CIRCUIT/FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION Refer to Figure ( Block Diagram) as needed while reading the following brief description of the s functions. Hybrid VF signals enter and leave the channel unit through the 2-wire port. The hybrid line interface allows dc supervisory current to flow while minimizing its effect on the VF signals. Switch selected taps provide 00 Ω or 900 Ω impedance matching; an echo canceler further improves transhybrid loss balancing for mixed facilities. The hybrid converts the 2-wire input signals to 4-wire Mode= PLAR/FX, 2PLAR/ E&M Mode= PLAR/E&M, D Figure 2. The transmit attenuation allows adjustment of the 2-wire input level of +1.8 dbm to -9 dbm to the -8.5 db required at the transmit TLP (pins 1 and 7 of jack J1). The jack provides access to the output of the transmit attenuator, after the equalizer.. Transmit Equalizer The transmit equalizer provides post-equalization adjustment of the cable connected to the T&R port. Adjustment settings for equalizer performance in accordance with the WORD document. The slope compensation provided is 09D type..4 Receive Amplifier/Attenuator VF signals from the codec are passed through test jacks (pins and 9 of jack J1) to the receive amplifier/attenuator. The receive attenuator provides from 0 to 24 db of switch-selected attenuation in 0 db steps. This allows for adjustment of the 2-wire output to the required level (between -9 dbm and + dbm). The VF output is coupled through the hybrid to the 2-wire port..5 Receive Equalizer The receive equalizer performs the same equalization functions as the transmit equalizer for the receive path.. Signaling Proper signaling is provided for all functions supported..7 Automatic Loop Current Limiter Limits loop current on short loops and keeps ON and OFF HOOK impedance high, yielding excellent THL in both ON and OFF HOOK states.

Switch Option Settings 5 Mounting the Module Westell s mounts in one channel unit position of a mounting assembly. After setting the option switches per the desired application (see Parts 2 and 4, Figure 4, and Table 2), align the module with the mounting or assembly card guides above and below the module and insert it as far as it will go into the slot connector. CAUTION - STATIC-SENSITIVE This product contains static-sensitive components! Proper electrostatic discharge procedures must be followed to maintain personal and equipment safety. Do not store units near magnetic, electromagnetic or electrostatic fields. Always store or ship units in the original static-protective packaging from Westell. Use anti-static mats when working on units. 5

6 Section Rev. C - CAUTION - Use care when installing and removing modules - do not force a module into place. If a module resists insertion, remove it to check for obstructions by the connectors and mounting slots, then carefully re-align and gently re-insert module. - PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENT - Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm. Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface. Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines. This equipment is intended to be used behind devices that provide primary lightning protection. This equipment is to be installed in a restricted access location. 5.2 Making Installer Connections Installer connections for the drop-side ports of the and the RT loop are made via the connectorized cables of the AT&T channel bank assembly. The RT loop connections to the connectorized cables are made at the Main Distribution Frame using the appropriate T&R cable pairs for the mounting position of the. All other connections required by Westell s, including power, are integral to the channel bank assembly. Pin-outs for the are shown in Table. Pin/Lead Designations. ALIGNMENT Set levels and slope adjustments according to WORD document for GT type units. Alternately, the procedure for setting slope may be found in AT&T publication and transmit and receive levels by the following formulas: XMT ATTN = 8dB - loop loss + Gain of Slope Equalizer (assumes 0 db desired at digital interface) RCV ATTN = db - loop loss + Gain of Slope Equalizer - RCV level desired at PBX Gain from Slope Equalizer Slope setting Gain (db) Slope setting Gain (db) Example: Loop loss is 7 db; slope setting is yielding 0. db gain; 0 db is desired into digital interface and -4 dbm is desired level at PBX Then set XMT ATTN to 1. db = and set RCV ATTN to. db = (-4).2 For applications where non-gt units are being replaced by this unit increase the transmit attenuation by.5 db, and increase the receive attenuation by db. In addition slope settings should be set to ING & TROUBLESHOOTING 7 Testing 7 The may be used on a Sierra 41 channel unit extender (CUE) with the DATA PORT switch in the DATA PORT position. The signaling test functions of the Sierra extender will not function properly. This occurs because the uses an onboard CODEC and signaling functions take place on the PCM highway rather than the signaling highways on the backplane. 7.2 The has signaling test functions built in. Special test switches are mounted on the surface of the board requiring the to be placed on a standard CUE, such as a AT&T model J9872 ME, MF or MP CUE or equivalent, for access. See Table 4 and Figure 4 for the functions of the switches. 7. This equipment should not be field repaired. If the equipment is suspected of being faulty, replace it with another unit, optioned identically, and retest. If the replaced unit appears to operate correctly, the original unit may be faulty and should be returned to Westell for repair or replacement (Paragraph 9.2). 7.2 Troubleshooting If trouble is found, verify all installer connections and option settings, verify the modules are making a positive connection with the shelf connector. If trouble persists, replace the suspect unit and repeat procedures outlined. These procedures are not designed to effect repairs or modifications, and are intended only to ascertain proper operation of the unit and, if problems should occur, to isolate the problems to the most probable area. Tests beyond those outlined herein, or repairs made beyond replacing a faulty unit, are not recommended and may void the warranty.
