If you love Tumblr, if you know what Browncoats and Cumberbunnies are, or if you have ever penned a word of fan fiction, this is the section for you (and even if you have no idea what any of that is, you will by the end of this course). We ll discuss some classic and some contemporary literature that has inspired the most devoted fandoms out there Sherlockians, Janeites, Tolkienites, and Nerdfighters and discuss how fans suit the source literature to their own purposes. NOTE: in addition to the texts listed below, students will also be required to read supplementary critical materials that will be provided in class and online. In this section of English 02 we will read literature that explores the nature of identity. Many of us first discover This section of 02 can a sense of self in social terms: we live count towards an Associate of Arts specialization in inside familes, with friends, and and in International/Intercultural communities. At some point, however, Relations. we begin to look inside ourselves how do we think and feel about our own experiences? Thus too, philosophical questions emerge: what does it mean to be human? Why are we here? As well, science is introducing new questions about identity: what is the relationship between the self and the brain? Between, for example, a mind and a computer? This course surveys the terrain of your own lifelong voyage of discovery to your self. Fitzgerald Shaffer Hornby Booklist The Great Gatsby Equus High Fidelity 050 [33732] Tuesday, 6:30-9:30pm New West

Instructor N. Squair In this course we will examine the increasingly popular genre of life writing. We ll discuss why such writing is so popular in a culture where we watch reality shows, read about the lives of celebrities online, and follow blogs, and we will examine several different forms of life writing: diaries, memoirs, and a mock autobiography. As we explore the themes of isolation and difference, we will also explore how diaries and autobiographies function as literary works, and reflect on how the form and content of life writing is affected by the culture and historical circumstances of the writer. NOTE: The course texts are available at the New Westminster campus bookstore, but may also be purchased (new or used) from any bookseller. 11 Reading Fiction Reading Fiction (English 06) emphasizes the close reading of novels and short stories. Texts for the course will cover at least three different kinds of fiction, for example, realist and naturalist, fantasy and science fiction, romance, mystery. 0 6

0 6 Instructor R. Clark In this section of English 06, we will explore five novels, based on genuine historical incidents, in which characters find themselves in extremely dangerous situations. The novels feature journeys into foreign territory, and involve love, war, and the search for meaning. Moore Greene Koch Vonnegut Moore & Williams Booklist Black Robe The Quiet American The Year of Living Dangerously Slaughterhouse-Five Promethea 00 [32083] Mon/Wed, 2:30-4:30pm New West 004 [32764] Tuesday, 2:30-3:30pm New West Instructor J. Hoekstra Over the centuries, novels indeed, fiction in general that has been inducted into the canon of literary works, has for the most part been written by white, upper- and middle-class men. This section of 06 has as its focus women s contemporary literature, specifically, works from writers who site themselves outside the mainstream. During the semester, we will use these texts to examine the ways in which women writers explore their divergent identities, cultures, perspectives, and ideologies. 13 Instructor W. Emilsson This course focuses on some of the key authors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, for example, Poe, Maupassant, Chekhov, Joyce, Woolf, and Hemingway. Particular attention will be paid to the techniques of close reading, which will be linked to the way reading fiction enhances our lives, and how fiction helps us gain a better understanding of reality. Bausch & Cassell, eds. Christie Orwell Booklist Norton Anthology of Short Fiction, Shorter 7ed. Evil Under the Sun Nineteen Eighty-Four 005 [33495] Mon/Wed, 2:30-2:30pm New West 0 6

Instructor I. Cikes This class will focus on fiction from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century, examining each major form (the short story, novella, and the novel) and various genres (fantasy, science fiction, horror, suspense) through the theme of that which we fear the oldest and strongest emotion, according to horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. Although not all these works are horror fictions, each presents an element of fear, some aspect of human experience that makes us (or others) cringe. Through this lens, we will ask: What do the stories tell us about what our society deems fearful? What do these fears tell us what we think of ourselves, others, and our world? Poe Wells Stoker Highsmith Flynn Booklist Selected Short Stories The Invisible Man Dracula Strangers on a Train Gone Girl 006 [34774] Monday, :30am-2:30pm New West 00 [33480] Monday, 6:30-9:30pm David Lam Other Sections Instructor L. 15 Reading Poetry English 4 emphasizes the close reading of poetry, including the study of poetic forms, and poetic uses of language, the tools used by poets. Students will study a variety of poets, as well as multiple works of selected poets. 4

4 Instructor S. Briggs Need another English course to complete your programme requirements? Why not consider English 4? Most people hate poetry, but that is only because they have not been taught to appreciate it, or because the person who taught it to them in high school hated poetry too. My goal this semester is to introduce students to the ins and outs of poetry, so they can begin to appreciate its value in their lives. Of course, there are some academic expectations (a couple of essays and some group work), but I think students can expect a bit of fun in this course. Booklist Ellman & O Clair, eds. Norton Modern Poems, 2ed. 002 [33643] Tues/Thur, 2:30-2:30pm New West Instructor T. Matson From the zany rhymes of Shel Silverstein, through the masterful voice of John Donne or the lyricism of Sarah McLachlan, poetry is indeed language at its most distilled (Rita Dove). Whether playful, argumentative, uplifting or tragic, poetry gives voice to the full, rich range of human emotion, thought and experience. This course is designed to enrich your appreciation and understanding of poetic language. To this end, we will engage in the careful reading of numerous English-language poems (and some songs), primarily from the twentieth-century, developing reading and analytical skills while exploring some of the key themes of the modern era. In addition, we will spend some time focused on the American poet, E.E. Cummings, and his quest (in Salman Rushdie s phrase) to stop the world from going to sleep. Rosengarten et al, eds. 19 Reading Plays This course introduces students to the close reading of plays as literature, including discussion of the elements of stagecraft and performance. Plays studied may emphasize a variety of genres (tragedy, comedy, the dramatic monologue), and reflect significant developments in the history of theatre, from its beginnings to the present. 5

Instructor J. Nicholsfiguerdo Plays put stories on a different level not just an imitation of reality, but a counterfeited reality, a pretense that requires the collusion of its audience. This semester, we will explore drama both as performance, and as text,. Booklist TBA 050 [33952] Wednesday, 6:30-9:30pm New West 5

SECOND YEAR COURSES Our second-year courses include the literary-historical survey courses, 26, 27 and 29, as well as Canadian Literature (20), Classical and Biblical Backgrounds (207) and Children s Literature (22). While all these courses, like first year courses, emphasize the application of basic skills of literary analysis to particular literary subjects or periods, you will find them more in-depth and specific in their focus than firstyear courses. Admission to second-year English courses requires a Grade Point Average (GPA) of.67 either in any two university-transfer first-year English courses, or in one university-transfer first-year English course and one universitytransfer Creative Writing course or academic writing course.

2 Studies in Canadian Literature English 0 looks at the literature of our own country, and its relationship to the national culture. Students will examine works of Canadian authors, primarily contemporary, and will read works from at least two of the three major genres fiction, poetry, and drama. 0

2 Instructor B. Gray What does it mean to be Canadian? Are we anything other than just not Americans? How do we define ourselves and how do we recognize each other? What are our common experiences, beliefs, and perspectives? What is the impact of our history as a settler nation? How do we include new Canadian narratives into our understanding of ourselves? English 20 presents a survey of Canadian literature since 967 with the intention of preparing you for future study in Canadian Literature and, at the same time, giving you a sense of some of the themes and ideas that make up the literary identity of Canada. Laurence Richards Ondaatje Munro Highway Booklist A Bird in the House Nights Below Station Street In the Skin of a Lion Hateship, Friendship, Loveship, Courtship, Marriage Kiss of the Fur Queen 00 [3477] Wed/Fri, 0:30am-2:30pm New West 0

2 Children s Literature This course examines significant works of literature created specifically for children. It looks, too, at such traditional sources of children s literature as fables, folk and fairy tales, myths, and legends. 2

2 2 Instructor J. Allwork This section of English 22 begins with a study of fairy tales, both classic and contemporary, and the social, cultural and psychological context that surrounds and infuses them. We then explore how fairy tale themes, such as parental conflict or abandonment and the resulting journey to self-discovery, play out in four children s novels written for middle grade and young adult readers. Booklist Allwork, ed. Coursepack for English 22 Hallett & Karasek Folk and Fairy Tales, 4ed Grahame The Wind in the Willows Pullman The Golden Compass Jones The Maestro Philips Fishtailing 050 [34779] Thursday, 6:30-9:30pm New West Instructor K. Thomson In this hybrid section of English 2 (half of the course activities are online), we will examine the development of children s literature from its origins in folk and fairy tales and in early moral tales to complex modern novels such as Harry Potter. Many children s books feature a place name in their title Anne of Green Gables, The Chronicles of Narnia telling us that are integrally connected to a particular setting, which then becomes a metaphor for childhood itself. This semester we will explore how social ideas about, and attitudes toward children and childhood are revealed in the books: in their characters and events, in their language and themes, and specifically, in the very places where authors set their stories. Booklist Thomson, ed Coursepack for 22 Burnett The Secret Garden Lewis The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Paterson Bridge to Terabithia Pearson The Sky is Falling 002 [34778] Monday, 2:30-2:30pm David Lam j Section 002 offers a hybrid 22, with two hours each week in class, and the remainder on-line. j

2 British Literature 4th-7th centuries This course is a survey of major representative works from the fourteenth through the seventeenth centuries. It encompasses the literature of the middle ages, the reign of Elizabeth I, and the period of the Civil War and Interregnum. The major portion of works studied will be poetry. 6

2 Instructor J. Nicholsfigueiredo Listen! the opening word of the heroic poem Beowulf leads us into the literature of Old English, written over a thousand years ago, and is a fit beginning for a course where we will learn to listen to the voices of men and women who wrote the earliest English literature. Beginning with Old English works, we will explore, in translation, the complexities of the merging of the heroic, the religious and the secular. Our goal in the course will be to learn to hear the unique voices of these writers from the joint perspectives of our century and of their centuries. Although we can never truly know a person who lived centuries ago, we will strive to understand those voices which reach us from such a different time and place. Much of the approach to these works will be a dramatic one, and all students will participate in dramatic productions of medieval plays presented to the class. Booklist Nicholsfigueiredo, ed. Coursepack for 236 Greenblatt, et al Norton Anthology of English Literature, 9Ed, Vol. A 00 [34780] Thursday, 2:30-3:30pm New West 6

2 British Literature 8th-20th centuries English 27 surveys major representative works of the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. It begins with the literature of the Enlightenment, covers Romantic and Victorian literature, finally moving to the Modernism of the early twentieth century. A substantial proportion of the works studied will be poetry, though typically, the course also often includes representative fiction and drama. 7

2 Instructor W. Emilsson This semester, in addition to a substantial amount of poetry, we will be studying several longer works, including Robert Louis Stevenson s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Oscar Wilde s The Importance of Being Earnest. We will pay particular attention to the complex interplay of culture, society, and literature. Booklist Greenblatt, et al. The Norton Anthology of English Literature, 8Ed, Vols C, D, E & F 050 [3478] Wednesday, 6:30-9:30pm David Lam 7 With much love, Oscar

THIRD-YEAR COURSES Third-year literature courses offer a focussed, in-depth study of a particular historical era, genre, or writer. They are available to students completing diplomas, Associate of Arts degrees, or Bachelor s degrees, and open to students who meet the prerequisites, whether they are potential English majors, or students in other disciplines who require upper-division general arts electives. For admission to third-year courses, students must meet the pre-requisites for second-year courses, as well as having successfully completed 45 credit hours, or upon request for special permission from the instrutor. Experience in at least one second-year English course (any of those numbered 2xx) is strongly recommended.

3 Topics in Life Writing In this course, students will explore life writing in a variety of forms, such as creative nonfiction, biography, memoir, travel literature, diaries and letters. Additionally, for purposes of comparison, students may read some fictional works. 5 0

3 Instructor N. Squair In this course, we will focus on travel narratives, both historical and modern. We will examine the way travel narratives are as much about the writer as they are about the places and people the writer visits. Travel writing has often had political implications as a writer from one culture considered more civilized writes about a less advanced area of the world. Thus travel writing is not just about describing a journey; it works on social, cultural, and political levels to shape world views. We will be reading travel narratives both as literary texts and as products of their time and culture. Booklist Squair, ed.
