2 Ten years ago he build the world's biggest privately built and operated submarine. Four years later he launched his first rocket into space. Now he will launch himself into space and safely return - becoming the first amateur astronaut in the world. The impossible is possible - if you believe it He is Peter Madsen. The first two, UC1 Freya and UC2 Kraka explores the technologies of diesel electric submarines. 7 Timeline: Upwards and Onwards In 2008 Peter Madsen founded Copenhagen Suborbitals with Kristian Von Bengtson. The goal was to design and launch a privately operated one-manned spacecraft. Von Bengtson led the design and construction of the spacecraft, Madsen led the design of the launch system, the launchpad and the HEAT X hybrid rocket booster. Initially, the launch pad was combined with the submarine Nautilus to form the world s only privately owned and operated ballistic missile submarine. In 2010 Copenhagen Suborbitals featured in the media all over the world for their first launch attempt of the HEAT-1X rocket. Unfortunately a malfunction occurred. 10 Timeline: Now we re here. In 2014 Peter Madsen and Kristian Von Bengtson dissolved their partnership due to disagreements. But that didn t stop Peter Madsen. Shortly afterwards he founded RML Spacelab. A lab where nothing is impossible. And where science and innovation meets practical engineering. Now the construction of a bigger, more versatile semi-submersible launch platform, for the powerful multi-engine HEAT-3X hybrid rocket, is under way. New launch platform (under construction). Finishes in 2017.
