The external notch filter mounts on a utility pole. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. 1 DESCRIPTION The Digivance external notch filter is a pole-mounted unit designed for use with a remote antenna in a distributed antenna system. The notch filter is positioned between the antenna and an ADC Digivance Spectrum Transport Module (STM) or similar device. The purpose of the notch filter is to notch out the MHz spectrum of the SMR 800 Tx band to reduce interference with other operators in this band. The notch filter passes all other SMR spectrum ( Rx and Tx) within the SMR 800 band. It is intended for use during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of SMR rebanding. When Phase 3 rebanding goes into effect, the filter will no longer be needed and can be removed. Page 2

(3.96 km) Meets requirements of IP65 for protection from environment (rain, ice, etc.) 3 TOOLS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED The following tools and materials are required for installation: Banding tool (Panduit BT1HT recommended) Banding straps (ADC provided) Grounding wire (size 6 AWG recommended) RF coaxial cables (quantity 2) Page 4

5 4 UNPACKING AND INSPECTION Open the shipping cartons and carefully unpack each component from the protective packing material. Check each component for broken or missing parts. If there are damages, contact ADC for an RMA (Return Material Authorization) and to reorder if replacement is required. For contact information, see Section 6 on Page 8. 5 INSTALLATION The notch filter is mounted on a utility pole using the mounting kit provided. Use the following procedure to install the notch filter. Warning: Never install equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. When installing or modifying communication lines, disconnect lines at the network interface before working with uninsulated lines or terminals. 1. Assemble the mounting bracket on the notch filter in the order shown in Figure A Figure 3. Installing the Mounting Bracket Page 5

6 2. Determine and mark the location on the utility pole where the notch filter will be installed. 3. Insert two banding straps (provided) through the slots in the mounting bracket and place the filter in position for mounting. Note: Mount the notch filter with the two female N type connectors facing down. 4. Snug the banding straps manually. Using a level, assure the notch filter is level. 5. Snug the banding straps using a banding tool (Panduit BT1HT recommended). Follow the instructions provided with the tool by the tool manufacturer. 7 6. Connect an RF coaxial cable from either port of the external notch filter to the antenna. Connect another coaxial cable from the other port of the notch filter to the antenna port of the STM (or comparable device). See Figure 5. Note: It doesn t matter which port of the external notch filter connects to the antenna and which connects to the STM. There is no functional difference between the two configurations. 7. Install a 6 AWG ground cable from the grounding stud on the bottom of the filter to earth ground. For grounding location on the filter, refer to Figure 4 on the previous page.
