CASE STUDIES Mission: Tactical and Strategic Communications in Iraq Customer: British Army - Operation Teliq Advent Communications was tasked with supplying a solution designed for tactical and strategic duties. Talon is a satellite terminal, developed for easy transportability and rapid deployment two trained operators can be up and running in under 30 minutes. It is in service with the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps based in Germany and used extensively across Iraq, in the most severe conditions and operating continuously without failures. Established in 1992, the name of Link Research is synonymous with the world s most advanced wireless camera systems, deployed by international broadcasters for high performance duties where transmission integrity is paramount. From newsgathering around the globe, to motor racing s Formula 1 and the Winter Olympics, our equipment is designed to operate in the most inhospitable and severe conditions, delivering consistently reliable results. Link s technology encompasses proprietary encoding and modulator solutions, including the first ever High Definition (HD) wireless camera system to see active service. Mission: Secure wireless communications at Baghdad Airport in Iraq Customer: US Department of Defense MRC s microwave technology is regularly deployed by the US military, integrated with existing electronics hardware to enhance conflict zone communications capability in remote and mobile operations. This project involved replacing cable links that could potentially be compromised during field operations, with MRC troposphere satellite support radios deployed to provide tactical communications links for allied forces.

Field-proven Antenna and Uplink Technology Advent Communications latest system the Summit is designed to address military and government agency requirements It is a fully motorised, one-point auto acquisition flyaway satellite terminal, using high quality military standard solid state amplifiers and cartridge assemblies. Facilities include remote Internet and VPN connectivity, and high performance video conferencing. The Summit antenna is complemented by Advent Communications Mantis Flyaway antenna range, available from 1m upwards systems in single, dual, tri and quad band configurations for C, X, Ku, Ka and DBS bands. Conceived as a robust lightweight, portable system, it is designed to combine with the Advent modulation and RF systems to provide a versatile solution for video, data and IP. For vehicle-mounted requirements, the NewSwifts are available with reflector sizes from 0.9m for smaller vehicle installations to 1.2m upwards systems for Ku and multiband operations. Hundreds of NewSwift systems are currently deployed in the field, with an unrivalled track record for reliability and robust performance. NewSwifts are particularly suitable for fast-access applications such as network restoration, disaster relief, and networked communications. Other recent advances include the launch of Advent Communications state of the art 5000 Series electronics units, combining two half-size units to provide a complete satellite transmission chain in a single and highly portable 1U rack. Hardened Microwave Solutions MRC produces a range of hardened microwave solutions across voice and IP data that are designed specifically for defence and homeland security applications, with coverage extending from 1 to 80km. For example, the US Air Force, Marines and Army have deployed our MRC transportable point-to-point microwave system, supporting the terrestrial transmission of voice and data communications to tactical nodes and command centres.

From the Air Our airborne systems cover ranges well in excess of 100km, and are deployed by more than ten public safety agencies, including US and European police forces. By combining the latest advances in digital camera technology with gyro-stabilised mounts, improved lens quality and robust digital microwave systems, we provide the means of capturing and transmitting stable, pin sharp images to ground-based personnel consistently and quickly. Our proprietary digital COFDM transmission system provides noise-free and artefact-free video from signals down to the very weakest levels. In addition, the use of diversity technology provides automatic tracking of the aircraft, without the need for additional aerials or adjustments - maximising efficiency and range. In the Field COFDM digital wireless camera systems have revolutionised broadcasters ability to work in built-up non-lineof-sight environments. Link Research and MRC are at the forefront of this innovative technology, developing a new generation of systems designed for the spectrum of surveillance and intelligence gathering tasks. Our core COFDM technology is entirely designed in-house, including transmitters, receivers, antennas and modulation techniques enabling us to meet specific security requirements. The range includes MRC's QuikVUE hand-held receiver and monitor, enabling real time tactical video and audio communications, receiving signals from airborne or terrestrial transmitters. Our central receive system, combined with proprietary antenna designs, allows deep penetration in the most severely built-up environments. Operating along similar lines to a mobile phone network, the cellular diversity technology allows any wireless camera hand-held, vehicle, bodyworn, or airborne-mounted to be tracked seamlessly as it moves between multiple receive sites, extending the coverage area extensively. The system uses data automatically from multiple antennas to derive video and audio signals. To Mission Control Co-ordinating surveillance and intelligence inputs relies on exceptional reliability for the command centre or mobile command vehicle. For command vehicle applications, our microwave transmission products can be tailored to accommodate a wide range of requirements. Coverage can extend from 1 to over 100km, depending on the equipment selection and whether the application is air to ground, ground to ground, or mobile to mobile. We understand the imperatives behind effective and stable command centre operations whether replacing an out of action command centre or putting crisis management resources into the field. Recent city centre trials of our cellular diversity systems demonstrated a standard 100mW camera transmitting over 1km. The addition of a single 1watt clip-on amplifier extended the radius of coverage to some 2.5km, and with a 5watt booster amplifier, reliable coverage was achieved at 6km.
