As described on the Woodcraft Website: This is a 9 hour class consisting of 3, 3 hour sessions. The purpose of this class is to introduce woodworking from the ground up. The student will build a tool/garden box using a table saw, bandsaw, router and drill press, and will learn gluing and clamping techniques. Session 1 learn about the table saw and how to use it safely to cross cut and rip boards. Session 2 learn about the band saw and how to use it safely by cutting curves. We'll also cover gluing and clamping as well as the use of the router as we route some edges of our project. Session 3 will include more table saw work as well as drilling, clamping and sanding. 2 General Table Saw Safety Rules - 31,000 Reported Accidents Yearly Always wear Safety Glasses!!! ANSI z Keep the guards in place including the splitter or riving knife. Avoid awkward operations and hand positions - if it doesn t feel right don t do it!! and Never cut free hand on a table saw Read the manual supplied by the manufacturer. The blade should be roughly ½ tooth above the work piece. Unplug the saw when changing blades. Don t saw when you are tired or after 2 beers. Use a different saw for cuts that are unsafe on a table saw. Plan the cuts you are going to make before you begin cutting so that you are never tempted to make a cut while holding on to a small piece of wood. Kickback is a common problem - If we know why it happens we can avoid it. But it is good practice to always stand to one side or the other of the blade anyway! The teeth on a 10 table saw blade are traveling directly at you at 100 mph. They can throw anything in their path with great force and speed directly at the operator. WHEN this happens it is called kickback. Kickback can happen whether you are Ripping or Crosscutting. This wall is 20 behind the table saw. It is covered with 1/2" plaster board on 2x4 framing with a concrete foundation behind the plaster. Page Number 2

Process Steps for the Tool Box - Begin with a 1x4 board 6' long (actually 3/4" x 3-1/2" wide) 1. Rough Cross cut 1 piece 30" long ==> to be used for E 2. Rough Cross cut 1 piece 24" long ==> to be used for H 3. Rough Cross cut 1 piece 15" long ==> to be used for F and G When making crosscuts Never cut free hand on a table saw - Use 1 hand to hold the wood against the miter gauge and 1 hand to push the miter gauge. (Do not hold the piece to be cut off) Do not remove cutoff pieces of wood while the blade is moving. Plan the cuts to be subsequently ripped so they will be at least 12 long Process Steps for the Tool Box (Continued) 4. Rip cut the 15" piece into 2 pieces 1-1/2" wide ==> to be used for F and G When making rip cuts Never cut free hand on a table saw - Always use the rip fence when ripping. Use push sticks and always keep the work piece against the rip fence and push it all the way through the cut and beyond the blade. Only rip boards that are at least 12" long. Do not rip stock that is twisted or warped. Process Steps for the Tool Box (Continued) 5. Cross cut 1 of the 15" pieces 14-3/4" long ==> to be used for F 6. Cross cut the 30" long piece into 2 pieces 14-3/4" long ==> to be used for E 7. Cross cut 1 of the 15" pieces into 2 pieces 7-1/4" long ==> to be used for G 8. Cross cut the 24" long piece in half ==> to be used for H When making crosscuts Do NOT Use the Fence as a Stop - Use a stop block clamped to the fence or the miter guage Page Number 3

Session 2 In this session we will learn some basics about the bandsaw and how to use it safely. We will then use the bandsaw to cut the curved pieces that are needed for our project. We will also discuss gluing and clamping and then glue and clamp the pieces of our project as needed. Bandsaws The Upside Safe - compared to table saws Versatile rip, cross cut and saw curves and circles Resawing making thinner boards out of thicker boards Suggested Power Tool Acquisition Sequence From 3 Woodworking Professionals Professional #1 Professional #2 Professional #3 Bandsaw Bandsaw Table Saw Table Saw Table Saw Bandsaw Jointer Jointer Miter Saw Planer Miter Saw Jointer FWW, May 93, No. 100 Bandsaws The Downside Different cuts (resawing vs. curves) require different blades, Each time a blade is changed adjustments must be made/checked. Manage your expectations a bandsaw is NOT a table saw! (you will often need to joint or plane a surface after sawing) Small Blades Large 1/8-3/ TPI Smoother cut, scroll sawing Tighter radius 3/16 rad - 5/16 rad 1/ TPI Rougher cut -resawing stable, straighter cut 2-1/2 rad The bandsaw was patented in 1809 but the blades kept breaking. In 1846 a French woman discovered a way to weld spring steel so that the saws would be practical. Discussion: Why does the bandsaw blade ride on the tires and not slide off? Page Number 4

Blade Width Min. Radius 1/8" 3/16" 3/16" 5/16" 1/4" 5/8" 3/8" 1/2" 3/4" 1" 1 1/2" 2 1/2" 5 1/2" 7" Bandsaw Basic Construction and Operation Guide Assembly Thrust Bearing Neoprene Tires cover the wheels Top Guide Assembly, (adjustable up/down) Guide Blocks or Bearings Blade Riser Blocks Tilting table Throat Capacity Bottom Guide Assembly, (stationary) Page Number 5

Safety procedures for using a bandsaw Wear safety glasses. ANSI z Make sure all guards are in place. Never run the saw with the wheels exposed. Set the upper guide assembly to about 1/4 inch above the stock being cut. Ensure the blade is tracking correctly in the center of the wheels and runs freely.. Do not back the stock away from the blade while the blade is in motion Don t cut small radius curves with blades that are too wide. Make relief cuts before tight curves. Hold stock firmly and flat on the table. Keep hands on either side of the blade. Use a push stick when close to the blade. Do not use excessive force, let the saw cut the wood. Read the manual When Changing Blades - U N P L U G THE SAW Position the blade on the wheels and through the guides. Set the proper blade tension while spinning the top wheel by hand and checking how the blade is tracking. Proper tension is based on blade size and is specified on the saw and/or in your manual. Adjust the thrust bearings so that the blade only comes in contact with them while it is sawing. The guide blocks should be slightly behind the tooth gullets and close to but not touching the blade. Test that the blade tracks properly by spinning the top wheel by hand. NOW CLOSE BOTH WHEEL COVERS and test the saw briefly under power. Back to our Tool/Garden Box Finish up the last cross cuts (if any) from Session I Discuss the glue demo Mark curve with template on scrap and make practice cut Mark curves with template on project wood Cut 4 curves on bandsaw File and sand as necessary Glue up and clamp Route Handle Edges on Router Table if time allows Page Number 6

Session 3 Route Handle Edges on Router Table if not done yet Cut dadoes and grooves for the bottom of the box on the table saw Measure and cut the plywood for the bottom of the box on the table saw Drill clearance holes for screws Clamp and screw 8 screws Glue and attach handle with 2 screws File and Sand Notes on gluing we have seen that glue joints can be stronger than wood you can t stain (or finish) over glue, glue sets fast, you will have 5, maybe 8 minutes clamping is an art - have your clamps ready catch the dripping glue on wax paper or waste paper scrape off excess glue after 30 minutes, better yet don t have excess glue Notes on Glue Joints Joint Name Failure Pounds Half Lap 1603 Bridle /8 Mortise/Tenon 1444 Miter 1374 Butt 473 Source: Fine Woodworking Magazine No. 203 Cherry Wood 3/4 thick Notes on Wood Movement Typical seasonal fluctuation in moisture content of unfinished wood indoors ranges from 4% to 14% A piece of wood 4 x 4 x 40 long will on average fluctuate as follows: Movement Moisture Content 4% Moisture Content 14% % Radial 4" 4-1/ Tangential 4" 4-1/8 3 Length 40" 40-1/32 0 The rationale behind the design and construction of the tool caddy Gluing end grain Wood Movement - How moisture content affects wood. Summary - Don t reach too far past your ability Buy tools as you need them You can buy wood the size you want/need The more woodworking you do, the more you will learn and the better you will become.
