2 1 Gun Parts Catalog INTRODUCTION Some gunsmiths say that reblueing a firearm with the hot salts method is what sets the professional gunsmith apart from the amateur gun tinkerer. Almost anybody can take some sandpaper and some oil finish and refinish a worn gun stock. It takes a dedicated, trained professional to equip and operate a shop capable of professionally refinishing gun steel. Not all gunsmiths choose to do their own blueing. To many gunsmiths, however, the most rewarding aspect of gun work is making the worn, faded, or even rusted finish on a firearm look as good as, or maybe even better than, new. Blueing or reblueing firearms can also be a very profitable aspect of gunsmithing. Once you obtain your basic disassembly hand tools, polishing equipment, and blueing tank, the actual cost of material for blueing is minimal. With the black oxide process, the chemicals are reusable. Activity 2: Buy an Inexpensive Military Surplus Rifle to Sporterize Gunsmithing is a skill, and like any skill, the more you practice, the better you ll get at it. A great way to get this practice is to sporterize a military surplus rifle. Sporterizing a military rifle usually encompasses most of the general and specialty skills that gunsmiths use today. You may use some or all of the following skills when sporterizing a military surplus rifle. Disassembly/assembly Cleaning Tuning the action Adding and fitting improved parts Drilling and tapping Scope or sporting sight installation Bolt alteration Trigger/safety work

While some of them have collector interest and should be left in original condition, you can make most of them into acceptable, if not elegant, sporters. Mausers are indisputably the king of military bolt actions. Professionals consider the large-ring, German-made Mausers the best of the these. However, there are many other rifles that you can transform into suitable venison getters. Some prized rifles to sporterize are Large-ring, German-made Mausers U.S. M1917 Enfields U.S. M1903 & M1903A3 Springfields Also acceptable are Small-ring, Swedish Mausers British Enfields Japanese Arisaka Italian Carcano Finnish or Russian Moisin Nagant Of course, you should do some research before you decide which rifle to choose. Availability. What guns are currently available on the market? Price. How much are you willing to spend for the gun and the accessories? How much of the work can you do yourself? How much will you have to pay someone else to do the work you can t do? Caliber. Is ammunition available at a reasonable price? A good deal on a rifle may not be such a good deal if ammunition isn t readily available or if it s very expensive.

With the hand tools available from Brownells, you don t even need a lathe to precisely install a semifitted barrel to a Mauser action. Do you want a new barrel in a new caliber? Stocks. What stocks are available? Scopes. How difficult is it to mount a scope on this rifle? Are scope mounts available? Does the bolt have to be altered? What about safety? Iron sights. Are sporter sights available? Do you need or want iron sights? Reblueing. The finish of the metal surfaces is probably worn and needs a reblueing. Do you want high-gloss or matte blueing? Trigger. Do you want to add an adjustable trigger to your custom rifle? Gather Additional Information Contact various manufacturers and suppliers for the availability, styles, and prices of various replacement stocks. Drop-in synthetic stocks, semiinletted walnut blanks, or walnut planks are available for most, if not all, of the surplus rifles.
