1 TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT MANUAL COMMUNICATIONS COMPONENTS g RELM KNG P150-CMD PORTABLE RADIO EFFECTIVE: FEBRUARY 2016 PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to familiarize members with the components, features, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Relm KNG P150-CMD portable radio. APPLICATION The Relm KNG P150-CMD is a handheld portable radio used by the Fresno Fire Department. The Relm KNG P150-CMD is used for both emergency and nonemergency radio communications in all types of environments. It is imperative all members are intimately familiar with the components, features, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of this radio as it becomes a firefighter s lifeline at an emergency scene. The Relm KNG P150-CMD is a two-way radio, which transmits and receives on VHF between 136 MHz and 174 MHz frequency band. Up to 2048 channels can be programmed into the radio divided into operating zones. Zones can be designated as standard operating zones or command zones. Command zones are made up of channels selected from standard operating zones. VOTE SCAN The KNG radios have been equipped with vote scan functionality to improve on-scene communications. Vote scan functions by scanning multiple frequencies for the clearest signal, and then broadcasts the transmission. The KNG radios have been programmed with (4) four vote scan enabled channels: 1. 2 The vote scan function scans the transmit and receive frequencies of the above mentioned channels. Vote Scan will improve on-scene communications by broadcasting the clearest signals from transmitting radios. It does this by scanning transmit and receive frequencies of a duplex channel, and broadcasting the strongest of the signals. BATTERY INFORMATION Note: For safety reasons, rechargeable battery packs are shipped uncharged or only partially charged; therefore, a rechargeable battery pack should be properly charged in an approved battery charger before use. Radio should not be left on in the charger to prevent battery damage. Only RELM Wireless approved batteries should be used to ensure proper operation and specifications. Models with KZA0558, intrinsically safe certification, must use a KAA0100IS battery to meet certification requirements. Page 2 of 9

3 INSTALLING THE BATTERY 1. Turn the radio off. 2. Align the tabs on the bottom of the battery with the slots on the radio. 3. Push the top of the battery toward the radio until release tab clicks into place. REMOVING THE BATTERY 1. Slide the release tab toward the bottom of the radio. 2. Pull the top of the battery out. 3. Pull up to remove the battery pack. Note: All information programmed into the radio is maintained even when the battery pack is removed. RADIO CONTROLS Page 3 of 9

4 BUTTON ASSIGNMENTS Collar Switch: This is assigned to activate the Control Lock function. To enable Control Lock function, the collar must be pointed directly in the 12 o clock position. To disable the Control Lock feature, the collar must be turned 15 degrees counterclockwise. Orange Button: The orange button is assigned the Home Channel. Selecting the orange button will change the channel to a pre-designated channel (Metro/Rural). Holding down the button for three or more seconds will re-assign the pre-designated assignment to whichever channel is currently selected. (Operator shall leave HC as designated.) Left Toggle: This is assigned to enable and disable the Scan function. To enable the Scan function, the left toggle needs to be pulled toward the front of the radio (the front of the radio would be the screen side). If the toggle is selected back (towards the back of the radio), the Scan function is disabled. When enabled, the screen will display that Scan feature is on; as well as disabling, it will display the feature is off. See the diagram on the previous page for reference. Right Toggle: This is assigned as Priority Scan. To enable the Priority Scan function the left toggle needs to be pulled toward the front of the radio (the front of the radio would be the screen side). If the toggle is selected back (towards the back of the radio), the Priority Scan function is disabled. When enabling, the screen will display that Priority Scan feature is on; as well as disabling, it will display the feature is off. See the diagram on the previous page for reference. Priority Scan: Two channels can be designated as Priority channels. When Priority Scan is on, these channels are monitored for incoming traffic. If a message is detected on the channel designated as Priority 2, the radio will continue to monitor Priority 1 channel for activity. If activity is detected, the radio will switch to the Priority 1 channel. When used in conjunction with Channel Scan, the radio monitors the Priority channels and will switch from a scanned channel to the Priority channel if a qualified signal is detected. Top Side Button: This button is assigned as the Nuisance Channel Delete. To temporarily remove a channel from the scan list, press the assigned button while the nuisance channel is being received. To revert to the programmed scan list, turn off Scan for at least 5 seconds or cycle the radio power. Bottom Side Button: This button is assigned as the Backlight. The backlight can be turned on and off by pressing the bottom side button. When turned on, the backlight will come on at any transmission as well as when a button has been selected. Page 4 of 9

5 MENU (SQUARE): When selected, the screen will show the following: 1. Priority Channel Under this menu are the following options: a. System P1 Chan: Uses the selected channel as the Priority 1 channel scanned regardless of what zone you are in while in normal operating mode and scanning. b. System P2 Chan: Uses the selected channel as the Priority 2 channel scanned regardless of what zone you are in while in normal operating mode and scanning. c. Zone 1 P1 Chan: Uses the selected channel as the Priority 1 channel scanned only while in its own zone. The zone number will be displayed as the zone for the Priority channel you selected. d. Zone 2 P2 Chan: Uses the selected channel as the Priority 2 channel scanned only while in its own zone. The zone number will be displayed as the zone for the Priority channel you selected. Scroll up/down to desired selection and press [ENT]. On all four choices above, you will have three options: OFF: Disables the Priority channel. USE MAIN: Priority channel is the channel displayed. SELECT: When selected, it will ask you what Zone and Channel you want to assign as Priority 1 or Channel Scan List When selected, this allows you to ADD or DELETE channels in the scan list per zone. To add a channel into scan, press [+/-] for every channel you would like to scan. Those channels will then be added and a checkmark will be placed in the box next to that channel. To DELETE the channel from the scan list, press [+/-] button again and the channel will be taken out of the scan list and the checkmark disappears. Press up or down arrows to move to a new channel. Note: In between the ADDing a channel and DELETEing a channel a (V) will appear. This (V) indicates the channel selected is in a vote scan mode. Page 5 of 9

6 3. Talkaround [T/A] Conventional Channels In Repeater Talkaround mode, the radio will transmit on the programmed receive frequency of the selected channel. When T/A is enabled the icon will be displayed on the top line of the LCD. Note: The Talkaround mode is a temporary mode. When another channel is selected, zone is changed or Radio power cycled off, the talkaround mode will be disabled and become a repeated channel again. 4. Monitor Mode In Monitor mode, any Receive Tone assigned to a channel can be overridden or turned off so the radio will receive that channel regardless if there is a Tone on the receive side of the channel. Example: If CALFIRE TAC Nets have a Tone on transmit and receive side of the channel and someone in your Strike Team doesn t have the correct Tone programmed into their radio, you can turn on the Monitor mode and hear all traffic on that channel regardless of the tone. This feature is more likely to be used out of county. There are three options of Monitor: OFF: This is the normal operation of the radio. Leave the Monitor mode normally off. ON: Use this if you want to turn Monitor ON so you can monitor that channel regardless of the tone assigned. OPEN: This is not normally used. If you do select this option, the radio squelch will open. 5. Squelch Adjust You can adjust the squelch of the radio by selecting this menu option. When selected, you will have two options: Adjust Chan Squelch: Using the [+ or -] buttons and then press [ENT]. You must first go into the menu and turn on MON (Monitor Mode) then go back to Adjust the Squelch then turn MON off again. Reset Squelch: Reset the squelch to factory settings. Page 6 of 9

7 6. Contrast When this feature is selected you will have two options: Adjust Contrast: Selecting this option will allow you to adjust the display contrast by pressing either [+ or -]. Default: Selecting the default will bring the contrast back to factory settings. 7. Cloning This feature allows cloning of the radio, whether your radio receives a clone or clones another radio. This will be added later in another section of this policy. 8. Versions When selected, shows what version of the radio is installed. 9. Radio Info This gives specific information concerning each radio 10. Keypad Programming This allows you to program the radio by manual operation from the keypad and will be added later. ZONE (ARROW DOWN): When this button is pressed, all the zones in the radio are shown starting at the top. There are two ways to get to a zone scroll down using the down arrow or scroll up using the up arrow; or if you know the zone you want, you can enter that number on the keypad and press [ENT]. See the table on the last page for Zone Assignments. TXCG (ARROW UP): TXCG is Transmit Tone Channel Guard. Transmit tone selection for different repeaters. Standard California Tones 1-32 are available from this screen. There are two ways to access a tone -- scroll down or up using the up/down buttons and then stop on the tone desired then press [ENT]; or press the number of the tone you want to use then [ENT]. Example: If you want tone 5, press 5 then [ENT] and you will go to that tone directly. Note: If you happen to be on a channel that already has a tone programmed into that channel, you will hear a beep and the words Pick List Selection Not Allowed will be displayed. This means the channel already has a tone programmed into that frequency. Page 7 of 9

8 CHAN + (DIAMOND): This button allows any channel to be added to the Command Zone. This button allows for the adding or deleting of channels into any Command Zone. Building a Command Zone [Chan +]: To build a Command Zone, select the channel from anywhere in the radio that you want to add to a Command Zone and press the [Chan+] button. A list of available Command Zones will be displayed. Use the up/down arrow key to select the Zone; press [ENT]. This will put the channel in the first available slot within that Command Zone and display what channel number it will become. Select [ENT] again to confirm -- Channel Added will momentarily display. Note: Channels will be in the order as they were added. Zones 3-6 are designated as Command Zones. Zones are designated as Incident Cloning Zones. Editing a Command Zone [Chan-]: This can only be done when operation in a Command Zone. While operating in a Command Zone you may remove channels by pressing the [Chan-] button to remove the selected channel from the Zone. When the channel is deleted, the display will momentarily show Channel Deleted and the following channels move up in the list. Example: If Channel 5 is deleted, then Channel 6 will move up and become the new Channel 6 and Channel 7 becomes 6, and so on. To delete all channels from a Command Zone, press and hold [CHAN-] button until the words Delete All Channels? appear and then press [ENT]. All channels from that Command Zone will be erased and a constant tone will be heard, meaning that Command Zone is empty. Note: Modification to a Command Zone Channel, such as OST, does not affect the original standard zone channel. Page 8 of 9
