3 GENERAL INFORMATION 1. General information 1.1. Purpose Ultrasonic flaw detector Velograph II is meant to search for violations of continuity and uniformity of the material and determine their coordinate in products from metals and plastics. The device allows you to control welds, measure the thickness of the walls of the product, to search places of corrosion, cracks, delaminations and other internal defects Basic principles of use The ability to detect defects in the products material with ultrasonic flaw detector is based on the fact that in the majority of solid materials, especially in metals, ultrasonic waves propagate well. At the same time they are reflected from the boundaries of the internal heterogeneity of the material. The work of the device is based on this. An ultrasonic flaw detector periodically sends short pulses of ultrasonic waves using ultrasonic transducer into controlled object. Using the same ultrasonic transducer pulses reflected or passed back through the material of the ultrasonic waves are converted into electrical signals and fed to the electronic unit flaw. After amplification, digitization and processing using embedded processor, signals are transmitted via a wireless protocol into a portable digital assistant (PDA) and displayed on the LCD screen. The signals are displayed on a flaw detector in the same way as in an oscilloscope screen coordinates amplitude - time. The vertical axis represents the amplitude, and the horizontal - time. The origin is in the lower left corner of the screen. The amplitude of the echo signal carries information primarily about the magnitude of the object reflector of control or the degree of "transparency" of the material passed at reception of ultrasonic waves. Signal delay time, that is its position on the time axis indicates the magnitude path along which the signal passed. This value is easy to calculate, knowing the speed of wave propagation in the material. The most commonly used is a representation of the signals on the flaw detector screen. It briefly called A-scan. When the flaw detector echo technique with a combined or separately-joinable converter temporary position echoes on the screen is proportional to the distance from the transducer location of the reflectors. In this case, the ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 3

Semi-automatic tuning differs ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 27

28 DEVICE CONTROL from the automatic one in that it is necessary to manually set the gates for echoes and / or adjust the gain. Before starting the scripts, you need to make sure that the installed channels of the generator and amplifier correspond to the connection channels of the converter (see 4.1.2, 5.3). If necessary, the delay in the prism of the converter is calculated as: T "#$%& = d )T * d * T ) 2(d ) d * ) where T "#$%& delay in prism, d ) и d * known distances to the reflectors of a calibration or tuning sample, T ) и T * defined pulse delay times from these reflectors. Speed of sound is calculated as: c = 2(d ) d * ) T ) T * where c speed of sound in a calibration sample. For inclined transducers, the input angle is calculated as: z α = arccos 5 c 7 T 2 T "#$%&8 + D ; 2 where α input angle, z depth of the cylindrical reflector, T the definite pulse delay from the reflector, D the diameter of the cylindrical reflector. In semiautomatic tuning TVG to adjust the signal amplitude a modifier to the current point is calculated as: V = 20 log A C&D A where V gain increase in decibels, A C&D specified amplitude of the signal, A current signal amplitude in the gate. With semi-automatic adjustment of the DAC, a curve is constructed in accordance with the formula for the amplitudes of the echoes reflected from a disk or a flat-bottomed hole in the far zone of the converter: ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 28

29 DEVICE CONTROL A = A ) s d ) * d * s ) e G*H(IGI J) where the amplitude of the echo of the reflector corresponding to the mark of the DAC curve, the ultrasound path from the converter plate to the reflector corresponding to the curve label, the amplitude of the signal from the tuning reflector, the area of the reflector for which the curve is constructed, the equivalent area of the tuning reflector, path from the converter plate to the tuning reflector, is the amount of attenuation of ultrasound in the material of the monitoring object. For a lateral cylindrical reflector, the amplitude is recalculated in accordance with the equivalent area, the distance to the reflector and the wavelength of ultrasound. The constructed curve will be valid only for the level of gain at which it was built (considering the increase in gain before plotting the curve). ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 29

Appendix Software and thickness gauge electronic device Improved equipment kits can include additional software (thickness gauge software), which simplifies the thickness measurement using a Velograph II flaw detector and a direct converter (separately combined or combined). It provides an additional possibility of specifying the allowed thickness values, as well as the sweep of the measured thickness in time. For simplicity of use, most of the adjustment functions are excluded. However, technical specifications (including the accuracy of measurements) are kept equal to the ones in the base kit. Furthermore, the improved kits can include the tiny electronic device with the thickness measuring software installed for even more convenience Electronic device The appearance of the electronic device is shown in Fig. 16. Device is switched on by a long press of the "power" button. Device is charged using the supplied USB cable and the electronic unit charger. To start the program, click on the splash screen and find the corresponding icon in the menu (you can scroll through the menu with your finger up or down outside the icons). Closing programs and exiting the menu is carried out by swiping from the left edge of the screen to the right. 1 1 Power button Рис. 16. Electronic device ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 37

38 APPENDIX Управление ПО толщиномера A general view of the software interface is shown in Figure 17. There are 4 modes: thickness display, thickness setting, A-scan, thickness sweep. Switch modes by clicking on their icons in the upper left corner. The functionality of the "On" / "Off" button, the indication of communication with the device and the indication of charging of the device is identical to the basic software (see 3.1, 4.1.1). In all modes, in addition to "setting the allowable thickness", the last measured thickness value is displayed. To perform a thickness measurement, it is necessary to adjust the parameters of the converter, the channels of the generator and the amplifier, the sound speed in the monitoring object in the base software, then exit the basic program and launch the program "Velograph_II_t". Conduct the interface with the device (similar to 3.1), then produce a thickness gauge. Or use the automatic setting function (see 9.3.2). Simultaneous connection of the electronic unit of the flaw detector with two different devices is impossible. Disconnect the program in advance or connect to the device in the running program if you are switching to using another device (PDA) Рис. 17. Display after pairing with main block ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 38

39 APPENDIX Thickness display mode The measured thickness and thickness diagram are displayed (Figure 18). If the measured thickness is less than the specified minimum allowable value, the bar chart is displayed in red. If the thickness exceeds the set maximum allowable value, the bar chart is displayed in blue. In other cases, the strip of green color. Рис. 18. Thickness display mode Thickness setting mode Adjustable in this mode, the smallest and largest thicknesses can have one of two functions: The border of the displayed thickness Allowable thickness value The functions are switched by clicking on the check mark to the left of the thickness value (the checkmark corresponds to the function of the allowable value) (Figure 19). If a thickness boundary is specified, the diagram in the thickness display mode and the thickness sweep will start (end) with this value and will not be painted at all (it will be completely covered with green instead of blue) if the thickness is less (larger). Also, the value of the range expansion is set lower (higher) than the permissible thickness in percent from the difference between the maximum and minimum thicknesses. Expansion is possible from 0% to 200%. To set values, click on them, enter the changed value, and click "Next" or "Finish". ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 39

40 APPENDIX 1 These values do not affect the thickness measurement and its displayed value. They are only used for plotting the scale of the chart and the scale of the thickness sweep. The button "Settings" starts a step-by-step scenario of automatic adjustment of the parameters of the direct converter and the speed of sound on the tuning sample. When using a direct combined converter, you must first connect it to the first socket. While the script is running, the mode will be switched to "Ascan". In the query "The type of PEP used" it should be ticked "separatelycombined" for the appropriate type of converter, and not set for a combined converter. Рис. 19. Thickness setting mode A-scan mode An A-scan is displayed with a scale of whole millimeters (tens of millimeters) without signatures (Figure 20). The lines corresponding to every tenth (one hundredth) millimeter are wider. A gate is also displayed, the intersections of which determine the signal times, the GVH curve (if it was built), and the tuned speed of sound. The speed of sound can be adjusted manually, by clicking on its value and entering a new value. Control of sweep and strobe is not provided, for this use the basic software on the PDA. Рис. 20. A-scan mode ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 40

41 APPENDIX Thickness sweep mode The sweep of the measured thickness is displayed, with a scale in whole millimeters (Figure 21). The colors of the regions are similar to the colors of the thickness diagram. Valid thicknesses values (if set) are displayed in dashed lines of the corresponding color. Updating of a sweep with new measurements is carried out only when this mode is enabled. Рис. 21. Thickness sweep mode ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTOR - VELOGRAPH II 41
