Pillars (require on-site configuration) These back to back units are ideal for conveying services straight from ceiling and underfloor voids. They can be configured to use the longest side against walls to keep a low and unobtrusive profile whilst offering increased socket density. Pillars are easily customisable on-site. High configuration 104mm (h) x 90mm (d) This configuration maximises the useful worktop area and is the recommended default orientation when continuous lengths of trunking are installed against a back wall and on top of a working surface. It is also recommended when back to back lengths are to be used. Low configuration 90mm (h) x 104mm (d) This orientation is recommended when available space above the worktop is limited i.e. under a window frame. Not recommended for back to back applications as the footprint size will take up a larger surface area. Twin configuration 104mm (h) x 180mm (d) Suitable for power distribution across middle of worktops. It can easily connect to standard perimeter trunking, bench trunking or underfloor systems. This configuration can also be used on island locations allowing on-site customised lengths. Pods available as standard items These are standalone preassembled units for fixing directly to the working surface and ideally suited for island locations. For island locations where the back of the Pod is not against a wall a purpose made blank can be fitted to improve the aesthetic appearance of the rear surface. Single Pods Single pods with 1 or 2 gang outlets can be placed with the longest side horizontally to improve stability, or the shorter side horizontally to reduce the footprint. Non-standard Pods Pods can be made to exact customer requirements for numbers of sockets, Part M compliance etc. Specials may also be configured to negotiate corners, if required, with asymmetric leg lengths possible. Special adaptors can be manufactured to allow direct connection between desk-mounted Bench Trunking and perimeter dado trunking for speedy installation onsite. Desktop Columns Versatile units perfectly suited for situations where a high outlet density is required in a single feeding point i.e. conference rooms or ITC suites. 12 Socket Column: For installation on desks and worktops, the standard 12 outlet column provides the most compact option. these units can be fitted with Contrasting Socket Modules for Part M compliance. Custom Columns: Custom made units for fewer or more outlets can be supplied to exact customer requirements. 20 2.6 Adjustable Socket Boxes Data and Bench Trunking The demand for power and data outlets in public and private buildings is increasing as new bandwidth hungry applications are being quickly incorporated into different aspects of our daily lives. With the advent of new technologies heavily relying on telecommunication and electrical installations, cables and outlets are becoming more sophisticated and the correct installation has never been so critical. Data cable manufacturers continuously have more stringent installation requirements and in most cases these are mandatory to warranty channel performance. This is why REHAU, aware of the importance of these issues, has developed an innovative adjustable socket box design that complies with the strictest requirements of the top 10 data cable manufacturers. The new design can safely house a variety of CAT 6, 6A and even CAT 7 modules thanks to its generous depth range from 38 to 50mm (depending on trunking type). Other features include: - Location of cable exit knock-outs corresponds to the geometry of most common telecommunication modules up and down - Straight - 90 up and down - Sideways Double Socket Adjustable - Concave back wall, which eliminates right angles and corners. This will facilitate feeding back any remaining extra cable out of the box and into the trunking without dragging in internal corners. The feature will also avoid sharp bending and damage to the external sheathing of the cable as well as helping maintain the required Minimum Bend Radius. 22 2.8 Antimicrobial Trunking For the study, the classroom was equipped with a range of products protected with BioCote antimicrobial technology. These included: Decorative Panels computer desks, Proform chairs, Salto door handles, Electrium light switches, Deb soap dispensers, Rehau cable trunking, Electrium sockets, Proform and Decorative Panels tables and bookcases, Gratnells storage trays and units, Highgrade carpets, Contour Casings radiator covers, Miele window handles, HMG Paints paint, BioClad wall cladding and a Waterlogic water dispenser. All items were provided by BioCote customers to create a safer, more hygienic learning environment. Levels of bacteria on the items of interest were measured over a period of time. Simultaneously, data was collected from comparable but untreated items in another classroom. Comparison of the levels of bacteria in these two classrooms revealed a dramatic difference. Initial findings were impressive; the antimicrobial products in the protected classroom were shown to be over 95.68% less contaminated with bacteria than the corresponding items in the unprotected classroom. Designed specifically to help reduce micro-organisms which may cause harmful infections and diseases in environments such as hospitals and schools, REHAU s cable trunking can incorporate BioCote s silver-ion antimicrobial technology which reduces the occurrence of micro organisms and inhibits the growth of both bacteria and mould. Tests carried out by the supplier of the technology, BioCote, have previously shown that products incorporating the ionic silver at the time of manufacture, typically help reduce levels of bacteria including MRSA, E-coli, Salmonella and Listeria, on surfaces by up to 99%. The world s first ever antimicrobial classroom has been created at a Primary school in the UK, resulting in huge reductions in levels of bacteria. BioCote Ltd, a leader in the field of antimicrobial technology, worked in conjunction with users of its technology to create the world s first ever classroom that actively inhibits the growth of potentially harmful microbes. Technical Director and microbiologist at BioCote Dr Richard Hastings said: We are very proud to be part of the world s first antimicrobial classroom. We were keen to undertake the study in a school environment due to the close-contact nature of children in the school classroom - providing the perfect setting for potentially harmful bacteria to spread. We are happy to announce huge bacterial reductions on BioCote treated products, affirming our aim of a cleaner classroom for young children. Government guidelines recommend schools prevent the spread of infections by maintaining a clean environment. BioCote treated products work effectively with standard cleaning practices, making for an even higher level of cleanliness. The study will continue throughout the academic year and further data will be collected. The BioCote team are keen to understand if levels of contamination vary due to seasonality, the identity of microbes recovered and what potential antimicrobial technology has for reducing absenteeism due to sickness. REHAU s new antimicrobial trunking provides an additional level of protection against microbial organisms, which can also cause product deterioration, discolouration and bad odours. 22

Case Study Proven Reduction InBacteria In A School Environment School classrooms present the classic factors important for the efficient spread of microbes; close contact of people for prolonged periods, numerous commonly touched, communal surfaces and isolated cleaning. Hygiene in these environments is, therefore, important in order to reduce the risk and consequences of microbial cross contamination. Inevitably, good hygiene guidance for education providers from government1 includes regular, thorough environmental cleaning. However, developments in antimicrobial technology now offer the ability to create indoor environments composed of materials that act continuously by reducing the presence of microbes contaminating them. The rationale for hygienic classrooms is obvious. Does the application of antimicrobial technology to a classroom have a beneficial impact? Study Aim To measure and compare the numbers of bacteria in two classrooms in the same primary school after antimicrobial technology has been extensively applied to one whilst the second is unchanged. Method In the autumn of 2014, a medium-sized UK primary school was selected as suitable for the purposes of this environmental study. A classroom was refurbished computer desks, chairs, door handles, light switches, liquid soap dispensers, cable trunking, sockets, tables, storage trays, bookcases, storage units, castors, carpet, radiator covers, window handles, wall and ceiling paint, PVC wall cladding and a drinking water dispenser all treated with BioCote antimicrobial technology. Products were donated for the purpose of this study by BioCote Ltd Partners. A second classroom was included in this study to serve as a control environment. The demographics of both classrooms was suitably comparable. Both classrooms were used and cleaned as normal. Typical daily cleaning of school classroom involves the wiping of sinks, draining board and table tops, sweeping the hard floor and vacuuming carpet. In addition, a weekly clean involved dusting of computers, shelves and worktops and mopping of non-absorbent floors. A weekly collection of swab samples began in November and extended for three weeks. Antimicrobial products were swabbed from the antimicrobial classroom whilst corresponding, untreated products and surfaces in the control classroom were swabbed at the same time. Swabs were collected before and after the school day and processed appropriately in the microbiology laboratory to isolate, count and where possible, identify bacteria (data not shown here) recovered from the study classrooms. Results Total environment. The difference in total bacterial counts between the classrooms: 95.68%. A comparison of the average number of bacteria recovered from all BioCote treated products with all corresponding products in the control classroom revealed almost 96% less bacterial contamination in the antimicrobial classroom. Product-Type. The difference in average numbers of bacteria recovered from the various products of each classroom varied from 30.3% to >99.99% (Table 1). Table 1: Differences in average colony counts per product in the treated and untreated classroom Table 1: BioCote treated products within the study Treated Product Manufacturer Difference in average colony count Computer Desk Decorative Panels 92.65% Computer Desk Chair Proform 79.90% Sink Splash Back BioClad 99.73% Soap Dispenser Deb 96.26% Door Handle Salto 98.58% Cable Trunking Rehau 99.90% Socket Electrium 86.24% Desk Table Proform/Decorative Panels 87.23% Desk Chair Proform 97.12% Desk Tray Gratnells 52.38% Storage Tray Gratnells 97.22% Storage Tray Rack Gratnells 91.90% Storage Tray Rack Castor Gratnells/Guy-Raymond 85.84% Bookcase Decorative Panels/Proform 97.43% Carpet Highgrade 70.09% Light Switch Electrium 30.30% Radiator Covers Contour Casings 90.54% Window Handles Miele 34.78% Painted Surfaces HMG 91.30% Wall Cladding BioClad >99.99% Water Dispenser Waterlogic 96.79% Discussion The two classrooms studied were chosen due to their similarities in use, location and demographics. From this basis, the difference between the two classrooms was the presence of antimicrobial technology. It is reasonable to view the reduced counts of bacteria on the antimicrobial products, comparted to the control classroom s counterparts, is a direct result of those products continued antimicrobial performance. Before release into the market, products treated with BioCote technology are validated for acceptably high antimicrobial efficacy. In theory, then, reduced counts of bacteria contaminating BioCote treated products deployed in working environments, compared to equivalent but untreated products should be expected. Previous environmental studies measuring bacterial counts on antimicrobial surfaces also reported them to be less contaminated than untreated counterparts 2,3. Antimicrobial technology should not be viewed as a replacement to cleaning. However, the repeated observation of considerably fewer bacteria present on antimicrobial products, regardless of product type and when the observation was made, compared to those counts made from the control classroom, presents a compelling case for the application of antimicrobial technology to hygiene-critical environments. 24 2.9 Fire-Resistant Cable Retention Brackets for PVC Trunking BS 7671 Amendment 3: 2015 includes the requirement that wiring systems in escape routes shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire. This precludes the use of non-metallic cable clips, cable-ties or Cable Trunking as the sole means of cable support. In other word, where non-metallic Cable Trunking is used an additional fire-resistant means of support and retention must be provided to prevent cables falling out in the event of a fire. Whilst non-metallic trunking is not normally used in escape routes, other areas (e.g. trunking close to doorways etc) may be considered by a client to require similar protection. Furthermore, for installations in educational and health establishments, or where there may be mobility issues, it may be considered by the client that this higher level of safety is desirable. REHAU have therefore developed a range of stainless steel Brackets designed to be fitted at intervals inside REHAU Trunking. When fitted with stainless steel cable-ties these Brackets provide the required fireresistant cable support wherever this may be deemed necessary. Installation of the Brackets is quick and straightforward simply utilising the Trunking fixing screws. This means that Brackets may also easily be retro-fitted. Brackets click-fit into position, which avoids having to hold the bracket in place whilst the fixing-screw is fitted. Brackets accept stainless steel cable-ties to secure the cables in place in the event that a fire compromises the support offered by the Cable Trunking. Effective 1 July 2015, an amendment to BS7671 Wiring Regulations for the UK and Ireland has had an impact on some installations of nonmetallic Cable Management Trunking. It has been recognised that in the event of a fire, non-metallic cable trunking, or other non-metallic means of support, can fail when subject to either direct flame or hot products of combustion. This may lead to wiring systems hanging across access or egress routes such that they hinder evacuation and fire-fighting activities. Fire-resistant brackets are currently available both for the REHAU COMPACT Data and the REHAU PROFILA Data Cable Management Systems. BS 7671 specifies safety requirements both for power and data cables. Therefore Fire-Resistant Cable Retention Brackets, when used, must be incorporated into all pathways in which cables will be run. For this reason, REHAU supply brackets in pairs to match the trunking being installed. 24

3.3 PROFILA 2 & PROFILA 3 Installation Instructions Installation at skirting level Installation To ensure a safe installation, this product must be installed and maintained by a competent person in accordance with requirements of the 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). PROFILA 3 PROFILA 2 Base Mounting The PROFILA 3 and PROFILA 2 bases are supplied with prepunched fixing slots. These are 6.5 x 12mm and conveniently spaced every 100mm. When installing cable management at skirting level ensure at least 6mm gap for fitting of floor covering. Additionally, the location of sockets must be carefully considered. Generally it is not acceptable to install sockets into a compartment which is directly adjacent to the floor as the cable bending radius will prevent plugs being fitted. This applies to PROFILA 3 Sets E and F and PROFILA 2. Use of Extension Piece Extension pieces may be fitted to either side of the PROFILA 3 base or top of PROFILA 2 to increase cable capacity. The integral cable shelf on PROFILA 3 can easily be removed by snapping off along the notch provided. No.8 Round Head Screw + Washer 100mm Accessory Box Installation Accessory boxes clip directly into the base, and should be located before fitting covers. Box Spacer 5mm Expansion gap Cover Cable Shelf Base mounting 6mm Floor gap Use of No.10 round head screws and washers, or hammer wall fixings is recommended. Over tightening of fixings must be avoided to prevent damage to the base and allow for thermal expansion. Box installation Cover profiles overlap lugs on the accessory boxes, and the joint line is concealed by the accessory faceplate. Cover spacers should be used where boxes are positioned adjacent to each other. Leave a 5mm gap between lengths of base to allow for thermal expansion. When using the integral cable shelf, the base must be mounted with the shelf at the bottom. 26

Cover Fitting and Removal PROFILA 3 covers are intended to clip into the base and provide a high degree of security and protection to the cabling inside. The covers are designed to be removed by gripping the cover close to one of the clips, and peeling perpendicular to the plane of the wall. This is repeated for the other clip, before peeling along the cover length. Covers should always be fitted, and removed by working from an end. The appearance of a joint is improved if the joint covers are vertically aligned. Moulded accessories provide a 6mm overlap with the covers to allow for variations in cutting. Use of Standard mouldings is only possible with columns greater than 150mm deep x 60mm width. The integrity of an installation is increased when the base and cover joints are offset. Protective foils should only be removed on completion of the installation. Moulded internal corner Minimum column depth150mm 5mm Expansion gap Off set Moulded external corner Prefabricated Fittings Pre-fabricated Tee pieces and flat angles are available. Base + Cover joints Fitting Moulded Accessories Joint covers / End caps / Column set (Internal / External corners). All moulded accessories mount directly on to the trunking base. A gap of 10mm should be left between cover lengths to allow fitting of joint covers. 10mm Gap Their use is recommended where moulded accessories are not used. They ensure continuity of cable segregation, and allow offsetting of base / cover joints. Joint covers are not supplied with fabricated fittings. Pre-fabricated column sets are available to special order. Bridge Piece A bridge piece should be used where it is necessary to cross the main compartment and maintain cable segregation. 10mm diameter holes should be drilled in the compartment sidewalls to allow feeding of cables. RCD Housing RCD s can be mounted in the main compartment using a RCD housing set. Fitting joint covers Joint Covers Sets compromise a pre-fabricated housing section, and a RCD mounting bracket. Cable Retainers Cable retainers are available for main and top compartments. The top retainer is fixed using a self-adhesive pad. Both types allow cables to be easily added and removed. 27

3.5 MAX Commercial Trunking System Installation Instructions Installation Shelf overlap Base joint To ensure a safe installation, this product must be installed and maintained by a competent person in accordance with requirements of the 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). To ensure a safe installation, this product must be installed and maintained by a competent person in accordance with requirements of the 16th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). Base Mounting All REHAU MAX base profiles are supplied with pre-punched fixing slots. These are 6.5 x 12mm and conveniently spaced every 100mm. Use of No.10 round head screws and washers, or hammer wall fixings is recommended. Fitting of shelf Cable shelf Cable retainers should be used in conjunction with the shelves to improve support. (See Cable Retainers section below). Shelf removal is easiest using a flat bladed screwdriver. The screwdriver blade should be inserted into the outer U feature of the shelf foot at the end of the length. The shelf can then be released by using the screwdriver to lever the clip open. Once the end of the clip has been released, the shelf can be removed with a peeling action. 100mm Base mounting No.10 Round head screw + washer Remove shelf Over tightening of fixings must be avoided to prevent damage to the base. Adjacent lengths of trunking should be butted against each other. For applications where joining of base lengths is required self-adhesive couplers are available separately. Use of Cable Shelf Shelves may be quickly fitted to MAX base profiles (only depth trunking), to allow segregation of cabling. The number of DIN rails present in the base determines the number of shelves that can be fitted to a length of MAX trunking. See Product Section for details. Cables shelves clip over the DIN rail feature, which is present in the trunking base. When fitting, ensure that the return lip on the shelf is facing upwards. Note that the integrity of a base joint is greatly improved by ensuring the shelf bridges it. 29

Accessory Box Installation. (Only MAX 100/50) Accessory boxes clip directly into the base, and should be located prior to fitting covers. Cover Fitting And Removal Once fitted MAX covers are intended to provide a high degree of security and protection to the cabling inside. This is especially important for installations where cabling is to be installed across a ceiling. Removal of covers is easiest using a flat blade screwdriver. The screwdriver blade should be carefully inserted between the inside edge of the cover and the clip on the base. Cover Spacer Box The screwdriver should then be twisted to prize open the clip, allowing the cover to be released. This is repeated for the clip on the other side, before peeling off the cover length. Covers should always be fitted, and removed by working from an end. Box installation The covers are intended to overlap the accessory box to improve integrity of the installation. For instances where boxes are positioned adjacent to each other cover spaces should be used. Cable Retainers (Only available for 100/50 & 100/100) Cable retainers clip directly into the base. The integrity of an installation can be greatly improved by ensuring that joints between base sections are offset from joints between covers. The MAX 100/50 is supplied with protective foils on the base and cover. These should only be removed on completion of the installation. Moulded Accessories End cap and corner mouldings clip directly on to the MAX trunking, and provide a 6mm overlap to compensate for variation in cutting of the covers. Fitting Cable retainers Cable retainer Internal / External Corners Corner mouldings are available for the following sizes- 50/50, 75/70, 75/75 & 100/50. When installing on columns ensure there is sufficient room to allow fitting of the mouldings. Moulded fittings may only be used where the column is greater than 120mm deep (for 50mm deep mouldings or 145mm for 75mm deep mouldings). In addition to restricting movement of cabling, the retainers also provide support for the cable shelf. This is particularly important where the weight of cabling is higher. Moulded internal corner Minimum column depth 120mm Fitting of retainers at maximum 500mm intervals is recommended to provide proper support to the shelf. Unclipping one side of a retainer will permit rotation, thereby allowing cables to be added or removed without detaching the retainer or releasing other cables from the trunking. Support limbs should be removed from the retainer if shelves are not used. A notch is provided to aid this. Moulded external corner Moulded corners 30

Joint Cover Moulded joint covers are only available for the 100/50 size. A gap of 10mm should be left between cover lengths to allow fitting of joint covers. The sets comprise a pre-fabricated housing section, and a DIN rail mounting bracket. General Notes: Before removing covers or undertaking any maintenance to a trunking installation, the mains electricity supply MUST be turned OFF. When installing a single length of trunking between two walls it is advisable to locate a joint at the centre to allow easier access to cabling. Cutting of base and covers should be undertaken with a fine toothed saw and finished with a sharp knife. For cleaning of MAX trunking use Standard PVC cleaner. Abrasive materials must not be used as these will damage the surface finish. 31
