Alexandria Coin Club The Alexandria Coin Club meets on the 3rd Wednesday each month, at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St. in Alexandria, VA. It s just off US 1 inside the Beltway; there s plenty of free parking. Meetings are held in the Gold Room. Check the lobby bulletin board just to be sure! The bourse opens at 7:00 pm and members may display, trade, and sell coins during this time. Our auction starts about 8:10 pm. Members and visitors can bid during the bourse and auction. 2 Coin Show Chairman, Boots Barnes, is asking for your help with the Annual Coin Show. The ACC Coin Show is presently scheduled for 7 Feb The more volunteers, the easier the task. Many positions have already been filled. Check out the new website for the at Boy Scouts Need Coin Magazines Community Outreach Opportunity A member of the club has been approached by a Boy Scout leader who will be teaching a class on coin collecting. He is a collector himself and has asked if we could provide him with some coin magazines to give to the scouts taking his class. So, if you have any old or under used copies of Coin World, Coins, The Numismatist, Numismatic News, etc., please bring them to the next meeting. Thank you. Some Mint Sets are of particular note to collectors since they contain coins not issued for circulation. This includes: 1970 Mint Set, which includes the 1970-D Kennedy Half and 1981 Mint Sets that include dollar coins not issued for circulation Mint Set included the 1996-W Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint and issued only in the sets for the 50th anniversary of the coin series. Silver Totals less in Minor Coins than the Dollar The Coinage Act of 1853 reduced the silver content of the minor coins (halves, quarters, and dimes) by 6.91 percent but did not change the dollar s weight. Ever since then silver minor coins have lower total bullion content than the amount in the silver dollar. June 2

4 Col. Steven Ellsworth will be teaching "Think Like A Thief: Security for Dealers and Collectors" at Summer Seminar. The class will be offered during Session1: June at Colorado College, Colorado Springs, CO. Students will learn how to protect their collection at home, while traveling and at coin shows. Ellsworth is a full-time coin dealer at Butternut Coins. He is an expert at coin security and will instruct his students on how to minimize the risks involved with owning a valuable collection. He has been in the business for many years and is one of the best coin security experts in the country. This class is sure to provide students with a wealth of knowledge and personal experience in the subject. In this class, students will participate in role-playing exercises that explain how to defend themselves in case of an attack. To accompany these demonstrations, Ellsworth will discuss personal protection and improvised weapons. A burglary is the worst-case scenario for many collectors, but it is smart to be prepared for any situation. If you frequently travel with your collection, this course will be especially valuable. Whether you travel by car, plane, bus or taxi, it is important to know how to protect yourself from theft. Due to the content of this course, students must be 21 years or older to enroll. There is an additional $100 fee for this class because you will not only discuss real world examples but you will also come up with a security plan, complete NRA 1st Steps and Personal Protection in the Home and learn basic firearm safety. Whether you keep your collection at a store, an office, or at home, it is important to know how to protect yourself and those around you in case of a robbery. When submitting coins for the monthly auction always try to use the printed club submission form. The club form lists the current submission rules. To conserve printing costs, take one or two blank forms and make addition copies as needed. Submit individual coins in a flip or 2x2 holder. Flatten the staples of a 2x2 holder with pliers. This will protect your coins as well as the submissions of others from damage caused by the raised staples when coins are stacked for transporting. When completing the submission form always verify the date and mint mark on your coin. Coins submitted without a reserve minimum tend to sell for higher prices than submissions with a reserve that's close to the actual value. Help support the club s Refreshment Fund, buy a raffle ticket and win a valuable coin. The proceeds from the raffle ticket sales help purchase the free coffee and donuts for each meeting. June 4
