know how to build almost everything. They construct houses and other buildings including the floors, walls and roofs. Carpenters look at drawings called blueprints to show them how to put buildings or furniture together. They install the doors, windows and stairs. Give them some tools and some wood, plastic or metal and watch how quickly they can build something. While many carpenters make new buildings, some repair old buildings. Some add rooms or entire floors of rooms to help make homes, schools or hospitals bigger. Others have jobs in factories where they build furniture like bookshelves, desks, tables and chairs. 1

Some carpenters work at one place all the time. Others will work on one project until it is finished then go and work on another job somewhere else. You see carpenters working inside buildings or outside a building all year round. Some carpenters work for construction companies. Others own their own businesses. Theses are some of the tools that Carpenters use. Change the letters to find the tool names. vrwecesirrd Hint: This is one word made from two words. It s a tool that you twist to push special nails into wood or metal. mesepaertua Hint: This tool is two words. You use it before you cut a piece of wood. dnawhsa Hint: This is one word made from two words. It s a tool with teeth but it doesn t bite. mahrem Hint: When you use this tool with nails, it s very noisy. rsuaqe Hint: It looks like half a box and you use it to make sure every corner is perfect. 2

install the wires that bring electricity into houses and buildings. They join wires together and connect them to light switches and wall outlets. Appliances like televisions, radios, refrigerators and toasters have cords on them that plug into these outlets. can be very dangerous. That is why electricians are trained to work very carefully with electricity. They read drawings called blueprints that show them where wires in a building must go and how these wires are connected. When you push a button on a computer or flick a switch on a hair dryer, you let electricity travel on the wires. Then your computer and hair dryer will work. Electricians give us power to have light in our houses at night, power to cook our food and power to keep our houses warm in the winter. know how to install fire alarms, furnaces and air conditioners. They can also replace old wiring and can add more wire so your house can have more electricity. 3

Some electricians own their own businesses or they might work for large companies. Some go from job to job and install wiring, electrical outlets and light switches in new houses and large buildings. Other electricians always work in the same building, apartment block or shopping centre. In big buildings, there are always lots of electrical outlets and wires to fix and there are always lots of burned out light bulbs to change. 4

work with metal. They can bend it, make it straight, make holes in it or join pieces of metal together. Some welders join big steel beams together that form the walls and floors of new buildings. Some fix cars and big trucks that have been in accidents. Welders do this with torches. Hot gas shoots out of the end of these tools. The heat from the gas is so hot it will soften or make holes in the metal. When the hot gas touches a metal object, bright hot sparks of metal fly everywhere. must wear special clothing, shoes, gloves and masks so the sparks will not burn them. cut pipe for plumbing or weld big pipes together. These pipe pieces must fit together perfectly because many of them are used to carry water or gas. Water and gas pipelines are buried under the ground. 5

Some welders work in a shop all the time where they fix things or make steel and metal products. Other welders might work outdoors at a job site. People who are plumbers, pipefitters, mechanics and machinists also need to know how to weld. Welders are like dentists. Find what they do to metal. A B C D E G H I L M N O P R S T U Y What is your answer? 6

can make water move in every direction - up, down and sideways. They connect the pipes that bring water to, and take it away from bathtubs, showers, water fountains, sinks, dishwashers and toilets. We cannot see these pipes because they are installed in our houses and buildings before carpenters add the floors, walls and ceilings. When water won't go down a drain, you call a plumber to find out what is plugging the pipe. Sometimes plumbers pull strange things like toys or socks out of a toilet or bathtub drain. 7 When a water pipe breaks, you need a plumber to fix it - fast! Plumbers have to find the place where the water is leaking out of the pipe. This is hard to do because the pipe is hidden behind the wall or under the floor. Then they fix the pipe with special glue or clamps. They might have to add a new section of pipe by welding it to the old pipes that are still in good condition. In the winter, if you do not have heat in your house and if there is water in the pipes, the water could freeze and the pipes could break. Then you have to call a plumber to come and carefully warm the pipes to melt the ice.

Plumbers work wherever pipes have to be connected or fixed - in old and new homes or in buildings like hospitals and restaurants. Some plumbers own their own companies. Other plumbers work with pipefitters who build and fix piping systems that carry water and fuel for heating and cooling. In a house, a toilet, sink and bathtub all have their own pipes for water. In this maze, find the right pipes that connect to the bathroom. 8

make sure that machinery, vehicles and equipment work properly. Some mechanics fix cars, vans, motorcycles, snowmobiles or trucks. Other mechanics work on bigger machines like airplanes, farm tractors, snowplows or equipment in factories. Many machines and vehicles have hundreds of parts. Mechanics must know what each part does and what to do when something smells different, sounds different or does not work right. Because many machines and new cars and trucks have computers in them and a lot of electronic parts, mechanics must know how to use computers to find computer problems. 9

Most mechanics work in repair shops or in service stations in every city and town in Manitoba. Mechanics who fix airplanes and big equipment like cranes sometimes work outside because these machines will not fit into a repair building. Mechanics who repair machinery in companies like a furniture factory, dairy or paper plant work indoors. They are always checking to make sure the equipment works properly. They don't wait until a machine is broken to fix it. This is what a car repair shop looks like. These two pictures are almost the same. Picture #2 has some changes. Circle 10 things that are different in Picture #2. 10

can take a block of hard metal and make it into any shape. They might make metal into a part for an airplane engine or for a special tool that a Doctor might need to perform an operation. Machinists look at blueprints that show drawings of what they need to make. Then they use special machines to do the work. They have to cut, shape and measure the metal very carefully to make sure that what they make is exactly what is needed. If a machine is broken, a machinist might have to take it apart, find the broken part, make a new part, and then put everything back together again. 11

Some machinists work in large factories. They make parts for machines that are used to manufacture items like cars, toys, dishes and furniture. Other machinists might work for a company that supplies a lot of special parts to other businesses. These machinists might make special pieces for a space satellite. Then they might design a part that is used to produce the outside case of a CD player. Here are five tools that a machinist uses to make parts for machines and equipment. So equipment works properly, parts must fit together perfectly like pieces in a puzzle. See if you can find the shapes of these machining tools in the puzzle. 12

are trained to cut and style hair for adults and children. They can make hair curly or straight and even change the colour. They can tell you what haircut and style looks best around the shape of your face and how to make your hair look thicker or thinner. At some hair salons you can have your fingernails and toenails cut and painted with nail polish. You can even have pretty pictures and designs painted on your nails. Some hairstylists also trim and shape men's beards and moustaches. In some salons there are stylists who have taken special courses and know how to apply makeup so people look their best for weddings or for family pictures. They can also tell you how to care for your skin. 13

Some hairstylists own their own businesses. Their salons might be in shopping centres or in their own homes. They might work for other stylists. Many hairstylists work every day of the week. Some may decide to work only in the evenings after supper or on weekends. Hairstylists know what kind of haircut looks best on a certain face shape. Here are some men's and ladies' faces. Draw a hairstyle around each face shape and see which one looks best. 14

15 can make every kind of food. They could make you something new and different to eat everyday. Cooks read recipes that tell them how to make soups and salads, how to cook meat and vegetables and how to bake cakes and desserts. Some cooks invent their own recipes. Everyday cooks in a restaurant might make five or six different meals and desserts. Then they write the names of the food on a piece of paper called a menu. When you go to a restaurant for dinner, you would choose one of these meals listed on the menu. Cooks who work in hotels and banquet rooms may plan only one meal but it could be for 400 people all eating at the same time. know how to carve animals or birds from big blocks of ice. They might do this for weddings and for special events. They might also design flower arrangements made from vegetables and fruit. If you would like a birthday cake made that looks like you, a cook knows how to do it. They can make desserts that look like toys or anything you can imagine.

Cooks work wherever there are hungry people. You will always find cooks in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, or in big schools with cafeterias. Other cooks work for food companies and invent new recipes. Some cooks even work on trains or ships. Some work in trailers so they can feed people who work outdoors at building sites. These two lists are names of foods that go together. Draw a line between the two foods that match. Here s a food riddle. What vegetable is this? You throw out my outer. You keep my inner. You eat my inner. Then you throw out my inner. 18 Find and circle the names of jobs and the things some people do in their work. 17 A CABINETMAKER makes wood cabinets for your kitchen. An AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE mechanic makes sure a plane can fly. An AIR CONDITIONING mechanic makes your house cool on a hot day. Call a PLUMBER to stop water dripping in your shower. A Pork Production Technician takes care of PIGS. A CARPENTER builds schools and houses. A MECHANIC can fix a TRUCK and CARS. ELECTRICIANS install wire to bring power to your house. A HAIRSTYLIST makes you look good. A WELDER uses a torch to melt then join pieces of metal. A LANDSCAPE technician plants trees and flowers to make yards look nice. In tall buildings, IRONWORKERS join the steel frames that hold all the walls, floors and ceilings. A CRANE OPERATOR sits in a machine with a long arm that lifts heavy building materials. A PAINTER adds colour to the inside and outside of buildings. A BRICKLAYER builds walls and fireplaces from stones, rocks and bricks. An ESTHETICIAN makes your skin and NAILS look nice. A MACHINIST uses special equipment to makes tools and parts. A TOOL AND DIE Maker designs metal patterns or shapes so lots of copies can be made. A STEAMFITTER joins and fixes pipes that carry water, steam or fuel. A SHEET METAL Worker makes and builds metal or plastic roofs and walls. A COOK makes all the meals and desserts at a restaurant. When you start working in these jobs you are called an APPRENTICE. Many of these jobs use COMPUTERS. These jobs are called TRADES.
