5 KEYNOTE SPEAKER 1 Maria Araujo Manager R&D High Reliability Systems Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, TX Smart LEak Detection (SLED) Technology ABSTRACT: TBA Biography: Ms. Araujo leads a team of engineers and scientists that are responsible for several areas of technologies related to the application of machine learning and data mining techniques in a variety of industries, including automotive, oil and gas, smart energy, space, manufacturing, and transportation. Her team has been involved in initiatives to advance related big data technologies, primarily involving the application of data mining techniques to identify predictive aspects in large data sets for the enhancement or creation of decision support systems. The team is also focused on the development of high reliability software (for a variety of space, aerospace, and automotive applications), operating as a Maturity Level 5 organization consistent with the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). Ms. Araujo was selected by the San Antonio Business Journal as a top 40 under 40 in 2017 and is a recipient of an R&D 100 award. Ms. Araujo was the lead developer on the Smart LEak Detection (SLED) technology, which utilizes a combination of optical sensors (IR cameras) to create a technology that can reliably detect small leaks in hazardous liquids pipelines using convolutional neural networks. SLED was the recipient of an R&D 100 award in She is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) on a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) project that is focused on combining deep learning and machine vision techniques to detect methane leaks in oil and gas facilities. A few other initiatives of Ms. Araujo's team include the application of machine learning and big data techniques to detect anomalies and incidents using satellite imagery and predicting traffic conditions based on available sensor data in existing U.S. highways. Ms. Araujo is also serving as Control Account Manager (CAM) for the flight software development efforts for the Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) instrument for the European Space Agency's (ESA) JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission as well as the UVS instrument for National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Europa mission. In these roles, Ms. Araujo is responsible for the planning, coordination, Earned Value (EV) management, and achievement of all work within the flight software Control Account (CA), and is also responsible for managing all the scope, technical, and cost issues for the CA. Prior to joining Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), Ms. Araujo worked at Honeywell Aerospace where she led the development of the embedded software for two motor controllers that were certified in accordance with DO-178B Level D and are today flying in revenue service airplanes. Ms. Araujo has authored over 20 publications and has presented at numerous conferences. Ms. Araujo is also fluent in Portuguese.

Erol PhD Candidate, ACE Laboratories The University of Texas at San Antonio Human Robot Interactions: Emerging Technologies, Behavioral and Emotional Approaches ABSTRACT: During last decades, researchers, engineers, companies, and governments are getting more interested robotic applications, such as in defense industry, engineering, medical and biomedical engineering, even in energy production and maintaining the transmission lines. On the other hand, this robotic research has derived different applications and interfaces for multiple purposes. The most important and crucial focus in all is the involvement of humans in the system. Furthermore, the human-robot interaction is primarily important for any kind of system and development processes, especially robotic applications. These applications however, are barely focusing on the assistive robots and their interactions with human. For these purposes, in this presentation we will discuss the historical procedure of the assistance/service robots and their task related evolution and ethics; then, a survey will be provided. In addition to these, highlighting the improvement stages of the assistive robots and how they mimic human gestures and are transformed into humanoids will be discussed. Task or work capabilities and engagements on the human interactions will be visited. Biography: Berat Alper Erol holds BSc degree in Mathematics. He holds MSc degree in Software Engineering and is pursuing his PhD in the ACE Labs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His research interests mainly focus on Human-Robot Interaction, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), Visual SLAM, Cloud-based robotic control, Cloud Computing, Machine Learning and 3D printing for rapid prototyping.
