2 April 2015 STEAM SUPREME 2 What a great rally! With perfect weather and a diverse range of interesting displays it was universally agreed that both visitors and members thoroughly enjoyed themselves which at the end of the day made it all feel worthwhile. This is all what the SteamFest is about, making sure our visitors have a good time and come back again soon and brings some friends. Bringing Pleasure to our Visitors We definitely benefited from the flow over of both visitors and exhibitors from the National Rally the week before in Tasmania with a number taking the opportunity to do both rallies including a bus load on tour from the UK. Many favourable comments were heard with the UK visitors Photo Jo Lloyd Above A great innovation is allowing the public into the arena after the vehicles in the grand parade have been shut down. This gives a chance for a close up look at steam engines and tractors and allows them to have a chat with the operators. Just look at the pleasure a chance to see in bigfoot brings as Sparks and Warwick, on the mound to the right, give a commentary on its history and workings. Many first time visitors were incredulous that we recued something like this and got it working. amazed that a club could have a Museum and Grounds like ours. To them 16 acres in the middle of a capital city is unheard of let alone our park like surroundings of the sort of thing reserved for stately homes back in blighty. They were mightily impressed by the range and diversity of operating machinery to be seen and the fact that the owners were so approachable. Local visitors that had not been for a few years were impressed at the improvements that had been made around the grounds and the greater number of exhibits presented to a high standard. 3 April 2015 STEAM SUPREME 3 Below Our classic vehicle line up always brings pleasure to owners and visitors alike. The orange vehicle on the left is a HJ Sandman panel van owned from new by Adam Powell s father Michael. Fortunately it survived that grey period when it sat around off the road before becoming a classic Michael being in the antique trade has derived great pleasure carrying out a sympathetic restoration. It also brought back good memories for your Editor as a 308 Sandman was the thing to have when he started at GMH.. Center is Chris McDonald s hurdy girdy while to the extreme right are Phil Randall s Plymouth and Paul McMillan s Essex and Cadillac. You could see our visitors head going round as he followed the movement of the motion work with his eyes. 4 April 2015 STEAM SUPREME 4 Members Having a Good Time Members also enjoyed themselves. Perhaps the greatest thrill was being able to demonstrate to genuinely interested visitors a particular piece of machinery operating for the first time since being brought back from the dead. Right The look on Adam Powell s face says it all as he successfully powers the Lyttelton steering engine on steam from his Wiles cooker boiler. A great achievement considering the amount of work he put into building the unit up from scratch, passing it s inspection and getting his steam ticket. Back in action after a protracted 15 year restoration it performed flawlessly. Remember the jigsaw puzzle of pieces that was beside the train shed? One in particular was the earthmoving displays put on in the back paddock by the Morris s and the horse people.

5 April 2015 STEAM SUPREME 5 Left This Cat 65 brings back old memories of days as a William Adams Diesel mechanic for Eddie Bedwell as he sets up the injection system on its Diesel engine. This 1932 machine owned and restored by Neil Clydsdale as well as a Cat 60 with snow cab was kindly brought to the rally by Andrew Jackson on their way back from the National rally in Tasmania Right Neil Meyers and Sam Newman relax at the end of the day when all the effort put into getting the Ploughing engine and Sam's Sentinel waggon ( below) back in steam for the entertainment of the public seems worthwhile. Outstanding Displays We had a number of outstanding displays which bought much favourable comment from our visiting public. One in particular was the earthmoving displays put on in the back paddock by the Morris s and the horse people. The bus load of 38 English tourists on Saturday morning were so impressed they soon realized they had not scheduled enough time to have a look at everything as they had an appointment with Puffing Billy so part of the group returned later in the afternoon for a closer look particularly at the earthmoving equipment. One item they were fascinated by was the Morris s WW2 Back Loader or as they called it an Up and Over so a demonstration of it in action was quickly Above The Up & Over arranged to their delight. An innovation of the Morris s for the Monday was to team up with the Horses for displays of the way things were done in the old and older days. A couple of themes where acted out one with graders and the other was scoops/ scrapers. Below A progression of graders with a Cat 12 motor grader from the 60 s at the front followed by a WW2 Galeon from the 40 s next is a heavy towed grader behind a bulldozer. April 2015 STEAM SUPREME 6 Special Displays continued This year the Blacksmith shop really came into it s own after all the work by Stephen and Ron getting the shop set up

6 April 2015 STEAM SUPREME 6 Special Displays continued This year the Blacksmith shop really came into it s own after all the work by Stephen and Ron getting the shop set up properly. The crowd was transfixed with heavy forging demonstrations using the mighty steam hammer. The process started with hammering out a short piece of shaft into a long rod then cutting it into lengths with a chisel under the hammer. After reheating it was slammed into a specially shaped die to produce a blank for a bolt with a square shank under the flanged head. Right Stephen Nicoll forging a bolt in the specially shaped die. It certainly held the crowd s attention who are more used to seeing miniature horse shoes made from 1/2 cold lengths of wire. Insert The end result big plough bolts. Left Vintage Radios got lots of close inspection from fascinated visitors although at first some of the younger ones where not too sure what they were. The exhibitors were very pleased with being accommodated in the tea rooms as it provided a safe and dust free environment and with this sort of display area would like to be invited next year. Below A fine sketch of a steam roller presented to the club during the rally by Graeme Kemp. Graeme, a long time friend of the club usually has a folder of new sketches to show friends. Done mostly by memory the level of detail he includes in his machinery drawings is amazing.
