1 VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7! MARCH 9, 2015 President s Message The month of March surprised us with the coldest days of the winter, but allowed many of us to work on turning new projects. March will be an exciting month for the MMWA, with the outstanding opportunity for us to see a demonstration by Nick Cook on Thursday March 12, at 6:00 PM. Nick is one of the featured demonstrators at this summer s AAW convention in Pittsburgh Pa. Thanks go out to Gary Mrozek for arranging this demonstration, and Guy Shafer for his help in setting this up. The Twin Cities Wood Turners has graciously offered a free membership in their club. This is a gesture to us, in an effort to promote a closer relationship between our two clubs. Guy Shafer will be our board s representative. Don t forget that the March meeting on the 14 th is the deadline for donations for the empty bowl project. This is one of MMWA s favorite projects. Please bring as many bowls as you can for this worthwhile charity to raise awareness of the hungry. We also have more beads for the beads of courage. These are available in the workshop. Saturday, March 14 Chapter Meeting The March 2015 meeting of the MMAW will be held at the Visual Arts Center (VAC) in the lower level of the Paramount Theatre, Downtown S. Cloud. Social time for all members and guests will start at 9:30. The regular meeting will start at 10:00. Be sure to bring your Show and Tell items! Editor s Note: In this issue besides the regular pictures and minutes, we have more Teen Night pictures and various announcements including the Nick Cook demo on Thursday. PAGE 1

2 MMAW Regular Monthly Meeting minutes from Feb 14th, 2015 John Caye started the meeting. Discussed purchasing Anchor Seal. At this time the best option is to get it at Rockler and get 10% club discount. Wood Expo is coming up in April on the 18 th. More info next month. We will be having a demo in our space at the March Art Crawl. Friday March 20 th. More info at the March club meeting. Wayne Winkelman will collect any more boxes for the Beads of Courage donation at the March meeting. Jim Brodd shared the following dates for upcoming shows and symposiums. Oregon Woodturners March 6-8 Dakota Hands-On Symposium Fargo, ND March Provo Utah Craft Supplies May AAW Pittsburgh June Rocky Mountain Symposium Sept Guy reported that we have appox. 50 bowls turned in for the Empty Bowls event. Many more are needed. If you have any bowls you can donate or have at home please bring them to the March 14 th meeting. Denny Myers talked about and encouraged members to visit the AAW offices and displays at the Landmark Center in St. Paul if you are in the area or need a day trip. Teen Night is still going well, 6 8 participants a night. Roger Swenson donated a couple boxes of wood for our use. The club is going to purchase a drill press on a floor stand to help with finishing bowls and any drilling needs we may have in the work area. (It has been purchased and used already as of the Teen Night on 2/26. Worked well. Show and Tell. Guy Schafer had some pens and also a bowl made from Tangello, the wood he donated to the wood exchange. Jerry Wervey had a nine piece sculpture made from oak scaps and aluminum tubing. Willie Allshouse had top, crochet hook and a container to hold it. Lenny Merdan had a box made from Walnut and Buckthorn, a segmented vase from buckthorn and walnut and a cover for a box he is making. Gary Mrozek had an urn with some PVC pipe/thread to close it. Bill Larson had a snack tray from butternut. Tom Lillehei had a pine bowl, red oak bowl/cup red oak lidded box he twice turned. Jim Brodd had a dogwood cup. Larry Sampson had a lidded box made from ash John Huseth had a Russian olive natural edge bowl and a buckthorn cup. Wayne Winkelman had a black walnut pen made from a tree his dad and he planted. Lenny Merdan gave his demo on Inside Out turning.. Take your 4 square pieces of wood and glue together, use brown grocery bag paper between the wood. (Lenny used 8 inch long pieces of wood.) Do not turn the round smaller than the square ends!!! Lay out your design on the round and turn it. Sand and finish the part you have turned out because you won t be able to finish it when it is re-glued for the final turning. Split the block apart with a sharp chisel, line everything up with the outside turned part inside. If it looks good glue it together. The paper sides will be facing out. Be careful to keep and glue from squeezing into the inside of the re-glued block. Put back on the lathe and turn on center to your desired final shape. Sand and finish as you like. Nice Job Lenny!!! Jim Brodd has a Jett lathe for sale. $ Denny Myers is interested in forming a group to work on design ideas. We have a new member, Marv Drevlow from Long Prairie. We did the wood exchange which raised $24.00 for the club. We will do another exchange in April or May. 50/50 drawing. Guy Schafer won $17.00, with $18.00 going to the club. Meeting adjourned. 5 Beneath the Bark Central Minnesota Wood Expo & Sale Saturday, April 18, The Central Minnesota Wood workers, Wood turners & Wood carvers are hosting the 10 th annual Central Minnesota Wood Expo on April 18, 2015 at our NEW location the Sauk Rapids Sports Complex on the Benton County Fairgrounds. This show is open to the public, well-advertised & every year has grown in attendance and exhibitor participation. In the last six months our website has generated 3, 900 unique visitors and viewing 4,300 pages per our webmaster. Last year show attendance was over 800 attendees. Goal for vendors & over 1,000 at the gate. Wayne Winkelman, one of our members, will be collecting and shipping the boxes to AZ (Wayne will pay for shipping) if he receives them in the next two months.
