The bandwidth of an oscilloscope is typically measured at the -3 db roll-off point which equals 70.79% of the voltage Bandwidth has 2 major impacts on signal measurements: Amplitude attenuation Rise Time From the bandwidth you can infer the rise time: Instrument RT = ~0.35/BW Measurement risetime is (RTscope 2 + RTsignal 2 ) Bandwidth 5X Rule: To limit risetime error have at least 5X the bandwidth of the signal you are analyzing

The Nyquist theorem states that you need to sample at 2* the max frequency you are looking for Insufficient for accurately capturing and displaying fast and inconsistent signals Best practice is to have 5 times oversampling (5X Rule) Impacts of Undersampling Waveform Distortion Waveform Aliasing Higher the Sample-Rate the better the resolution Under-sampling can lead to errors The results can t be guaranteed with certainty unless the signal is sufficiently sampled Waveform Loss

23 Key Specifications Memory Depth Why do you care about Memory Depth? Sample rate combines with memory depth to determine the length of the waveform capture Typically, we extend the memory to continue using the highest possible sampling rate for as long as possible. For instance sampling at 10GSa/sec with 100M Record will allow a 1ms capture or 5ms with 500M Conversely, with 500M record length and 1GSa/sec sampling (Nyquist at 500MHz) you can capture a full half second.
