3 INTRODUCTION This is a guide for teachers so that you can see how we would mark work, Cambridge Nationals are designed to give the learners the project and let them create the work. The guide contains sample learner work for Unit R083 Learning Outcome 4 (Be able to review 2D and 3D digital characters), graded at Marking Band 1 (MB1) and Marking Band 3 (MB3). The accompanying commentary explains why each piece of work was awarded its grade. For MB1 graded work, additional guidance has been added to suggest improvements that could be made to make it an MB2 graded piece of work. For MB3 graded work, additional guidance has been added to explain why it was awarded that grade and not the lower grade of MB2. You MUST NOT allow your learners to copy the samples contained in this guide. OCR moderators have been advised to report any copying, in whole or in part. Misuse of these samples will lead to a malpractice investigation being conducted and would put all submitted learner work at risk of investigation. 5 Marking commentary on MB1 sample learner work The review is very simplistic and offers little in the way of explanations as to why the various elements are positive or negative features. There is only a passing reference back to the brief. Some of the improvements and developments are appropriate but not explained. Suggested improvements to progress sample learner work to MB2 It is the lack of explanation or reasoning behind the critical remarks which prevent this work moving into MB2. If all the good and bad things had a limited argument outlining why they were judged good or bad that would be a good start, as would a similar approach to the improvements and developments. 5 Copyright OCR 2016

6 Learning Objective 4 Be able to review 2D and 3D digital characters MB3 Checking and reviewing the digital character SAMPLE LEARNER WORK Review the digital character against the client brief This is my interpretation of the client brief from Task 2. The client is a fashion label that makes affordable casual clothing for years old. o The character is wearing casual clothing; he is not wearing a suit or a shirt and tie. They are launching a new line of clothes and want a character created to use in a marketing campaign. o The character would be good for a marketing campaign because he is wearing the company logo. It can be either male or female but has to display their clothing, so I don t suppose it can be a cute koala bear or car. o I have chosen to make the customer male and a human so it can show off the clothes without looking silly. Young people like to be trendy and buy the latest fashions so the character has to be trendy as well. o I used references of fashionable clothes to put on my character so he is up to date. The client doesn t say about gender or race so I could make a black character or a white one. o I chose to make my character white but I have other versions of him where he is black or Asian. If I was going to buy clothes from this shop I would like the character to be cool. Not talking down to me or trying to be my best mate. It would have to be someone I d like to be or have as a friend. o I think the character is cool he is not desperately trying to be trendy. Teenagers dress like the music they like so you get Goths and Emos and things like that. The fashion label will want to sell clothes to as many different people as possible so the character can t be too strongly like a particular group. o The character is pretty ordinary looking and does not look like he belongs to one group or another. Check that the digital character meets the client s requirements It is going to be displayed in shop windows so it will need to be a high resolution image or vectors as it s going to be printed pretty big. o The character is made in vector software and saved as an EPS which can be used at any size so it will go in the window or magazines or even on the side of the shop. It might get used in other advertising formats such as magazines and TV but the shop images should be big enough to print at high resolution or reduce down for TV or internet use. o I have exported the character as a jpeg at two different resolutions one for TV and one for the internet. The vector file can be used to make jpegs of any size or resolution that the customer wants. 6 Copyright OCR 2016

I could have added shadows and highlights to the character to make it seem more three dimensional. He is not supposed to be proper 3D but a bit of shading might help a bit. The characters face is not very emotional he doesn t look very interested or happy, but that makes him seem a bit cooler maybe. He could be smiling or have bigger eyes, but I didn t want him to look cute like a puppy. His shoes are not very well drawn and should have more detail like laces. Describe areas for further development, giving reasons for my choices I think it would be good to have a range of different poses, like sitting down or playing a sport etc. He could have friends as well. It would be good if he had a range of different clothes to wear which would make it more interesting for people wanting to buy clothes more than once. Marking commentary on MB3 sample learner work A comparative approach with the original brief is used to good effect to highlight the aspects of the brief the learner considers to have been met. The relative success of this is also well defined and thorough. The completed test plan is also shown to evidence the efficacy of the technical aspects of the final artwork. There is a clear distinction made between improvements and further developments. The former addresses the shortcomings of the existing digital character and the latter outlines additional features that could be added in the future. Why it was awarded MB3 not MB2 All aspects of the brief and the candidate s interpretation of it have been addressed in the review. The comments are valid and well explained. The section on further developments again shows a thoughtful and considered approach to the further use of the digital character. 7 Copyright OCR 2016
