Directions Read both texts. Then answer question Both articles focus on a quest. How is the quest similar and different in both articles? Use details from both articles to support your response. In your response be sure to explain Hercules quest and Zomo s quest explain how the quests are similar and different use details from the story to support your response
3 EXEMPLARY RESPONSE 2 pt RL.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character s thoughts, words, or actions) W.4.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Stem: What character trait most helps [character] do X? Use two details from the story to support your response. 1. What character trait most helps Hercules retrieve the apples from Atlas? Use two details from the story to support your response. The character trait that most helps Hercules retrieve the apples from Atlas is resourcefulness. Hercules was resourceful because he decided to trick Atlas into getting the golden apples instead of trying to defeat the fierce dragon guarding the garden. Hercules offers to carry Atlas load for a while so Atlas could have a break from holding up the world. In return, Atlas agrees to bring the golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides. Atlas brings back the apples and Hercules must again trick Atlas to take back the load of the world. When Hercules gives the golden apples to Eurytheus, the king describes Hercules as resourceful as well as strong. Other relevant text-based details (creative, smart, imaginative, and clever) Apply 2-point rubric
4 EXEMPLARY RESPONSE 2 pt RL.4.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text. W.4.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Stem: What is the main idea of paragraphs # to #? Use two details from the story to support your response. 2. What is the theme of the myth Hercules Quest? Use two details from the story to support your answer. One theme of the myth Hercules Quest is that determination is the key to success. Hercules has to perform multiple tasks to redeem himself after using his strength to do dangerous and dishonorable things. Hercules is determined to complete the tasks, even though they all seem impossible. For instance, Hercules does not quit even when he fails at first to kill the Nemean lion. He tries to use a club and then a spear, but neither attempt works. Remembering that he killed serpents with his bare hands, he kills the lion with his bare hands, too. Because he doesn t give up, he is successful. Other relevant text-based details Apply 2-point rubric
5 EXEMPLARY RESPONSE 4 pt RL.4.9 Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g., opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g., the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures. W.4.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Stem: Both articles focus on X. How is X similar and different in both articles? Use details from both articles to support your response. 3. Both articles focus on a quest. How is the quest similar and different in both articles? Use details from both articles to support your response. In your response be sure to explain both Hercules and Zomo s quests explain how the quests are similar and different use details from the story to support your response The main characters in Hercules Quest and Zomo s Friends set out on quests. The quests that both characters undertake have similarities and differences. One similarity is that both Hercules and Zomo set out on quests to earn back the trust and respect of loved ones. After behaving poorly, Hercules has to complete several tasks to earn back his father s trust and prove worthy of the gift of strength. Zomo, too, had made mistakes like bragging and boasting and needed to earn back the respect of his friends. Zomo enlists the advice of Sky God to find out how he can get the other animals to be his friends. In addition, both Hercules and Zomo needed to rely on their cleverness to complete the quest. Hercules convinced Atlas to fetch the golden apples. Zomo had to bring back the tale of Zebra, next, the tears of the Crocodile, and lastly to find and return the moon to the sky. However, there were also certain differences between the two tales. While both quests required cleverness, Hercules tasks also required strength. He had to complete several labors for King Eurystheus to protect Eurystheus kingdom. The characters in Zomo s tale are animals, while the characters in Hercule s tale are humans and gods. Hercules Quest and Zomo s Friends focus on the main characters using their unique abilities to overcome tasks, to recognize their mistakes and learn to use their talents for good. Other relevant text-based details Apply 4-point rubric
