. Shaker Polar White Flat Panel Polar White DO NOT USE agents containing acetone, acetate or ethyl alcohol. Avoid using harsh solvents and/or abrasives, such as turpentine, as they may break down bonds on edge banding. If you use ammonia-based cleaners, be sure to dilute the mixture before use. We recommend against using waxes or products containing wax because it may lead to discoloration. If a damp cloth does not sufficiently clean an area, we recommend a non-detergent, non-abrasive household cleaner
