What is Sentinel? Fig. 1 Sentinel lets you see what s happening wherever you are Sentinel takes away the headache of running your own monitoring programme. We take care of everything, providing you with the high quality noise, vibration, dust, and air quality data you need to manage your operations and demonstrate compliance. We take care of the entire measurement chain, freeing you to focus on your core job of managing and/or mitigating the impact. Our Realtime Control application automatically alerts you to exceedances and warns of pending exceedances. This application allows you to view current noise levels, vibration waveforms, dust and contaminant levels and listen to audio recorded at the time of the alert, helping you to identify the cause of any noise or vibration exceedances. The results of the investigation are recorded for later reference, and all recorded data are available through standard Web browsers. Users access Sentinel from a standard connection to the Internet and can view data within a few seconds of real-time. How is Sentinel Different? Using best-in-class monitoring equipment from Brüel & Kjær and select partners, Sentinel delivers the peace of mind that your operation is being properly monitored, and provides a level of independence that regulators and communities will appreciate. Provided as a fixed-price subscription service including everything you need to provide high quality impact data, you can be certain of your monitoring costs throughout your operation. Because you are not buying the equipment, there are much lower establishment fees than if you were to purchase and operate your own instrumentation. Sentinel differs from other noise measurement systems because it is a managed service. You purchase a subscription and we provide everything you need to accurately report your compliance. Your subscription includes: Instrumentation, installation, commissioning and testing Data collection, recovery, storage and processing Report generation and distribution Ongoing fault fixing, data collection checks, preventative maintenance and calibration Instrumentation recovery and data transfer at the conclusion of your subscription The Sentinel managed service takes care of everything you need freeing you to concentrate on our core responsibilities. 4 Managing Noise in Real Time This product data details how Sentinel addresses real-time management, alerting and compliance reporting of noise. Directional noise, vibration, dust and air quality monitoring are handled similarly and explained in the relevant product data. Prior to use, Sentinel is configured with your specific compliance metrics. For example, the L Aeq must not exceed 75 db during the day and 55 db at night, and peak particle velocity level (PPV) must not exceed 15 mm/s in any axis. Once activated, Sentinel continuously monitors noise activity at each monitoring location. With a userfriendly interface, it is specifically designed to serve users of varying expertise, allowing the operator to view real-time noise levels from the Real-time Control application over the Internet. After entering a valid user name and password, the display shows a screen similar to that shown in Fig. 2. The display is designed to be used in a facility control room, a consultant s office or by construction site managers. Fig. 2 An example of a Real-time Control application display Current weather conditions Warnings (orange) and alerts (red) Monitoring terminals and measurement overview Current noise level The Real-time Control application shows the latest available data, depending on instrumentation/ communication constraints. Data is typically shown live: Noise updates every second; vibration data every minute; air quality and dust data every 5 to 15 minutes; and weather data every minute. You may customize the notification tone when the alert arrives. The screen of the Real-time Control application displays a map of the surrounding area with the monitoring locations identified. Each location is marked with a green circle, showing the current noise level to the nearest decibel. The noise level is updated twice per second. At the left of the screen, the details from each monitoring location are shown in a blue box, including the name of the location, the current noise level and details of which monitoring criteria are currently active at that location. In the example in Fig. 2, each location is being constantly monitored against a variety of noise criteria, such as peak noise level and A-weighted L eq. To that, the user can add other environmental criteria, such as exceedance of a vibration threshold of 12.6 mm/s PPV between 06:00 and 18:00 hours. Double-clicking on a blue box shows a chart with recently received data. These charts can also show the compliance limits, putting the current levels in context. 4

Fig. 3 An example of a realtime graph display The Alerting Process If any of the defined criteria are exceeded, several alert methods can be programmed to take place. In all cases, a red or an orange box will be displayed to the right of the screen, as shown in Fig.2. A red box indicates that levels have exceeded the defined criteria and will be breached if noise continues at the current levels (known as a predictive alert). Each alert is accompanied by an audible sound. In addition, Sentinel may be configured to give one or more additional notifications in the event of an alert: Issue an to a defined list of recipients. The contains details of the location, date/time and the criterion which has been exceeded Issue a text message (SMS) to designated mobile phones Activate an external audio and/or visual alarm. This may be useful in a control room or construction site trailer, where immediate action may need to be taken to address the noise alert Fig. 4 An example of an exceedance information box display Alerts remain displayed until action is taken by the operator, with further alerts being displayed in chronological order and/or grouped by location. When the operator double-clicks on a red exceedance alert, a box is displayed with additional information, as shown in Fig. 4. 5

Fig. 5 An example of a realtime graph display This box contains more information about the location, time, level causing the alert and the permitted level. Depending on the alert type, additional detailed information may be available, as follows: Noise Click Details to listen to audio recorded at the time of the alert. This is always available where noise is measured (and also other types of alerts), to aid identification Vibration Click Details to show a detailed vibration report complete with compliance chart, according to a selected compliance standard Directional Noise Click Details to show a detailed noise report complete with radar plot, indicating where noise levels have been detected (an example is shown in Fig. 5) Dust and Air Quality Click Details to show a detailed dust and air quality report complete with dust and weather recordings leading up to the alert After investigating the alert, the operator may enter details including the cause and any mitigating circumstances, such as non-standard operation or any other factors that should be recorded. The operator may select from a drop-down list of commonly used responses. In addition, the operator may Disregard Alerts so that they are indicated as not being relevant to the source operator, but instead, due to irrelevant noise from the neighbourhood, such as a barking dog. Once applied, the information about the exceedance is recorded in Sentinel. Having acknowledged the exceedance and taken action, the red Alert Box will be removed from the display. All alerts are automatically recorded in Sentinel, along with any cause or other information entered by the operator. These are included in the regular Sentinel reports on a separate alert tab (Fig. 6). Fig. 6 Alert data shown in a daily report Reporting Noise Compliance The second objective of Sentinel is to provide regular reporting, outlining compliance with regulations and reporting any exceedances over the reporting period. Sentinel is designed to take care of this automatically, without any user involvement. At regular periods (daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly, for example), Sentinel will create a report and automatically it to a designated distribution group (who do not necessarily need to access Sentinel itself). The report is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with a mixture of graphical and tabular reports, tailored to your reporting obligations. These reports include broadband and frequency spectra for shortperiod data such as 5 to 30 minute L eq, and long period data such as hourly or daily data. Noise, vibration, dust and air quality alerts are also included, where applicable. As the data are presented in Excel spreadsheets, tables and charts can be easily copied and pasted into separate reports as required, and raw data may be processed into summary metrics using the capabilities of Excel. All data are retained during the subscription period and available to the user for reference. 6

Fig. 7 An example of a Sentinel output file noise data Sentinel Client Another feature of the robust and flexible functionality of Sentinel is the Sentinel Client. This website application is designed to give the key person responsible for environmental monitoring access to all data, as well as control over configuration.the Sentinel Client Overview screen, Fig. 8, shows what is happening at a glance, with current levels, real-time history and long-term history showing hourly, daily, and monthly traces. A range of information icons show wind speed and direction. Rainfall indicators are relevant parts of the trace, and audio files are available for replay by clicking the musical note icon. The Overview screen includes everything you need to check system operation. Fig. 8 An example of a Sentinel Client Overview screen Map display and real-time display Real-time history Detail for selected location Time history The Overview screen, Fig. 9, gives access to a repository of all generated reports as well as the ability to generate custom reports. Automatically generated reports are stored here for later recall. Automatic reporting provides the most effective way to report compliance. In addition, you have full access to the vast range of information available (should this be required for investigative action or mitigation in the future). Authorized users can create custom reports over any user-defined time period and for any location. Using the Report Generator wizard is straightforward, and downloadable reports are created within seconds. 7

With the Sentinel Client Setup screen, Fig. 9, authorized users can change the settings of Sentinel in order to measure different metrics over different time periods. There is no need to be physically at the Sentinel Monitor to make changes to its measurement metrics. Furthermore, new noise monitors can be added or current monitors can be relocated to facilitate a change in location and placed into portable service. Fig. 9 Sentinel Setup panel Promoting Stakeholder Engagement Sentinel retains all setup data, including instrumentation serial numbers. The data are usually appended to each report, showing that it was set up correctly at the time of the measurement, and to provide traceable calibration information. Stakeholder Web Establishing a continuous noise monitoring programme is an important part of managing noise impact. However, the benefits may not be clearly understood unless the monitoring programme is adequately promoted to stakeholders, and information about noise levels and compliance with limits is presented in a meaningful way. The Sentinel Stakeholder Web Display is an additional service that enables a business to promote their noise monitoring programme, share compliance information and demonstrate transparency of information. It can form an effective part of stakeholder engagement and corporate social responsibility plans. 8

Fig. 10 An example of the Stakeholder Web Display Sentinel automatically feeds relevant information to a publicly accessible website that displays text, noise, weather, video and audio. The website is used to provide a public relations interface to the noise monitoring programme. It is used to promote the initiatives as well as providing a level of engagement with communities over noise issues. The website may be configured to display information such as: Real-time and historical noise levels at each noise monitoring location Weather information Images captured at monitoring locations Graphs showing noise compliance over recent periods Graphs showing anomalies and long-term trends Textual and graphical information about the business monitoring regime and objectives The display may be used interactively over the Internet in the homes of interested community members or as a stand-alone display in the public areas of corporate headquarters. Users require no training to use the intuitive tools, and because the information is transferred directly from Sentinel, they can be confident that it is correct, allowing you to demonstrate transparency. The Stakeholder Web Display is available either as free access or for specific authorized persons only. There is a high degree of configurability, enabling you to choose the most relevant data to share. Stakeholder App The Sentinel Stakeholder app is also available. It enables users and stakeholders to use Sentinel from their smartphone or tablet, making Sentinel more accessible and convenient to use for the increasing number of consultants, employees and general public who only have access to, or prefer to, use their mobile devices to access Web-based information. The app provides all your stakeholders immediate access to data relating to noise, vibration, dust and air quality so that they can monitor how your business is affecting their environment. 9

Fig. 11 The Sentinel Stakeholder app download from Google Play store. Also available from itunes App Store and Microsoft s Windows Apps store The Sentinel Stakeholder app provides standard Sentinel Stakeholder Web functionality on ios, Android and Windows mobile devices. How Does it Work? Sentinel operates using the latest cloud computing techniques. This provides a secure and scalable architecture that delivers the performance, reliability and accessibility required by our customers. Cloud computing also makes setup simple and reduces costs. One or more noise monitoring terminals (NMTs) are located at the facility being monitored. The number and location are often defined within environmental impact studies. Additionally, a system may comprise vibration monitoring terminals (VMTs) and/or dust and air quality monitoring units. Data are communicated from the monitoring units via a 3G mobile data connection to the Internet and then to Sentinel in the cloud. Sentinel performs data integrity checking, storage, processing and then formats the results into reports and presentations. Sentinel can be accessed by the user from a standard Web browser. Access is available 24 hours a day, making Sentinel usable by teams of people located in different geographical areas. Data are received in real time and presented to users with only a few seconds delay. The different elements of Sentinel are targeted at different users: Real-time Control application: For on-site technical staff who are typically tasked with monitoring a wide range of environmental, security and operational equipment Sentinel Client: Provides more detailed analysis of information for staff responsible for environmental impact analysis Stakeholder Web: Intended for corporate presentations, regulators, council officials and community members EMSOC Monitoring: The entire Sentinel process is monitored by our global monitoring services and by regional service coordinators 10

Fig. 12 Sentinel architecture Instrumentation and Configuration This multi-user, globally distributed user base is only practical with cloud-computing technologies. As each display is tailored to its particular purpose, they are highly effective and easy to use. Communication is continuous and in real-time, enabling immediate alerts. In the eventuality that communications are interrupted, noise and vibration data are stored locally and automatically transferred when communications resume. As part of any Sentinel monitoring subscription service contract, the system is setup to address your specific regulatory data monitoring and reporting requirements. If you prefer, you can also configure it yourself. As you are in complete control, the settings may be changed whenever you wish. Sentinel is available in a range of different configurations to suit your application. With monitoring solutions for noise only, vibration, dust, air quality, and weather, we can optimize your costs to deliver the data that you need. Mobile configurations are useful where noise and/or vibration monitoring needs to regularly relocate as works change, or as tunnel boring machines progress along their path. Our services can also extend to relocating the equipment for you (see below). Fig. 13 Noise Monitoring Terminal Type 3639-A Noise Monitoring Terminals (NMTs) Noise measurements are based on our proven NMTs, which continuously monitor noise at hundreds of locations around the world in a variety of applications including airports, industrial sites, mines, ports and construction sites. Equipped with an outdoor microphone, NMT Type3639-A is designed for permanent outdoor use over the course of many years, measuring noise levels in accordance with all applicable international standards. Communication to the Internet is made via the 3G wireless router, wired broadband or Wi-Fi link installed in each terminal. If the communication link breaks down for any reason, all data are recovered when the link is re-established. Data are stored locally at the terminal and continuously transferred to the Sentinel server. Local storage is crucial to avoid data loss in the eventuality of communications failure. 11

Fig. 14 Noise Monitoring Terminal Type 3655-C Portable noise monitoring is provided with Noise Monitoring Terminal Type 3655-C. This is functionally equivalent to the permanent version, but housed in a hand-carried waterproof case, suitable for monitoring periods of several months at a time. Also equipped with a 3G digital router, the portable NMT communicates noise data in real time to Sentinel for storage and analysis. Portable terminals may be relocated during the course of a measurement programme. This is a simple process that requires notifying Sentinel to stop recording at the current location, relocating the monitoring equipment and finally instructing Sentinel to continue. This can all be achieved by authorized Sentinel users over the Internet. For full details of these NMTs, see product data BP Fig. 15 The BarnOwl outdoor microphone array Directional Noise Monitoring Noise Monitoring Terminal Types 3639-A and 3655-C both use outdoor microphones with an omnidirectional characteristic, which is standard practice for outdoor noise monitoring. These microphones capture noise from all directions which, in complex multi-source environments like urban areas, can make it difficult to assess the exclusive noise contribution from the subject of interest. A directional noise monitoring device known as a BarnOwl is available for use with Sentinel. It assesses noise in one direction and can exclude noise from other directions, making it easy to focus exclusively on your noise. A full description of directional noise monitoring can be found in product data BP Fig. 16 The Vibration Monitoring Terminal Type 3680 Vibration, Dust and Air Quality Measurement Sentinel also supports continuous monitoring of ground vibration, dust levels, and air quality metrics using a wide variety of instrumentation based on application, local, and international standards compliance. A full description of ground vibration and dust/air quality monitoring can be found in product data BP 2497 and BP 2490, respectively. Fig. 17 A weather monitoring terminal Weather Monitoring Sentinel may be equipped with weather sensors that attach to the NMTs. These continuously monitor weather conditions such as wind speed and direction, temperature, pressure, humidity and rainfall. Collected simultaneously with noise data, weather data are useful in highlighting spurious alerts that may occur at high wind speeds, and they are automatically discounted from compliance metrics. Other conditions such as high rainfall can cause increased noise levels and spurious vibration alerts. Weather data are reported alongside noise and vibration data to provide a complete picture of the conditions on site. 12

Fig. 18 A solar-powered monitoring terminal Alternative Power Supply Running cables for power and communications to monitoring equipment around a construction site or industrial facility can be dangerous and unreliable. In suitable locations, stand-alone equipment may be provided, operating from solar panels and batteries. When coupled with mobile communications, this provides the best approach to ensure wire-free continuous monitoring around the site. Preventative Maintenance and Calibration Sentinel Services Both noise and vibration monitoring equipment must be calibrated every 12 months, with dust and air quality monitoring equipment typically requiring more frequent attention. Sentinel may be accompanied by an adjustable tailored preventative maintenance and calibration programme (depending on what is being monitored, and to which standards). Brüel & Kjær staff or agents attend each monitoring location annually or bimonthly to undertake a range of checks and actions designed to ensure correct operation for the next period. In accordance with international standards and best practice, equipment will be field calibrated where practical and swapped out for laboratory calibration where not. In order to maintain operation, additional instrumentation is provided while units are laboratory calibrated. All calibrations are traceable to international standards. Sentinel is usually provided as a fully managed service, as in most cases this enables us to provide you with the highest level of service. In some circumstances, such as when you have your own on-site personnel, it may be appropriate to remove some services that are not required or add additional services where they make sense. Sentinel can be tailored to your individual needs. Please contact Brüel & Kjær for more details.
