2 Describer s notes Auction 5 It has been interesting putting this sale together. 25 vendors have contributed and our thanks are due to all of them. A couple of months ago just about all we had for this sale was the amazing Leeward Islands low values collection, one of the more complex collections to lot which we have encountered and a privilege to handle. Since then, material has come in from all directions! As noted, we guarantee all the Specimen lots in this sale to be genuine (as we guarantee Specimens in our retail stock). As far as we are aware, no auction house has ever been able to do this before. Most people know that there is a huge problem with faked Specimens, but the cost of expertisation can be prohibitive, and even exceed the cost of the stamps! All in this sale are pre-expertised. However, if you want the comfort of a certificate, we can issue a King George VI Expertising Certificate for you at a special reduced rate on lots from this sale; 15 for Coronation and Victory sets, or 35 for a definitive set (plus VAT and postage). The Japanese Occupation material from Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak has been vetted by a noted expert and is similarly guaranteed. The Malaya Japanese Occupation material has been checked in-house; only items which inspire full confidence have been included. There are many outstanding items in the sale. We had read of the Waterlow colour trials in Geosix many years ago; reading about them was one thing, but the impact of their authenticity in the flesh was another thing altogether. What seemed speculation was suddenly reality. Odd singles have turned up in the past, but the complete pages have suddenly become a must for the serious exhibitor of any of the issues involved. Viewing will be available at Stampex (Stand 91). As always, if you have any queries, or would like to view postally or in our offices, just call or us. Scans of collection or other lots not illustrated are available and may be charged for if so, we will agree the charges with you. Enjoy the Catalogue. No Buyers Premium! To place a bid please send us the bid sheet provided with this catalogue or alternatively you can info@murraypayne.com Fax: + (0) Call: + (0)

3 The following 83 lots are from a single collection of Specimens. Like the other Specimen sets in this sale, these have been thoroughly checked and authenticated. We unequivocally guarantee them to be genuine. The Coronation and Victory Specimens are offered first as individual sets, and then each as a unit; if a bid for them as a unit exceeds the aggregate of the winning bids for the individual sets, they will be sold as a unit, otherwise as individual sets.remember that Specimen sets will usually be hinged, and that there are often a few short (or long) perforations on Specimen stamps. We mention such occurrences only when we perceive them to be a defect. Scans of any lots are available on request a charge to cover our costs may be made at our discretion.our estimates reflect the value of the stamps as Specimens, and take little account of the value of the expertisation that has already taken place. Remember that usually any expertisation will cost you a minimum of 25 plus VAT, much more for a definitive set. (Please refer to the introduction for our special offer of formal certification of any specimen sets in this sale) Coronation Specimens 1. Aden Type D20, fine hinged mint, 3½a nibbled perfs at right. Each has a prominent watermark Waterlow & Sons Limited and the trials are stuck below this watermark. Each sheet is stuck to a black album page. The vendor purchased these in 1991 and subsequently wrote to the late Marcus Faux, the former Chief Inspector for the Crown Agents, enquiring as to whether these were an elaborate hoax. Mr Faux replied that they were a serious experiment designed to increase the attractiveness, and thus the competitiveness, of Waterlow s designs and that they would have been used by the firm s overseas sales unit. He believed that on the winding-up of Waterlow s stamp-printing business (in 1960) these trials would have passed to De La Rue. On the dispersal of the DLR archive their significance was evidently not recognised and indeed, at the time of their sale in 1991, they were deemed to be unofficial. Each sheet is offered with a copy of Mr Faux s letter (Barbuda) d yellow on pale yellow paper. Hinged marginal pair, R3/2 RP damaged d. 13 The June 1949 consignment consisted of 1660 sheets and the February 1953 consignment of 110 sheets. It seems more sheets were numbered for the first despatch than were actually required. The following two lots are examples of the evidence for this; the selvedge above R1/6 having been removed and a new number applied over R1/5. Richard Baker comments; interesting because it has the marginal cross and arrow which one associates with the dull carmine shade. BUT the plate mark beside R6/1 is black (characteristic of the brighter shade) neither fish nor fowl, but an intermediate stage which according to Bernard Hughes, is scarcer than the dull shade! a similar sheet, selvedge above R1/6 removed and re-numbered O82 above R1/5, few pencil notes on selvedge a similar sheet but numbered O ½d perf 13.
