Please come ready to share your knowledge. The positive aspect of this is everyone, no matter what your background or experience level, has something to share. Depending on how we are doing on time, we'll open the floor to a question and answer period. The Call of the Lathe CAW President: Tom Boley The Call of the Lathe has been mighty strong in Springfield the past few days. I really did leave NCIS on 20 Aug, retiring once again after two and a half years back on the job following 9/11. So now I am a full-time woodturner working at a feverish pace trying to do too many things at one time. And I thought it would be easy! I have about a hundred roughturned bowls and trays which I must finish. I need to do 150 bottle stoppers and 150 fan pulls. I also need to do 50 pens or so. At the same time, I am trying to continue some rough-turning from my stock of wood which is clogging the driveway, the garage, and the basement. Add to that the need to develop a nice brochure about one aspect of my business, organizing overall the business aspects of my business, enhancing my marketing plan, coordinating paperwork for the Fall craft show cycle, improving my craft show furniture such as shelves and other displays, and you can see that the life of a full-timer is not just hanging out at the lathe. But I think this will be fun. It is not all woodturning, but enough of it is that I am very excited about what is to come. I have some ideas which I want to try but may not be able to take the time to experiment with new stuff until January. I ll keep you posted as this new life of mine continues to evolve. We have so many members who are so faithful to CAW and who do a huge amount of work behind the scenes in support of our organization, that it is impossible to properly highlight and extol their contributions. However, I do want to name a couple of gents who support our club in everything they do and are somehow involved with CAW or CAW-related activities nearly every day. CA Savoy and Don Riggs deserve special recognition as they go about their normal tasks on our behalf. They are the ones who went to Mt. Vernon with chain saws to cut up the white ash which we were asked to prepare as gifts for the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association to give as gifts to their key donors. They brought it all back to the school, end grain sealed it all, and coordinated both passing out the wood and collecting the turned pieces to give to Mt. Vernon. They coordinate the skill enhancement sessions twice a month and keep the equipment working. One of the costs which they personally incur is that they are asked from time to time to do some kind of labor to help the school. For example, on Friday, 3 Sep, they spent the better part of a day installing new shelves in the school library. This is the kind of effort they do for us which we rarely see but this is one of the reasons we can use the school. I am most grateful for this and know that you are, too. CA and Don, thanks so much for all your time and effort in support of CAW. \ Tom Boley Bring plenty of money on Saturday!! A truckload of exotic woods, brought back to the CAW from the July AAW Symposium, will be available for your purchase and enjoyment. Buy early and a lot

3 September 2004 Page 3 Making Whistles By: Keith Taylor Something for the children. Well yes, but not only for children. I make whistles for the ladies as well. By fitting a key ring on the end, this then becomes a useful article, and to some extent a piece of safety equipment. If the whistle is made correctly it is capable of producing a very loud piercing sound so a warning. If you do intend to make these and give them to the children, make sure the children live at least two streets away. If you make them longer, and the hole deeper, the sound will be more mellow and if you want to advance further a block of wood with four holes drilled to different depths will make a sound more like a diesel train whistle, or you could even go further, and make a pan flute. Enough of this dreaming let's get started. Choose a piece of timber carefully, a good dense timber with perhaps an oily base, would be best; but any reasonable timber will be OK. Remember moisture could be blown into the whistle. The size, is not very important, about 25 mm (I inch) square and as for the length, as long as it's more than 40 mm (1.5 inches) long you are in business. holes in the end. Front the drill up to the center pop mark and the tail center pop mark to the tail stock s live center. With a brass rod replacing the drill, push the timber on the rod and bring up the tailstock. When you have almost finished the shape, withdraw the tailstock and finish the end off. If you want to make it as a key holder, turn a small knob on the end and later drill a small hole in the end, from each side at an angle to suit the key ring. Now is the time to be creative (as all wood turners are). Beyond the mouth area is YOUR design, but the mouth area is best if you follow the diagram. So there is some latitude there somewhere. Before removing the whistle from the lathe, sand the surfaces and using your favorite polish finish off. Then remove the whistle from the lathe and follow the instructions on cutting out the mouth. HINT Using a length of dowel, insert it into the hole and place the protruding end in the vice. This will hold the whistle while cutting the mouth. While still in this position and using a fine file clean up the saw cats IT IS NOW TIME TO MAKE THIS WOODEN WHISTLE WHISTLE First, a piece of dowel about 35 mm long that will be a snug fit into the hole. Insert the dowel into the hole as far as the saw cut and with a pencil draw a line across the end of the dowel (see diagram), now remove the dowel and remove the small amount of wood as shown shaded. Mark the centers on each end of the timber. I use an engineers automatic punch to indent the center spot, it gives a starting spot for the drill and the tail stock {see photo}. Drill the hole, using a 3/8 inch drill to the depth of 35 mm. (That sure is mixing up the measurements; but that's the way it goes). Because I have a piece of 3/8 inch brass rod I use a 3/8 drill, but if you have a piece of 9 mm brass or steel you must then use a 9 mm drill. Wrap a piece of tape around the drill at 35 mm as a depth gauge and drill the hole as per photo. I find this method the most actuate way to drill Although I don't measure the size anymore the whistles still work well. Reinstall and test. Blow into the mouth piece and adjust the dowel in and out for best results. Mark the final position of the dowel, remove, put a little glue on the dowel and reinsert to the mark. TEST and leave to dry. When dry cut the excess dowel off sand and polish FINISHED. Keith Taylor Peninsula woodturners Guild Victoria, Australia

6 Turning a Morse Taper Al Hockenbery - Intermediate Woodturning A Morse taper of wood is a simple to make and is quite versatile for holding work on the lathe. One can be turned from a bit of seasoned hardwood (Maple works well) in minutes using a skew or small spindle gouge. 1. Use a Morse taper for a pattern. Mark two rings on the taper. Set a caliper to each diameter. 2. Turn a cylinder and transfer the two rings to the cylinder with a pencil line. Note: there is ample wood on the left. This will be used to form the part extending out of the lathe's spindle 3. Part in to the two respective diameters. Make the relief cut to the smaller diameter side. 4. Form the taper by cutting a straight line from the larger diameter to the smaller diameter line. Sneak up on it by leaving it an 1/8 inch proud on each end and check with a straight edge.
7 5. Refine the taper. Check it with a straight edge. Remove only the high spots. Favor too large over too small. Avoid a concave! 6. Test fit and turn the taper in the lathe spindle. This will mark the high spots with dark rings unless your spindle is quite clean in which case the high spots will be shiny burnished rings. Turn away the high spots and repeat this process until there are no distinct high spots. 7. Round the end of the taper. This is especially important since it will prevent the Morse taper from splitting and mushrooming when you remove it with a knockout bar. Never put a wooden Morse taper into a self-ejecting tailstock. You may have great difficulty removing it. Wooden Morse tapers have been in use for hundreds of years. Mark St Leger's describes making and using a Wooden Morse taper in an AAW journal article: "turning a whistle",15.2: They are especially useful for pin chucks or turning small pieces attached with CA glue. Wooden tapers are a lot cheaper than faceplates or chucks and hold extremely well in the headstock of most lathes.
