2 Voltage Introduction The Tekscope is a hand held digital oscilloscope. It is intended to be used to measure both the power line frequency and higher frequency components of steady state and transient voltages that may be present in the cow contact area. Definitions Waveform: The path traced by the voltage and plotted as a function of time. Instantaneous Value: The magnitude of the waveform a any instant in time. The magnitude is obtained from the vertical axis. This value can be obtained from interpreting it from the volts/div setting or use of the cursors function of the Tekscope. Periodic Waveform: A waveform that continually repeats itself in regular intervals. ie: 60Hz contribution in the cow contact area. Period (T): The time between regular intervals. Cycle: The portion of a waveform contained in one period. Frequency (f): The number of cycles in one second measured in Hertz (Hz). Figure mS/div 500mV/div One period (T) Time 1Hz (Hertz) = 1c/s (cycle per second) T = 1/f or f =1/T T = one period measured in seconds f = frequency measured in Hertz Example

3 2 One period at 60Hz 16.67ms 1/60Hz.01667s and 1/.01667s 60Hz Note: For a clean sine wave, the AC rms value of the waveform is the peak value divided by the square root of 2. In Figure 1 the maximum value (or peak value) of the waveform is 0.707V the ACrms value is 0.50V Scientific Notation Prefix Abbreviation Power of 10 Nano n = 10-9 Micro = 10-6 Milli m = 10-3 Kilo k 1000 = 10 3 Mega M = 10 6 Giga G =10 9 If one has a unit with a prefix and wishes to remove the prefix (ie: millisecond to seconds), multiply by the power of 10. To add a prefix to a unit (ie: volts to millivolts), divide by the power of 10. Examples 0.026V (volts).026 X mV (millivolts) 16.67ms (milliseconds) X s (seconds)

4 Voltage (Zero to Peak) 500 Ohm Cow Contact 3 TRANSIENT LEVELS OF CONCERN The following table is interpreted from ASAE Paper Number Effects of Frequency and Duration on the Sensitivity of Dairy Cows to Transient Voltages by Reinamann etal. Phase Duration 600 Hz = 835 sec 6,000 Hz = 83.5 sec 60,000 Hz = 8.35 sec Phase duration is the time between zero crossings Phase Duration Tp ( sec) Threshold Voltage* Vt (Peak V) Threshold Current It (Peak ma) < *Across 500 resistor 10,000 1,000 Behavioral response for 5% most sensitive cows, sine waves muzzle to hooves exposure Fencers 1 cycle Biphasic 1 cycle Monophasic Multi Cycle Phase Duration (microseconds) = time between zero crossings Reinemann (Reinemann 2002)

5 4 Overview of Steps Goal: Want to have a common setting that can be recalled by any ag rep for comparison to other reps measurements. Listed is an overview of what this setup will provide: This basic setup will provide a 20 second rolling view on the Tekscope. o The Tekscope will detect single pulses as low as 2 Microseconds but will not identify duration without changing the time on the horizontal axis. Triggering will not be needed for the 20 second view but will be needed when set at or below 200ms SEC/DIV on horizontal axis. If the capture of a specific event is desired, just decrease the Horizontal SEC/DIV to 200ms or less and use RUN/STOP button to reset trigger (no change of Acquire is necessary). TEKSCOPE settings as suggested for Ag Rep Italic is what you need to change SAVE/RECALL Step 1 Recall Factory Setup Step 2 OK Recall Setup Step 3 VERTICAL Changes below. If not listed, the factory setting is same. Display CH1 and turn all other waveforms off. 7 6 Play-by-Play Store a setting as user 2 Overview of Steps: Reset to factory default (If you want to save your own settings, save to user 3). Change settings to common set up for VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL, TRIGGER, and MENUS. Save settings so that setup can be recalled at any time. 1. RESET to factory default SAVE/RECALL Step 1 Recall Factory Setup Step 2 OK Recall Setup Step 3 TRIGGER LEVEL Pushing CLEAR MENU will clear the display of the settings being changed.
