1 CLARK & co~ This New York local post, operated by C. C. Clark, ran.for only two months in. the winter of Clark & Co. issued one stamp design - a simple letterbox in. red on. yellow paper. Genuine examples of this 1 stamp are scarce. 48Ll GENUINE ONYELLOW The short-lived post was not very successfal. Clark sold the business to Ahn.er S. 2 CLARK & COO ]. W. Scott made two different forgeries of the "Clark & Co." stamp. The first one is based on one of the illustrations published in his catalogues. This forgery completely lacks the letters "NP" in the box's shading lines, and is also missing the comma after "Cl.ARK". The other design. is closer to the genuine stamp, but the "NP" in the shading lines has been replaced with a symbol that looks like a "greater-than" sign. (>)with a dot inside it and a dot to the right of it. There's also a constant break in the circular line above the "A" of"clark". This second forgery had at least two different printings. One printing is on a white paper, and is known in a horizontal strip which have two other forgeries made by Scott. These forgeries are one of his "Barr's Penny Dispatch" designs and his "A. M. 4 CLARK & COO S. Allan Taylor's forgery comes in a wide variety of colors. Most likely he based his design. on the illustration inj.-b. Moens' 1864 catalogue, as it is very similar to it and even has the extra border. 8 CLARK & COO Of the next three designs, the first one has an apostrophe after "ClARK" in stead of a comma, while the second one is missing the period after "CENT'. Both designs were made by unknown forgers. The last of these three designs was lithographed by Pierre Schmitz for J.-B. Moens' 1864 catalogue. The "NP" has been replaced by a dear area with two small vertical lines to the left, a " v " at the top, and two small diagonal lines and a" > " to the bottom-left. ONECEHr.
