He worked in and explored many different genres the novel, the short story, the essay, the fable, poetry. Marcovaldo, published in 1963, is one of his most popular and accessible books. It consists of short vignettes, snippets in the life of the main character, Marcovaldo, who often finds himself at odds with the demands of modern life. Each story usually consists of a problem, which Marcovaldo, an eternal optimist, tackles with great enthusiasm. Invariably, something goes terribly wrong. 1) In the two stories you have been assigned to read, identify the problem or conflict. What task has Marcovaldo set himself? 5 Il Mediterraneo Salvatores Human capital (Il capitale umano) Virzì My Voyage to Italy (documentary by Martin Scorsese on Italian cinema) B) and read, in Italian: Favole al Telefono, by Gianni Rodari (I will provide text, vocabulary, and notes) Tasks/questions for the film While viewing: have a notepad handy and write down at least ten Italian words you recognize from the film s dialogue as you watch, make a list of the film s major characters and note the place or places the film is set After viewing: Which film did you watch? When and where is the film set? Who is the film s main character or characters? In two or three sentences, briefly describe the film s theme Choose one aspect of the film that particularly appealed to you (for example, the story or plot, the sets, the acting, the dialogue, a particular character s development) and write a paragraph discussing it. About Gianni Rodari Gianni Rodari ( ) was an educator who started writing short stories as tools to be used in the classroom. He published his first piece in He is best known for his short fanciful tales that combine elements of the classic fable, fantasy, and magic realism, always with an undercurrent of humor. In Filobus Numero 75, he tells the story of a tram (filobus) that one day develops a will of its own and decides to veer from its normal route and take its passengers into the country for a picnic. I have prepared a vocabulary list and notes, to facilitate your reading. The story would be classified as a children s tale, but you will find the Italian challenging all the same. Two tenses are used throughout, the imperfect, which you know, and the passato remoto, which you haven t learned yet. The passato remoto, or remote past, stands in for the passato prossimo in writing. In speech, we would say Ho comprato un giocattolo, I bought a toy. In writing, instead of Ho comprato, the passato prossimo, we will see Comprai, which is the remote past. The meaning is exactly the same: I bought. While you haven t learned this tense yet, you will easily recognize many of the verbs that appear in it. Below are some examples. andò alzò guardò si mise diventarono he/she went, from andare he/she raised, from alzare he/she looked, from guardare he/she began, from mettere they became, from diventare
6 Tasks/questions for the reading Who are most of the passengers? Why are they taking the tram? How do they react when the tram veers from its normal course? Where does the tram come to a stop? What signals a change of attitude among the passengers after they have gotten off the tram, as they bide their time? Where did Dottor Giulio Bollati leave his visiting card? How much time did they end up spending in the meadow? Vocabolary and notes for Il filbous numero 75 by Gianni Rodari for Italian 3 and Italian 3 honors (p. 1) filobus tram in partenza da departing from Monte Verde Vecchio a neighborhood in Rome Piazza Fiume a square or piazza in Rome invece di scendere verso instead of going down towards prese 3rd person singular remote past of prendere, to take, head for Trastevere a neighborhood in Rome svoltò 3rd person singular remote past of svoltare, to turn Aurelia Antica a street in Rome correre to run, to race tra among, in the middle of prato meadow, field lepre (f.) hare viaggiatori passengers quasi almost impiegato worker comperare = comprare, to buy lo leggevano sulla spalla they were reading it over the shoulder vicino neighbor, person next to you voltare to turn alzò 3rd person singular remote past of alzare, to raise si mise 3rd person singular remote past of mettersi, which in the reflexive plus the infinitive means to start, to begin gridare to shout fattorino ticket vendor (buses and trams in Italy used to have both a driver/conductor autista or conducente and a person who sold tickets fattorino) tradimento treachery! proteste (shouts of) protest diventare to become

It tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan warrior who flees Troy as the city is engulfed in flames and sets off with a small band of fellow survivors to find a new home in a land called Italy. The poem was written over a span of many years, immediately after a long period of civil war in Italy and during the first decades of the new Empire, under the reign of Augustus. The events depicted in the poem are set in pre-history right after the legendary Trojan War (1100 b.c.) and purport to explain how Rome came to be founded. In this respect, it is what we would call a Foundation Myth. The Aeneid is an epic poem, which can be defined as a long, serious narrative story, in verse, usually focusing on a single hero and a single important event or series of events that are thematically related. Homer s Iliad, the oldest surviving epic in Western literature, announces its theme and protagonist (main character) in the very first line:
10 Sing to me, Muse, of the wrath of Peleus son Achilles Importantly, the first word of the poem in Greek is wrath, which tells us immediately what the story is about. Homer s Odyssey, another epic poem, likewise introduces its theme and protagonist in its first words: Tell me, Muse, of that resourceful man who was driven far. The Odyssey s first word in Greek is man, which again suggests the poem s main theme the life and wanderings of the (mortal) man Odysseus. Since Odysseus in the course of his wanderings is offered, and refuses, immortality, the choice of the word man (or mortal ) to begin the poem is significant. Virgil keeps to the tradition of announcing his theme up front: I sing of arms and of a man, who first from the shores of Troy (Arma virumque canō, Trōiae quī prīmus ab orīs ) Notice that the first words in Latin are (military) arms and man. Since the first half of the Aeneid deals primarily with Aeneas (the virum of the opening line) and his attempts to reach Italy, and the second half with the clash between the newcomers (Aeneas and his followers) and the native inhabitants of Italy, the first two words neatly suggest the contents of the entire poem. You have been assigned Book One of the Aeneid the poem consists of 12 chapters, or books. In this book, we learn of the divine plan concerning Aeneas how his arrival in Italy is fated on high, and how Aeneas fate is fiercely opposed by one of the gods, Juno, the wife of Jupiter. Aeneas greatest advocate and protector is Venus, his immortal mother, who intercedes with Jupiter on his behalf. The plan calls for Aeneas and his small fleet to arrive in Carthage, a new city founded by Dido, herself a refugee from the East. All the events in the book lead up to the fateful meeting between Dido and Aeneas, and ends with an invitation to Aeneas to tell the story of his escape from Troy and his subsequent wanderings. Books Two and Three are taken up with his account, and Book Four deals with the blossoming love story between Dido and Aeneas, the departure of the Trojans from Carthage, and Dido s anger at being abandoned. Tasks/questions Explain why Juno is so hostile to Aeneas and the Trojans. Think of an event, in the actual history of Rome, that the poet Virgil is trying to create an historical context for. Hint: Dido is the queen of Carthage, and Carthage was the capital of the Punic empire. In Book One, Jupiter (Zeus) delivers a prophecy. What does it tell us about Aeneas and the Trojans?
11 Note: You have access to a PDF of the entire Aeneid, Cranch translation. If you prefer, you can find used copies on Amazon for under $ If you choose to buy a copy of the poem, buy the Cranch or Mandlebaum translation. Hint: Dido is the queen of Carthage, and Carthage was the capital of the Phoenician, or Punic, empire. An epithet is an adjective repeatedly used of gods and epic heroes that describes some essential aspect of their character or some distinguishing physical trait. Achilles is called swift-footed, Odysseus is wily or resourceful, Minerva is gray-eyed, Zeus is cloud-gatherer, and so on. Aeneas main epithet is pius, or pious.
