Bartow, penman and teacher of penmanship in the Albany BusinessCollege,Albany,N.Y.,isanotherproductoftheOhiosoil,which hasnurturedsomanyofourpenmen.hewasbornin1868onafarmin Harrison County, Ohio, and received his early education in the public schools. He attended school, worked on a farm and in a country store andpostoffice,untiltheageofsixteen,whenhewentwestandspent sixmonthsandallofhishardearnedmoneyinkansasandminnesota. Mr. Bartow does not remember when lie became interested in penmanship,butitwasthroughtheinspirationreceivedfromgaskell's Compendium. At the age of eighteen, he attended the Oberlin, Ohio, Business College, and attributes his skill and success largely to the teachingandinfluenceofthelateuriahmckeeandj.t.henderson. HeseemstohaveafondnessforPearlStreetasaplaceofbusiness,for in twenty years, he has been employed in three large cities, Cleveland, Buffalo and Albany, and his business in each city was on Pearl Street. Forthepasteighteenyears,hehasheldhispresentposition,andinthat time a small army of young men and women have passed under his guidance. He divides his time between teaching and office work, and is equally adept in any line of pen work. He was awarded a silver medal by the LouisianaPurchaseExposition.Oneofhispendrawings'exhibitedthere is probably one of the largest and most elaborate of its kind in the country.

4 The$following$obituary$was$taken$from$The$Educator,$June$1941$edition.$ S.E.Bartow Samuel Everett Bartow was a native of Cassville, Ohio. He received his traininginthepublicschoolsthereandlaterattendedtheoberlin,ohio BusinessCollege,whichisthepresentOberlinCollege.AtOberlin,Ohio, Mr. Bartow came under the instruction of Uriah McKee, a famous penman of that day. Mr. Bartow was a member of the faculty of the AlbanyBusinessCollege,Albany,N.Y.,for23years. Mr.BartowcametoNewYorkinSeptember1912tojointhefacultyof thepalmermethodschoolofpenmanship,whichwasconductedunder thejurisdictionofthea.n.palmercompany.mr.bartowcontinuedin thisworkforabout28years. Mr. Bartow was awarded a Silver Medal at the Louisiana Purchase ExpositionatSt.Louisin1904forapendrawing.Mr.Bartowwasnot only famed as an outstanding instructor of handwriting but classed as one of the best ornamental pen artists in the country. He excelled in shadedornamentalwriting,textletteringandengrossing,aswellaspen drawing. A series of original pen drawings appeared on the covers of The American Penman magazine for a period of years and attracted wideattention.apenportraitofabrahamlincoln,whichwasexecuted bymr.bartow,isofunusualquality. Mr.Bartowpassedawayathishome,216765thSt.,Brooklyn,N.Y.,after ashortillness.hewas73.intermentwasatcleveland,ohio.mr.bartow issurvivedbyadaughter,mrs.harrietwesta.
