Use the product correctly and with care for the purpose of which it is intended. Failure to do so may cause damage to property and/or serious personal injury. Please keep this instruction manual safe for future use. We ve done all we can to ensure this press offers the utmost in safety but you have to do your part. No amount of warning can take the place of good judgement, so make sure it s the first thing you bring to any job. Beyond that here are some tips: Steel and other materials can shatter. Always use protective eye-wear, a full-face impact safety shield and heavy duty work gloves that comply with the appropriate ansi code. If you detect anything that may indicate imminent structural failure stop using the press immediately and inspect it thoroughly. Use a qualified person to maintain the press in good condition. Keep it clean for safe and optimum performance. Bolt the press to the floor if it is to be used on bulky or unstable items. Do not use the press to compress springs or any other item that could disengage and cause a potential hazard. Do not exceed the rated capacity. Never apply excessive force to a work piece and always use the pressure gauge to accurately determine the applied load. Use this press for the purpose for which it is intended. Do not use it for any purpose it is not designed to perform. Keep children and unauthorised persons away from the work area. PAGE 2

3 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Remove ill fitting clothing. Remove ties, watches, rings and other loose jewellery and contain long hair. Keep proper balance and footing, do not over reach and wear nonskid footwear. Only use this press on a surface that is stable, level, dry, not slippery and capable of sustaining the load. Keep the surface clean, tidy and free from unrelated materials and ensure that there is adequate lighting. Inspect the press before each use. Do not use if bent, broken, cracked, leaking or otherwise damaged or if it has been subjected to a shock load. Check to ensure that all applicable bolts and nuts are firmly tightened. Ensure the work piece is centre-loaded and secure. Keep hands and feet away from the bed area at all times. Do not operate the press when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any intoxicating medication. Do not allow untrained persons to operate the press. Do not make any modifications to the press. Do not use brake fluid or any other improper fluid and avoid mixing different types of oil when adding hydraulic oil to the press. Only high quality hydraulic oil should be used. PAGE 3

4 ASSEMBLY Ensure the press and its components suffered no damage during transit and that all components are present. Should any loss or damage become apparent, please contact SGS Engineering immediately. IMPORTANT: Due to the weight of the press components two people are recommended when assembling. IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend that the press be firmly secured to a firm and level bench using suitable bolts (not supplied). IMPORTANT: Do not situate your press where it will be open to the weather as this may damage the hydraulic system. 1. Attach the feet to the frame using the nuts, bolts and washers. 2. With the help of an assistant, lift the frame assembly upright and manoeuvre it to its intended location on the workbench. 3. Insert the ram through the hole in the base plate and secure in position using the locking collar. PAGE 4

5 ASSEMBLY 4. Remove the protective end cap and screw the hose to the threaded connection of the hydraulic ram. Take care not to let any oil escape while connecting the hose. We recommend sealing the thread with PTFE tape. Pressure Gauge Protective Cap Hose 5. Screw the pressure gauge to the connecting nut on top of the ram cylinder ensuring it is tight when the gauge is facing the front of the press. We recommend sealing the thread with PTFE tape. 6. Using the fixing bolts and washers attach the pump assembly to the frame. Fit one bolt first to bear the weight and use the adjustment provided by the upper bolt. The pump can be installed on either side of the frame but will usually be assembled for a right handed press operator. 7. Screw the pump handle into the pump actuating lever. Socket Head Bolts Dipstick point 8. Unscrew the filler plug and withdraw the dipstick. Check that the pump is filled with hydraulic oil up to the level shown on the dipstick. PAGE 5

6 ASSEMBLY 9. Attach the mandrell storage bracket to the side of the frame using the bolts supplied. 10. Store the mandrells (including the adaptor) in their positions on the bracket. 11. Insert the bed support pins into the holes in the frame at the required position. Then lower the bed frame into position on the pins. Mandrell Storage Bracket Bed Support Pins BEFORE USE 1. Before using the press purge any air from the system. Do this by opening the release valve by turning it anticlockwise and pumping several full strokes to eliminate any air bubbles. Re-tighten the release valve before continuing. 2. Check all parts are secure and correctly aligned before using the press. 3. Position the bed at the desired height, so the work piece will be as close as possible to the ram when placed on the bed. PAGE 6

8 FITTING THE MANDRELS Any of the four mandrells provided may be connected to the end of the ram using the adaptor supplied. Alternatively, the basic ram pressure cap can be fitted as shown. Secure the pressure cap by tightening the grub screw with a suitable hex key. If use of a mandrell is required the adaptor must be fitted instead of the pressure cap. Secure the adaptor by tightening the grub screw with a suitable hex key. Select your mandrell according to the size of the work piece bearing surface.the mandrell can then be pushed into the adaptor where the built-in spring clip will hold it in place. Store the mandrells in their postions on the mounting bracket when not in use. PAGE 8

9 OPERATION 1. Place the work piece on the bed. It must be completely stable - support the work piece with packing or shims where required. Heel blocks (arbor plates) are supplied which locate on to the bed. Place the workpiece on a combination of these to give it stability. NOTE: Any packing or shims used MUST be capable of withstanding the pressure that will be brought to bear and MUST be of sufficient size with sufficient surface area to prevent slipping or springing out. Mating surfaces MUST be horizontal so that the force being exerted will not be at an angle. 2. Close the release valve by turning it clockwise until tightly closed. Release Valve 3. Pump the handle to bring the ram very lightly into contact with the work piece. 4. Manoeuvre the work piece so that the desired point of contact is directly beneath the centre of the ram. 5. When satisfied that the workpiece is correctly aligned and is completely stable, slowly pump the handle so that the ram begins to exert pressure on the work piece. Continue to pump the handle whilst standing to the side. Do NOT stand directly in front of the work piece. Constantly monitor the process, ensuring the ram and work remain completely in line and there is no risk of slipping. 6. When the process is complete, turn the release valve anticlockwise in small increments to release ram pressure and allow removal of the workpiece. PAGE 9

10 MAINTENANCE A visual inspection must be made before each use of the press, checking for leaking hydraulic fluid and damaged, loose, or missing parts. Any press which appears to be damaged in any way, is found to be badly worn, or operates abnormally SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE until the necessary repairs are made. If the press is not to be used for any length of time, store it with the ram piston withdrawn and the operating handle in the lowered position to protect the moving parts. Check the press frame to make sure all bolts are tight and inspect for cracked welds, bent, loose or missing parts. Check the hydraulic connections for leaks. Replace or properly repair any damaged or leaking hydraulic components before using. In the event of leaking seals, oil can be topped up via the filler plug at the end of the unit. Oil should be level with the mark on the dipstick. If necessary top up with SGS hydraulic oil. This task is carried out with the ram fully retracted. TROUBLESHOOTING SYMPTOM PROBLEM SOLUTION Pump unit will not work Pump will not produce pressure Pump feels hesitant under load Pump will not lower completely Pump will not deliver pressure Dirt on valve seat/warn seals Air-lock Reservoir could be overfilled or have low oil level Bleed pump unit or have unit overhauled with new seals Open the release valve and remove the oil filler plug. Pump the handle a couple of full strokes and close the release valve. Replace the filler plug. Check oil level by removing the filler plug and topping up to the correct level. PAGE 10

11 CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL The pump on the press is fitted with a thumbscrew which can be turned by hand. To change the oil in the pump please unthread the screw and top up with 46 grade hydraulic oil. AIR PURGE If the cylinder will not lower fully, the pump feels spongy or hesitant then there may be air trapped in the hydraulic system. Remove the thumbscrew as per the above image and pump the handle 5-10 times to purge any air from the system, before refitting the thumbscrew and testing the press. PAGE 11
