3 CONTRIBUTORS This is a magazine created by the English Curriculum Leaders of 2016, for our students to read and enjoy. We have put time and effort into this magazine and each student has contributed an article to share. It is called The Blue Planet. The students involved in producing the magazine are Jessica Blackman, Alice Brunning, Emilie Ratcliff, Ben Richards, Rachael Shoesmith, Jasmine Linsey, Grace McDonnell, Aimee Berhane, along with help from Miss Millar. We hope you enjoy!

Where the fun begins... I am sure many of you have now heard of Rush,the latest trampoline park in High Wycombe.

For those who love to bounce it is a dream come true to have an hour full of enthusiastic jumping.

4 Where the fun begins... I am sure many of you have now heard of Rush,the latest trampoline park in High Wycombe. For those of you who don t know, it is an amazing park with lots of activities/challenges to complete. For those who love to bounce it is a dream come true to have an hour full of enthusiastic jumping. Rush UK, High Wycombe, has over 30,000 square feet of trampolining challenges including over 17,000 square feet of trampolines, a climbing challenge (trying to get up a wall from bouncing off a trampoline), two dodgeball courts, two basketball hoop lanes, a foam pit, three tumble lanes, a free-fall stunt jump air bag and a battle beam. This is just the start of how much pleasure and excitement you will experience at Rush. If you are concerned this is an unsafe park, you are wrong. The number one rule at Rush is to be safe; they have tightly managed safety rules and procedures throughout the park to ensure that the customers can enjoy the park to its full potential while significantly reducing the chance of injury. Therefore, all you need to think about (apart from the rules) is enjoying yourself! As well as having a tremendous time it s also a great place to keep fit and healthy, as these comments show: To me, trampolining is exercise in disguise. "It s not only an effective form of exercise, but more importantly it s a lot of fun. From personal experience I find Rush a pleasurable environment where you can let your hair loose. I went with my friend and sisters and we had a gripping time, running competitions of who could do the most flips and turns. For people who have a passion for being active this is truly a dream come true and I believe it will succeed and storm into the lead for trampoline parks in the UK. With so many facilities, what could go wrong? There's no holding back here: let loose and become a wild child!

6 Book Review The 5th Wave The 5 th Wave by Rick Yancey tells the tale of an alien ship coming into Earth s orbit. The others - as they come to be known - proceed to try to wipe out humanity in a series of waves. The first wave: an electromagnetic pulse that plunges the planet darkness, without power. The second: a giant metal slab sent crashing from high into the seas, releasing a tsunami that drowns the world s coastlines. The third: a virus that wipes out 99 %of the remaining population. The fourth: body-snatched humans implanted with an alien consciousness, who stalk the few survivors remaining. The novel s action comes down to four main characters: Cassie an underappreciated 12-year-old tomboy; Sam, her little brother; Ben, the high school star she s worshiped from afar; and Evan, the mysterious one. After her parents die her mother from the plague, her father at the hands of a soldier who may or may not be human Cassie, armed, embarks on a quest to find her brother who has been taken away with other children. Wounded by an unseen alien sniper, she is rescued by Evan; the two join forces, even though his explanation about how he s survived doesn t seem to fit. Not far away, Ben, tortured by memories of abandoning his little sister, is recruited to lead a unit of child soldiers to go after the infested humans whose bodies have been co-opted by the others. Their stories come together which leads to a final action set piece that ties everything together. The book was filled with action, plot twists and a bit of romance. Yancey has succeeded in making this event just as realistic as any other world disaster. I would recommend it to anyone who likes sci-fi and dystopian themed books. The 5 th Wave is the first book in a trilogy including The infinite Sea and the last Star.

Social media is a term used to describe the interaction between groups or individuals in which they produce, share and exchange ideas over the internet and in virtual communities. Some people see social media as a new way to keep in touch with friends, while other see it as a disease. What do you think? The impact of social networks on young people is significant. Children are growing up surrounded by mobile devices and interactive social networking sites; social media is now a part of their everyday life. The positive effect of social media is that it can help people achieve skills and seek business opportunities. Though on the negative side, the internet is covered with a number of risks associated with online communities. Cyber bullying, which refers to a type of bullying that is perpetuated using technology, is one of the risks. Bullies have taken to internet sites such as Twitter and Facebook, where they hide behind anonymity provided by the internet to carry out their despicable messages. New studies reveal that social media has the ability to sway people to spend money by running advertisements on the user s page. Such forms of advertising can cause a person to buy certain merchandise. It is becoming increasingly clear that social networks have become a part of people s lives. Many young people are using tablets, computers and smartphones to check Tweets and status updates from their friends and family. As technology advances, more people are pressured to adopt the lifestyle. Social networking sites can assist young people to become more socially capable. However, they may also make them clumsy and independent as well. It can cause people to stay at home on social media instead of exercising and socialising. Also, social networking sites have age restrictions (most are ages 13+) but still children younger than this are managing to create pages - even 8 year olds. This makes them more open to cyber bullying and attached to the adult world. Overall, there are pros and cons to social media, therefore I decided to leave the conclusion to you. Do you think social media is a good thing or a bad thing?
