Miscellaneous Safety Points and Other Considerations Our products are built for use based on proper installation and normal residential use, on level ground. Please follow the instruction manual when building your Gazebo and retain the manual for future maintenance purposes. Some of the safety and usage measures you may wish to consider include: -snow load ratings vary by geographical location. If heavy or wet snowfall occurs, it is advisable to sweep the snow off the roof(s). -if the product is elevated, any structural and building code requirements are solely the customer's responsibility, and should be abided by. -in high or gusty wind conditions it is advisable to keep the structure securely grounded. -have a regular maintenance plan to ensure screws, doors, windows and parts are tight. Customer agrees to hold Outdoor Living Today Partnership and any Authorized Dealers free of any liability for improper installation, maintenance and repair. In the event of a missing or broken piece, simply call the Outdoor Living Today Customer Support within 30 days of the delivery of your purchase. 3 A. Floor Joist, Post and Rafter Section Long Main Floor Joist 68 7/16 long Measure to center of Plate T Post Mount with Holes Drilled Drilled Holes 1. Locate both the Long Main Floor Joist and the T Post Mount Plate. Angle cut ends must be positioned to the outside. Pre-drilled holes will align with Posts later in Step 10. Please review this step to confirm correct T Post Mount Plate orientation. Use 4 - Carriage Bolts to align Joist with T Plate prior to attaching. Joist must be evenly spaced between bolts. Remove Carriage Bolts when correctly aligned. Joist evenly spaced between bolts. 2. With pieces properly orientated, screw T Plate and Joist together with 2-3 screws. Make sure pieces are flush with each other on the top and bottom. Complete all 8 Long Main Floor Joist and T Post Mount Plate Connections. Once again, check alignment prior to attaching together. 2-3 screws 3. Locate the 5 1/4 Diameter Octagon Core Block. Place at end of one of the Long Main Floor Joists. Page 3

4 4. Position end of joist equally on one side of the Core Block. Toenail with 3-3 screw from the top and sides. Joist and top of Core Block should sit flush with each other. Note, Drill pilot holes in joist prior to screwing to prevent splitting. 5. Lay completed Core Block / Joist assembly on flat level surface. 6. Position and toenail the second joist assembly to opposite side of Core Block. 7. Continue to add joist assemblies to Core Block. Page 4

5 8. At this stage, your gazebo floor should look similar to the illustration to left. Important: You must level your Floor Joists now. Use a level to confirm before proceeding. Angle Cut of Post (high side = inside) 4 Holes Drilled in bottom of each Post 9. Locate 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 Posts. Align first Post so four drilled holes in bottom are align with T Post Mount Plates. Important: Be sure to align Post so top angle cut is high to the inside. Page 5

6 10. When holes are aligned, slide 4- Carriage Bolts from the outside through Post and T Post Mount Plates. Must have Washer 11. From the inside, slide a washer over bolt and tighten nut screw into place. Important: Only snug Carriage Bolts at this stage. After Handrail and Upper Baluster Section are installed, come back and firmly tighten all Carriage Bolts with a wrench. 12. Complete all four T Post Mount and Post Carriage Bolt attachments. Important: Once again, only snug Carriage Bolts at this stage. After Handrail and Upper Baluster Section are installed, come back and firmly tighten with wrench. Page 6

7 2nd Post Plywood Post Spacing Template 13. Locate 2nd Post and Plywood Post Spacing Template. Align and secure Post as per Steps Using the Post Spacing Template, slide between posts as illustrated above. Mid Point 14. Locate Outer Rim Joists (1 thick and angle cut on each end). Position so angle cut ends line up at the midpoint of the post. When correctly positioned, screw Rim Joist to Posts with 2-2 1/2 screw per end. 3rd Post 15. Locate 3rd Post. Align and secure Post as per Steps Using the Plywood Post Spacing Template, position 3rd Post as per Step 13. Page 7

8 Note, be sure to position Outer Rim Joists evenly between Posts. Tolerance Gaps may appear between each Rim Joists. 16. With 3rd Post correctly positioned, align and attach the Outer Rim Joist as per Step 14. Continue to attach Posts and Outer Rim Joists until all 8 are complete. Continue to use Plywood Post Spacing Template to confirm correct spacing. Mid Floor Joist Interior Core Brace (angle cut on ends) 13 1/16 long 17. Locate and position a Mid Floor Joist (53 1/16 long) and a Long Interior Core Brace. Make sure the longer side of Core Brace is flush with the end of the joist and attach together with 2-3 screws. Once again, make sure Core Brace is centered and flush with joist. Complete all 8 attachments. 18. Position a Mid Floor Joist Assembly between Main Floor Joists as illustrated to the right. Once again, Use Plywood Post Spacing Template to align the Mid Floor Joist equally between Posts. Page 8

9 Top flush 19. With Mid Joist correctly aligned, secure to Outer Rim Joist with 2-2 1/2 screws. 20. Secure Interior Core Brace with 4-3 screws. Make sure tops of Interior Core Brace and Main Joists are flush with each other. Flush 21. Locate 2nd Mid Joist Assembly and position and align as per Steps Complete remaining Mid Joist Assemblies. Make sure to use Plywood Post Spacing Template to confirm correct alignment. Page 9

10 23. With all Mid Joist Assemblies secured, screw the T Post Mount into Rim Joist from inside with 2-2 1/2 screws on angles. Be careful to screw on angle so the hardware does not come through Rim Joist. Complete all 8 sides. Important: Use a level to confirm all Floor Joists are level and that the overall Floor is level. Adjust as necessary. Important - Prior to starting the Rafter Section (Steps 24-33), complete the Hand Rail and Upper Rail Sections first (Steps 35-48). Before Upper Rails Sections are secured, Rafters are vulnerable when just sitting on Posts. Page 10

11 24. Locate 8 Skybox Pieces placing them with Dado cut facing out and to the top on level surface. 2 screw 3 screws 3 screws 25. Position 2 pieces together so angle cut ends line up. When Correctly aligned, screw together using 2-3 screws and 1 2 screw in top dado ledge as shown in left illustration. Attach remaining pieces to complete Skybox. V Notch in end Rafter 26. With your helper, lift the Octagon Skybox up with the dado or notch of the Skybox facing up. Place the V end of the Rafter in a corner of Skybox Octagon Skybox Notch on bottom Page 11

12 Important - Depending on the # of helpers you have available will determine how many rafters can be attached to Skybox prior to lifting up. Our illustration shows 4 Rafters = 3 additional helpers. If using only 1 additional helper, attach Rafters as per Step 27 and lift up as per Step 30. Be sure to have Step Ladders ready as you will need them during these Steps. Screw from inside of Skybox into Rafter Rafter should be be placed so flush with top ledge of Skybox. Toenail through rafter into skybox on angle. 27. Secure Rafter with 2-3 screws from the inside of Skybox. Toenail 1-3 screw through rafter into Skybox. Note, drill pilot hole in Rafter to avoid splitting. 28. With your helper still supporting the Skybox, attach a second rafter to the opposite side. Position and secure as per first Rafter. 29. Complete 4 Rafters, each in opposite corners, securing as per Step 27. The partially completed rafter section will be lifted up and placed on Posts. You will require 2 ladders and having an extra pair of hands is very helpful. Page 12

13 Post will sit in notch of rafter. 30. Lift up your partially completed rafter section and place Corner Rafters on top of 4 posts. The Post will sit in the notch of the Corner Rafter. 31. Temporarily tack each Rafter/Post connection together by toe nailing 1-3 screw from rafter side into post. 32. Place a fifth Corner Rafter into place and secure as per Step 27. Step Ladder will be required. 33. Complete remaining Corner Rafters attachments and secure as per Step 27. Page 13

14 B. Hand Rail and Upper Rail Sections Top Hail Rail (large radius edge) Fillet Strip Hand Rail End Caps Hand Rail End Caps Outside Picket (angled on edge) Pickets Bottom Hand Rail 34. Locate all components necessary to assemble both Hand and Upper Rail (Step 44) Sections. Outside Picket (angled edge) Fillet Strip Outside Picket (angled edge) Outside Picket (angled edge) 35. Locate 2 Outside Pickets and position as shown above. Nail a Fillet Strip to ends with 2 finishing nails per piece. 36. Using the width (2 1/2 ) of a Plywood Picket Spacer Template, nail the Fillet Strip and Picket together with 2 finishing nails. Page14

15 Note- the number of Pickets not exactly as shown, 37. Complete remaining Pickets as per Step 36. Important- may consider marking location of each Picket prior to attaching to confirm even spacing and then complete the attachment. 38. Flip section over and position the Bottom Hand Rail Flip section over 39. Align Bottom Hand Rail with Outside angled edges of Pickets. Using 2 screws, attach each Picket end to Bottom Rail. Use the Plywood Picket Spacer Template once again to determine Picket location. Important- Drill Pilot holes in Bottom Rail to prevent splitting. 40. Position Top Hand Rail on top of Fillet Strip and align as per Step 39. From underneath, screw Fillet Strip to Top Handrail with 4-1 1/4 on an angle so screws don t go through Hand Rail. Page 15

16 41. To complete Handrail Section, locate Hand Rail End Caps. Flush 42. Position End Cap flush with Bottom Rail. End Cap should also position evenly from side to side with both Top and Bottom Rails. When correctly positioned, attach with 4-2 screws. Important- Drill Pilot Holes in End Caps to prevent splitting. Also be sure to drill into wood. 43. Complete all Handrail Sections now. Page 16

To assemble Upper Rail Sections, follow Steps Alignment of Filler Strip will be down however. 45. Place Fillet Strip in key slot and of Bottom Rail and attach as per Step 40. Page 17

18 46. Locate Upper Rail End Caps and position on Upper Rails as illustrated here. 47. Attach Upper Rail End Caps with 4-2 screws. Align as per Step 42 (Hand Rail End Caps). 48. Complete all Upper Rail Sections now (8). Page 18

19 49. Locate 1 Upper Baluster Section. Lift up and place between the Rafters and Posts. Hammer Carriage Bolts through holes. 50. Position Upper Baluster Section so Pre-drilled holes of side framing line up with Pre-drilled holes of Rafter. Nut 51. With holes aligned, hammer Carriage Bolt through Upper Baluster Section and Rafters. Do not secure nuts of Carriage Bolts until Step 52. 3rd Carriage Bolt 52. Place a second Upper Baluster Section into place and complete attachment of Carriage Bolt from first Upper Baluster Section. Hand tighten nut only. 53. Hammer in 3rd Carriage Bolt into left side of second Upper Baluster Section. Page 19

20 54. Lift up, position and secure all remaining Upper Baluster Sections following Steps Important - ONLY HAND TIGHTEN BOLTS. 55. On your last Upper Baluster Section, Use the Carriage Bolt from the first section to secure. Once again, only hand tighten bolts. 56. To completely secure Rafter / Post and Upper Baluster Sections, place 2-2 screws from the side framing of Upper Baluster Section into the Posts. 2-3 screws Mid Rafter 57. Lift and position a Mid Rafter (66 9/16 l) end flush against Skybox. Use a straight edge to confirm same height as Corner Rafters. Position Mid Rafter centered on Skybox. When correctly positioned attach rafter to Skybox with 2-3 screws (screw from inside Skybox). Page 20

21 equally spaced on Baluster 58. Equally space Mid Rafter on Upper Baluster Section. Attach 2 Simpson Strong Ties to each side of Rafter screwing into outer edge of Upper Baluster Rail. Use 1 1/2 screws to secure. 59. Complete remaining 7 Mid Rafters following Steps Important- make sure each rafter is properly positioned from side to side and up and down. Flush with Post Doorway Measure 5 from top of Rim Joist 60. Starting on right side of Doorway, position first Handrail Section between Posts. Position bottom of Handrail Section 5 above top of the Rim Joist. Side framing of Handrail Section will sit flush with Posts. Page 21

22 61. With Handrail Section positioned correctly, screw side framing of section and Posts together with 3-1 1/2 screws per side. Position a second Handrail Section between Posts and moving in Counter Clockwise direction. Secure section once again with 3-1 1/2 screws per side. 62. Complete remaining Handrail Sections positioning and securing as per Step In Florida, additional hardware may be required that is not included in kit due to hurricane winds. Please check with local building code to confirm. Tighten with Wrench 63. With both the Upper Baluster and Handrail Sections complete, go back and tighten all the Carriage Bolts in the T Post Mount Plate and Rafter with a Wrench. Be careful not to over tighten bolts. Complete one side and then the opposite side. This will create an equal tightening of all the components. Page 22

23 C. Floor Decking Section Important: If you have purchased an Optional Screen Kit, please refer to Screen Kit Instruction Manual before completing the Floor Decking Section. 12 Octagon has 11 Deck Boards plus 1 Perimeter Deck Board. 64. Locate 8 Deck Board Bundles and 8 Perimeter Deck Boards (with notches). Perimeter Deck Board (with notches) 65. Starting with Perimeter Deck Board, position evenly between Posts. Tack down with 1-2 Screw into Mid Joist. Drill pilot holes in Deck Board to prevent wood from splitting. All Decking Boards will be completely secured when all boards are positioned. Page 23

24 66. Place 2nd Perimeter Deck Board in place and secure as per Step 65. Complete all Perimeter Deck Boards now. small notch 67. Next, position longest Deck Board on Floor Joists. These Deck Boards have a small notch cut in each corner. Drill Pilot Holes to prevent wood from slitting on ends. (6 holes per Board). Can drill now or later when completing attachments. Mid Point of Joist=3/4 68. Position Deck Board so it sits equally on Main Joist (just under 3/4 ). Important- Deck Boards must sit approximately equally on Main Joists in order to complete a row. Spacing between the edges of Boards may vary slightly to achieve best fit. Tack down each Deck Board with 1-2 screw. Working in Clockwise direction, position and tack down another Deck Board. Page 24

25 69. Complete row of Deck Boards working in a clockwise direction as per Step Continue to align Deck Board ends equally on Floor Joists. 70. Start third row of Deck Boards. equally aligned on joist 71. Position and tack Deck Board as per Step Once again, make sure board is aligned equally on both Floor Joists. 72. Complete row of Deck Boards working in a clockwise direction as per Step Continue to align Deck Board ends equally on Floor Joists. Page 25

26 73. Start next 5 rows of Deck Boards.Position and tack Deck Board as per Step Once again, make sure board is aligned equally on both Floor Joists. On last board, tack on both ends. Pilot hole first. 74. Position last row of Deck Boards. Place the Octagon Center Deck Piece into position. When satisfied with positioning, complete screwing last row of Deck Boards (Total of 4 screws). Pilot hole to prevent splitting. Be sure to Pilot Hole! 75. Secure Octagon Center Deck Piece with 4-2 screws. Pilot hole once again to prevent wood from splitting. Once all Deck Boards are in place and positioned to your satisfaction, completely secure each Deck Board. Use 6-2 screws on longer Deck Boards and only 4 on the shorter boards. Page 26

27 D. Roof Section 17 3/4 76 7/8 69 1/4 76. To complete the roof section, 1 Roof Jig will be assembled initially and then used to complete each of the 8 Roof Panels. Locate all 4 pieces and assemble as illustrated above. Use 2 1/2 screws to assemble. 2 screws in each top and bottom corners. 77. Place Roof Jig on a flat and level surface with room to work. Locate Shingle Roof Overhang Spacer (Plywood). 78. Lay the Roof Overhang Spacer tight against the bottom of the Roof Jig. Page 27

28 79. From one of the Ceiling Board Bundles, locate the longest Ceiling Board and place tight up against the Roof Overhang Spacer with the Roof Face down. (Manufacturing Lines in boards will face up). The Rough Face will be the visible side when inside your gazebo. Square Cut 80. The longest Ceiling Board will be square cut on longest side and have a lap on the other. When in place, locate the next longest board and orientate the board as per Step Align Ceiling Board against the sides of the Roof Jig and also so lap covers the first Ceiling Board. Locate the 3rd Ceiling Board orientating as per Step 79. Page 28

29 82. Align as per Step 80. Continue to add more Ceiling Boards. 83. Make sure to align with rough side facing down. Position the remaining Ceiling Boards. 1-2 gap to filled later in Step With 14 Ceiling Boards in position, a gap will exist where the shortest board and Jig frame meet. The Last Ceiling Board (15 1/8 long) will be installed later in Step Locate Role of 40 wide Roofing Paper. Unroll and lay down on Ceiling Boards. Do not cover Roof Overhang Spacer with Roofing paper. Page 29

30 Roll of Roofing Paper cut for next Roof Section. Discard Do not cover Roof Overhang Spacer. 86. With a Utility Knife, cut the Roofing Paper inside the Roofing Jig on both sides. Roofing Paper not exactly as shown in illustrations. 87. Using another strip of 40 wide Roofing Paper, unroll and lay down on upper Ceiling Boards. Roof Paper will overlap. Cut as per Step Locate Ceiling Board Nailing Strips (1/8 thick x 1 1/2 wide). Position tight against Roofing Jig. Nail into Ceiling Boards with 12-1/2 nails. Complete both sides. Page 30

31 89. With both nailing strips secured, carefully remove Roofing Jig. Do not exceed Ceiling Boards 90. Locate a Bundle of Angle Cut and Long (24 ) Roofing Shingles. Place 1 Angle Cut Shingle flush on edge of Ceiling Boards and Roof Overhang Spacer. Important - Do not exceed the outside of Ceiling Boards. Using 2-7/8 long Roofing Nail, secure shingle. 91. Position and attach adjacent Angle Cut Shingle as per Step 90. Open a Bundle of Long Roofing Shingles and select the least visually appealing pieces. These first row of shingles are called the Undercourse and will be covered by the next row. Page 31

32 Nailing line 6 from Butt 1/4 to 3/8 gap 92. Adjust shingles for best fit. Place and secure so there is approximately 1/4 to 3/8 gap between each shingle. Sort through shingles to find last shingle on row for best fit. When shingles positioned correctly, nail each with 2-7/8 Shingle Nails. With utility knife, score outside edge if overhanging. Undercourse Shingles 1st Coarse 93. Lay down 2nd row of shingles (1st Course) directly on top of Undercourse row. Select Shingles that overlaps gap between Undercourse shingles by approx. 1. Use same procedure as Steps Overlap by 1 9 Nailing Line 94. When correctly positioned, attach 9 from butt with 2-7/8 Shingle Nails per shingle. Important- Shingle Exposure is 7 1/2. Do not nail below the exposure line. Page 32

33 Shingle Exposure Spacer 95. With utility knife, score outside edge of shingle if overhanging. 96. Place Plywood Shingle Exposure Spacer flush to bottom of 1st Coarse of Shingles and temporarily nail in place. 2nd Coarse 9 Nailing Line 97. Lay down 2nd Coarse shingles butting them up against Spacer. Use same procedure as per Steps to position and secure shingles. 3rd Coarse 98. Once again, with a utility knife score outside edge of shingle if overhanging. Remove Shingle Exposure Spacer and re-position on bottom the 2nd Coarse. 38 111. After all Roof Panel Sections have been positioned and partially secured, slight adjustments to some panels may be necessary to achieve best fit. Remove previously secured bottom screws installed in Roof Panels and re-position if necessary. Important - Any gaps between Roof Panels will be covered later by Roof Ridge Caps Important - When satisfied with Roof Panel positioning, further secure panels to gazebo. Screw through Roof Panels into Corner Rafters ONLY as per illustration above with 3 screws. Reach through Skybox while securing Roof Panels at the top Locate 64 3/8 long Facia Boards. Facia Boards are angle cut on each end. Place 1 board over the entrance way underneath the roof and against the rafter ends. Facia Board should be positioned so it is flush underneath the roof panel and angle cut end of board should sit halfway on Rafter end. Sits equally on Rafter end Page 38

With the Facia Board positioned correctly on Rafter ends, secure with 2 - finishing nails per side and 2 - finishing nails into the Mid Rafter Position and secure the 2nd Facia Board to end of Rafters as per Steps Important - it is normal for gaps to occur between Facia Boards. Later, Corner Facia Detail Plates will be added to cover any gaps Complete positioning and securing Facia Boards to Rafter ends. Use the same pattern as for the Roof Panel Sections. Place completed Rafter/Facia Section on Side Rail Section Line up Rafter equally on each corner of the Side Rail Section With Rafter/Facia Section positioned equally on Side Rail Section, attach together by screwing with 1-2 1/2 screw per Rafter Locate and place 1st Cupola Roof Panel on Rafters Place Roof Panel so equally centered between Rafters and Flush with Core Block. Attach panel to rafter with 4-2 1/2 screws Place 2nd Cupola Roof Panel in place. Page 43
