Elster and EnergyAxis at the Confluence of AMI and DR Presented By: Mike Tabbert November 8, 2007
Elster Leadership around the world World Headquarters Elster Group Luxembourg Elster is the largest global metering group in the world Center of Excellence for Electric Metering and AMI Technologies Raleigh, North Carolina Owned by CVC Partners $35 Billion in assets 8,500 Worldwide employees 170 years providing solutions for Electric, Water, and Gas utilities Elster Electricity, LLC Elster AMCO Water Elster American Meter Elster Integrated Solutions $1.8+ Billion in annual revenue 200 Million meters installed (EnergyAxis >1M) A leader in 115 markets and 38 countries
We have deployed Elster Systems around the globe Electricity & Water AMI Gas AMR Water AMR
Elster delivering both AMR and AMI 1.7+Million Endpoints deployed in 3 years Over 65 customers worldwide in 10 different countries EnergyAxis North America s #1 Mesh Network for AMI ,000 new endpoints in 2006 EnergyAxis GasAMR WaterAMR
Elster s RF Mesh Controlled Mesh vs. uncontrolled for more robustness and stability Algorithms to quickly scan channels and qualify links External antenna support for both the node and the collector Available non meter Repeater The real measure of a good mesh is field performance! Elster has the largest number of deployed AMI mesh network systems in the world
EnergyAxis Controlled Mesh Network Designed to overcome obstacles Meters provide path diversity to communicate around local obstacles Meters do not require direct line of sight to collector Elster controlled mesh network: Collector (C) sets up the local network Any meter can be a repeater Algorithms emphasize path reliability to each meter both during and after registration C
EnergyAxis Mesh Network Designed for ease of installation & maintenance Network registration, set up, and changes are automatic and transparent to the operator Algorithms continually maximize communication reliability to each meter Paths are allowed to change in an organized fashion when local RF conditions change Meters will attempt to re register if communication is lost (self healing) Meters continually seek a shorter path (fewer hops) to the collector Elster networks are easy to deploy C
EnergyAxis Mesh Network Auto registration 1. Collector meter looks for unregistered nodes 2. Collector checks for reliability and registers Level 1 nodes Collector is single phase or polyphase A3 ALPHA meter with WAN & LAN boards Nodes can be either A3 ALPHA or REX meters Collector Level 1
EnergyAxis Mesh Network Auto registration 1. Collector looks for unregistered nodes 2. Collector registers Level 1 nodes 3. Collector instructs Level 1 nodes to find Level 2 nodes, checks reliability, and sets up Level 2 nodes & repeaters Collector Level 1 Level 2
EnergyAxis Mesh Network Auto registration 1. Collector looks for unregistered nodes 2. Collector registers Level 1 nodes 3. Collector registers Level 2 nodes & repeaters 4. Collector registers Level 3 nodes & repeaters Collector 5. Network continues to build out to a max of 8 hops (7 repeater levels) Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 8
EnergyAxis Mesh Network Auto registration 1. Collector looks for unregistered nodes 2. Collector registers Level 1 nodes 3. Collector registers Level 2 nodes & repeaters 4. Collector registers Level 3 nodes & repeaters Collector 5. Network continues to build out to a max of 8 hops (7 repeater levels) Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 8

Example EnergyAxis Deployments
Examples of how utilities are using AMI Salt River Project (SRP), Phoenix, Arizona Install smart meters at rate of 10K/month (internally). More than 210,000 smart meters are now installed. About 90,000 meters with remote disconnect switch. SRP reads all TOU meters daily from their remote central location. No trip to the meter is required. Performed over 150,000 remote service calls. Complete 1,000 remote disconnect/connects per week.
Examples of how utilities are using AMI Nevada Power in Las Vegas, Nevada uses AMI to handle rapid growth and high turnover areas. On demand meter reads from a remote location for account openings and closings. Connect and disconnect meters for move ins and move outs from a remote location. Deploy to handle meter reading in high growth areas outside of established routes.
Examples of how utilities are using AMI CFE (Comision Federal de Electricidad) has fully integrated their CIS to remotely generate and perform disconnect/connect actions in Mexico City Greatly enhanced safety for employees Significant revenue increase, theft is detected, theft losses down Many meters not accessible
Examples of how utilities are using AMI In the mountainous regions of Puebla, Mexico CFE reads 320 meters monthly from a satellite phone. Monthly savings of approximately $6,000 are generated just by eliminating overtime hours and transportation costs previously required to read the meters.
Examples of how utilities are using AMI Solaire Tower in Orlando, FL: 26 Stories Controlled Access High Transient Rates 300 Electric Meters 300 Water Meters 300 Chilled Water Meters Mesh communicates between floors All read every day
Examples of how utilities are using AMI
Examples of how utilities are using AMI Elster in Ontario The Coalition of Large Distributors (CLD) went through a lengthy procurement process in 2006 CLD utilities consist of: Toronto Hydro, Hydro Ottawa, Enersource, Horizon Utilities, PowerStream, Veridian The CLD selected 5 Vendors of Record Each utility then selected a supplier and negotiated a contract Elster signed contracts with 5 of the 6 CLD utilities 2 ASP s have EnergyAxis systems installed offering reading services 230K EnergyAxis smart meters delivered in 2006 Delivery at a rate of 40 50K per month in 2007 Expect to deliver an additional 500K 1M meters in 2008
Examples of how utilities are using AMI Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) uses AMI to read meters in remote villages. Villages are several hundreds of miles away and are not accessible in the winter. It is impossible to manually read meters in the winter. Meters are read remotely from office in Anchorage, Alaska. AVEC is able to determine if their customers experience a power outage, and can proactively assist.
