1 CTPR 480 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES SPRING 2018/ For Fall 2018 If you have any questions please contact both: Brenda Goodman: 480 Coordinating Professor Cydney Fisher: 480 Lead SA Overview This class is a production experience for advanced undergraduates who have satisfied the prerequisites listed below, and whose projects have been selected by faculty with input from student representatives. Students majoring in any SCA undergraduate division or enrolled in a SCA undergraduate course may submit scripts. In the event that the script is chosen for production, the writer must collaborate with the director and producer on at least TWO ADDITIONAL DRAFTS and a SET OF REVISIONS (if deemed necessary). The writer must be available to meet with the producing and directing instructor and revisions must be completed before the end of this spring semester. A writer may submit a maximum of two scripts, but if both scripts are short listed only one can be pitched. A committee composed of members of the faculty and selected students will evaluate the scripts. Scripts will be judged anonymously. Registration for CTPR 480 is not required for the project writers Completion of CTPR 450 IS required for directors and producers. Producers who have met the requirements can attach themselves to material. Writers and producers will need to complete the development collaboration form detailing any relationships regarding the submitted materials. NOTE : All submission scripts must be titled and dated, but must NOT include the name of the writer on the script. Writer s name and any other attachments (particularly developing producers) and all contact information must be clearly stated in the body of the submission . Script submissions, Producer applications, and Director applications are due by 11:59PM on Sunday March 18, Please 480submissions@gmail.com or cydneyfi@usc.edu if you have any questions.

2 The faculty and student representatives will select projects based on a review of script, story, and project outline. Students seeking directing and producing roles will be selected based on the quality of their prior work and their project presentation. Types of Projects Projects will be an array of dialogue narrative film, dialogue short form, web or TV episodic, documentary, and alternative non dialogue-based cinema. Each cinematic form of projects will follow different time restrictions: Episodic projects may create a single pilot or up to 3 episodes, totaling not more than 12 minutes in length. Dialogue narrative projects (either a short film or episodic pilots for web/tv) may be no longer than 12 minutes. Alternative non dialogue-based cinema projects may be no longer than 12 minutes. All short scripted films will be no longer than 12 minutes, no longer than 12 pages. Documentary projects will be no longer than 15 minutes. Narrative Dialogue Projects (Short Films and Web/TV Episodic) A student may both write a project and separately submit to produce or direct a different project. Students will not be permitted to direct a script they ve written. A producer may conceive an idea for a project, collaborate with a writer to develop a script, and remain eligible to produce that project. Documentary and Alternative Non Dialogue-Based Projects Directors and producers seeking to create a documentary or alternative non dialogue-based project may conceive the project, write a pitch presentation, and submit it for consideration alongside examples of their prior work. The project and the position of producer and director will be considered as a package. When submitting a documentary or alternative non dialogue-based project, submitters must also include both a 480 Directing and a Producing Application as part of the submission package Each student will write a 3-5 page treatment for a minute documentary or alternative non dialogue-based film. If chosen to pitch, the student will produce either a short video (up to 4 minutes) or have some visual presentation to show the panel. The pitch must make clear what the film is

3 about, who the main subject(s) are, and demonstrate the visual style you hope to achieve. If there are main characters or a primary location/setting vital to the success of the film, then a signed release will be required at the pitch stage. Submissions for documentaries and alternative non-dialogue projects must be accompanied by a 480 Producing AND Directing Application Students submitting a documentary or alternative non dialogue-based project for consideration will submit treatments to 480submissions@gmail.com a nd a 480 Producing and Directing Application via Google Form by the final script submission deadline, 11:59PM on Sunday March 18, Further Information Films will be pre-produced, produced, edited, sound designed, mixed, digitally finished and delivered in the fifteen-week semester. This year, the budget of projects will be determined based off of how many final scripts are selected. The minimum amount given by the school for each project will be at least $5,055, however this amount might increase based off the number of selected projects. It is anticipated that all members of the 480 class will also contribute an additional $300 slush fund toward the budget of their projects. Timeline Producer, Director, and Script Submission Deadline: 11:59PM on Sunday March 18, Note: you may submit a directing application and a producing application Announcements By Friday, March 29th, the selection committee, will select projects and a pool of directors and producers (who will align with selected projects to pitch) to present pitches on Friday, April 13th.

4 Meet and Greet Will held on March 31st, TBA. This will be a chance for you meet with the the selected writers, producers, and the directors. Pitches On Friday, April 13th the selection committee will have a pitch presentation of selected projects. The pitching teams will consist of a writer, director, and producer. Final Selection On Friday, April 13th a final selection projects will be announced as approved projects. In order to move forward the approved projects will need to be fully crewed by Friday, April 27th. DIRECTOR SUBMISSIONS Eligibility As a potential director you need to have completed, or be currently enrolled in CTPR 480 or 450 and have completed or be currently enrolled in CTPR 470, 474, 476, or 478. Applicants must submit a reel and resume. 480 directors may not direct a script they have written. This does not preclude a director candidate from submitting a script. If both director and script are accepted, another Director can pitch the script. Director s Reel Potential directors must upload their reel to Vimeo.com with a secure password. The Vimeo info section should have the following information: your name, phone number, address and contents of the reel. The reel must include your completed CPTR 310 project in its entirety. You may submit only TWO projects on your reel. One of them must be the CTPR 310 project; and the other project may be any other USC class project. Both projects together must not exceed the 10- -minute time limit. DO NOT PUT MONTAGES OF ANY TYPE ON YOUR REEL. The link to your video, along with the password must be typed ON YOUR DIRECTOR S RESUME (see below). Example: (password: jsmith2016)

5 Director s Resume Potential directors need to submit directing resumes as PDFs. Clearly state your name, phone number and address. Have a photo of yourself on the resume. Describe your 310 and each project on your sample reel. List the title of the material and the name of the writer for each.list all the names of your 290, 310, and 475/476/478 professors. Your resume should detail work or student experiences that relate to you as a director. Your resume should also have the link to your reel on vimeo.com (see above) Director Submitting Process ---- SUBMITTING ONLINE Directing candidates must submit electronically via Google Form no later than 11:59PM on Sunday March 18, The must contain the following information: Your name, phone number, address, and past 480/450 crew position. Your should also have a link to your Vimeo link with a password (SEE FORMAT ABOVE) LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED PRODUCER SUBMISSIONS Eligibility As a potential producer you need to have completed or be currently enrolled in CTPR 450/480 and have completed or be currently enrolled in CTPR 438. Students may petition on their application to take 438 and 480 simultaneously. Producers of 480 Production Courses may not produce a script they have written.
