2 Step 1 Mark out the size for the base (2b) and the lid (2a) on the plywood sheet (2) 5 x 100 x 200 mm. Drill 1 mm dia in the lid and then saw in half. sand to finish Note: To mark the middle of the base (2b) draw 2 diagonal lines! 3,0 200,0 2a Ø 1,0 Lid 2a Base 2b 2b Step 2 Mark out the size for the middle parts on the plywood sheet (1) 10 x 100 x 200. Drill partl (1a) 1 mm dia and cut the plywood sheet in half Sand to finish. Saw out the large circle. Tip: Place (1a/1b) directly over each other and join together with tape-saw them out together in one go ø 80 mm Note: To find the middle points draw two diagonals! 200,0 1a 3,0 Ø 1,0 1b 1a 1b Step 3 Sand all parts to finish 2

3 Step 4 Cut the vacuum plastic foil (3) 0,5 x 120 x 120 mm to the size of 0,5 x 100 x 100 mm using scissors ,9 81,6 100 Step 5 Insert a 15mm nail ( 6) through the middle point of the base te (2a) Note: The head of the nail should be punched under the surface of the plywood, so that it does not scratch any polished surface! Place the magnetic needle (5) on the top of the nail. The distance bewteen the base and the top of the needle should not be more than 9,5mm. Should it be more the nail must be shortened with end cutters. Note: The magnetic needle must move freely without any resistance on the point of the nail ( File the nail point if necessary!) 6 5 6,8 9,5 Step 6 Cut out the compass rose ( Page 7) along the broken line. Glue the back and place it on the nail and glue it to the base. Replace the manetic needle on the nail. Note: The magnetic needle must point in the direction NORTH ( darker needle tip ) adjust rose if necessary. 3

Step 7 Glue the middle part (1b) on one side and place it directly over the base ( compasss rose.

Note It is important to check that the magnetic needle can turn freely befoe gluing the cover down 3 1b Step 8 Now apply glue the the undersidee of the middle piece

4 Step 7 Glue the middle part (1b) on one side and place it directly over the base ( compasss rose.) Apply an all purpose glue to the top surface of the middle piece (1b)and then place the vacuum forming plastic (3) on the top again to finish. Note It is important to check that the magnetic needle can turn freely befoe gluing the cover down 3 1b Step 8 Now apply glue the the undersidee of the middle piece (1a) and then place this on top of the foil sheet. Important:<cs:Normal> The 1mm-hole on the middle piece (1a) must be glued on the south side of the compass rose!cs:normal> 1a Step 9 Cut 100mm from the cotton strip (7) Place all the parts including lid together making sure that the 1mm holes are on the same side Apply glue to the cotton leaving it to soak in for a while, then place it as a binding to hold all the parts of the compass together ( Apply the binding to the edge opposite where the 1mm holes are drilled) Make sure that the binding folds over ca 15mm on the top 15 4

Step 10 Cut a piece 250mm long (4) from the nylon thread and tie a knot in the end. Sink the knotted end in the 1mm hole in the middle piece and glue it in place.

Guide the free end through the 1mm hole in the lid. Open the lid to 90 degrees and tie the thread so that it stays open in this place 4 General: From everywhere on the earth the sun wanders from East to West This is why it reaches the midday point in a easterly laying point as in a west laying point. This difference is 4 minutes per line of longtitude The local time is read from the sun so that 12 oclock is when the Sun is in the South. Our simple compass must be registerd with a watch because its not possible with longtitude and latitude. Use the paper cut out on page 7 and glue it on the inside of the lid and arrange the compass needle so the it points to the North Every half an hour ( eventually every 15 min ) you can mark where the shadow on the paper falls and note the time When marking the compass you have to note Whether its Summer time or Winter time as the clocks change according the season! 5
