3 History of Neuroinformatics in China Initiation of Neuroinformatics in China The first Conference on Neuroinformatics was held in 2000 in Haikou, China. Neuroinformatics is considered as a frontier and multi-disciplinary science To construct the data bank system of neuroscience was proposed. Many Chinese scientists requested the Chinese Government to financially support neuroinformatics The National Neuroinformatics Working Group (NNWG) The 168th Xiangshan Science Conference, entitled Human Brain Project and Neuroinformatics was held in In September, 2001 in Beijing Dr Stephen H. Koslow, the director of Office on Neuroinformatics Coordinator, NIMH, USA, introduced the Human Brain Project and discuss how to conduct neuroinformatics research in China with the officers of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China As a result, the National Neuroinformatics Working Group (NNWG) was formed

4 Chinese representatives attended OECD-GSF-NI- WG meeting Authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Prof Xiaowei Tang, Prof Lin Yin and Prof Yiyuan Tang represented China, as an observing country, attended the meeting of OECD- Global Science Forum - Neuroinformatics Working Group (OECD-GSF-NI-WG) in China started neuroscientific data sharing officially

5 Progress of Neuroinformatics in China Support from Chinese Government The 2002 Report on Neuroinformatics from the Global Science Forum Neuroinformatics Working Group of OECD (OECD-GSF-NI-WG) was submitted to the ministers attending the meeting Ministers expressed their appreciation for the work of OECD-GSF-NI-WG In April 2004, the OECD-GSF meeting on Neuroinformatics in Paris The Ministry of Science and Technology of China representing Chinese Government joined the OECD

7 Promotion on Neuroinformatics Research The Chinese Neuroinformatics Working Group has done effort on neuroinformatics database and internet based collaboration environment as a part of scientific data-sharing, particular the data-sharing in biomedicine. In October, 2005, the 266th Xiangshan Science Conference, entitled Neuroinformatics and Scientific Data Sharing was held in Beijing. The national strategy of the development of neuroinformatics in China was discussed. A special session of the 20th International CODATA Conference entitled Brain Bank was organized. The work of Neuroinformatics Work Group of China were reported.

8 Meanwhile, China is doing effort on promoting research on neuroinformatics. In order to enhance the communication in neuroinformatics, the China-Japan- Korea Joint Workshop on Neurobiology and Neuroinformatics is regularly organized. The 4th China-Korea-Japan Joint Workshops on Neurobiology and Neurinformatics was held in Hangzhou in November The 7th China-Korea-Japan Joint Workshops on Neurobiology and Neurinformatics was held in Xiamen in November The first International Workshop on Nonlinear Brain was held in Hangzhou, June 9-10, Academic Activities and Training Meetings of NIWG-China Training courses on neuroinformatics Neuroinformatics Letters

10 Neuroinformatic Data Sharing in China The work of Neuroinformatics Work Group of China has done effort to promote neuroinformatics data sharing in China for more than 8 years A special session entitled Brain Bank was organized as a part of the 20th International CODATA Conference by the Neuroinformatics Work Group of China Special sessions are regularly organized in the international conferences held in China 2005 International Conference on Natural Computation in Changsha 1 st International Conference on Cognitive Neurodynamics -ICCN'07 in Shanghai 2 nd International Conference on Cognitive Neurodynamics in Hangzhou-ICCN'09 The Brain Bank as a professional website was developed

11 Brain Bank Chinese National Node of Neuroinformatics The Brain Bank is a professional website developed by the Neuroinformatics Working Group of China and Computer Network Information Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CNIC, CAS) According to general disposition of the Organization of international Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)-- --Global Science Forum(GSF)- Neuroinformatics (NI Supported by the 973 great international cooperation project-- --Chinese node of the international neuroinformatics network

12 Main missions integrate neuroinformatics data resources with Chinese characteristics build up a research network environment for global cooperation utilize the technique of computer network to link the international databases relevant with brain and neuroinformatics research manage data from preservation to sharing and value extraction and addition enhance international cooperation on brain research together with international organizations provide scientific data sharing service

14 Overview of Neuroinformatics in the World The International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF) coordinates international activities in neuroscience and related fields. Established in 2005 through the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Science Forum, the INCF Fosters worldwide collaboration and data sharing in neuroscience in order to advance our understanding of the human brain and its diseases.
