2 December January Volume LIII, Number 1 Prez Sez... First and foremost thank you to every member, friend, visitor and college staff, for making this one of the best years in our history. The things that we accomplished this year were very nice indeed. Thank you to all of our membership who continually engage in contesting and communicating, adding to the club roster and the club scores. Also, to those who are always adding to the overall knowledge to everyone outside of WPRC, sharing with them who we are and where we reside as a club. This has been a great help for people to find out more about us. We had our first ARRL Field Day this year at the college and it was a great event and it was also accepted and sanctioned by the college to take place at the Western Campus. This is no small feat. They were also very pleased on our numbers, the fact that it was an emergency preparedness event, and how well we handled ourselves and cleaned up afterwards. To all of those who participated, you should all feel very nicely that you were a part of this event at West this year. Hopefully many more to come in the years that follow. We had some small things as well, the banner for the club which can be used at any event in the future and may also be used by any member of the club as long as it is returned as soon as their event is finished as possible so that the next person may use it. It will give us many years of service in the future to advertise our club when we are setup is different places. To share the great hobby of Amateur Radio. Christmas is almost upon us, and, now is the time to get ready for Field Day 2018! All kidding aside we will talk about FD soon, I promise. But now is the time to join with family and friends and bring in the only season that I believe has true meaning for our entire world. It is the only time of year where mankind feels differently about themselves and each other. What other season can be ushered in by the birth of the baby Jesus and offer the kindness that we see this time of year. Is there hatred in the world, sadly of course, but this season shows more of gladness and the affects of Joy, and Mercy on mankind that we all need, and so desperately this year and at this time. How ever you celebrate the Christmas Season remember that you are all loved each and every one of you. Remember to give unconditionally and you will receive the same in kind. I appreciate and consider each of you a friend and a mentor in my journey through life. May you all be very blessed!! Stephen, N8WB, 73 my friends! WEST PARK PUBLIC SERVICE For many years West Park Radiops volunteers have helped LCAC volunteers sort and deliver articles to the needy. As an ARRL Special Service Club, our members assist in this activity every year. Our next LCAC opportunity will be on Decmeber 16. We can also support other activities on short notice. In general, radio net activity provide virtual public service practice and keeps our radios in tested operation and weeds out problems. RECENT NETS & TALK Club nets have switched over to only using (107.2 PL). Many interesting discussions occur and often with no prior planning. However, you must have a clear shot at the repeater's receiving antenna to use an HT. Please consider your 2m antenna systems and how they perform for the net. We are on at 9 p.m. local Mondays. FUTURE PROGRAMS... The following topics are on the new list for programs: openspot, SharkRF, Dxpeditions, Propagation, FT8 and WSPR modes. PARITY ACT... Status Report: The Amateur Radio Parity Act of /28/2017 (from ARRL Internet news) The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2017 S. 1534is alive, but with legislative action slowed to a glacial pace on Capitol Hill in recent months, there s been no real progress to report since this past summer. At present, the bill is under consideration by the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and it remains an active concern for ARRL. The League is working diligently to shake the bill loose and move it forward. While it may appear that time is short, S does not need to pass the Senate by this years end. We have until the current session of Congress adjourns, which is not until December 31, Once the bill passes both Houses, the FCC would still have to implement its essence in the Part 97 Amateur Service rules. Introduced on July 12, 2017, S marked another step forward for the landmark legislation. Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) sponsored the bill in the Senate. The US House version of the legislation, HR 555, passed the House of Representatives by unanimous consent in January 2017.

3 December January Volume LIII, Number 1 PART 97 REMINDERS... (per FCC Web pages) U.S. radio amateurs should take note of the following details when connecting their equipment to run RTTY signals (LSB) or the new modern digital modes such as FT8 and JT65 (USB) in the CW subbands. This one requires that no phone emissions occur in the data subbands. Please note that (3) and (9) (below) requires that the amateur not make either of two mistakes: (a) If the radio does not block microphone input when the VFO frequency is in the CW subband and mode is LSB or USB, the operator must somehow disconnect the microphone s voice signal leads so as not to allow background sounds in the operating area to mix with the data tones. (b) Technicians are not allowed to use RTTY or the modern digital modes, but only CW. Part (3) Only a RTTY or data emission using a specified digital code listed in (a) of this part may be transmitted. The symbol rate must not exceed 300 bauds, or for frequency-shift keying, the frequency shift between mark and space must not exceed 1 khz. (9) A station having a control operator holding a Novice or Technician Class operator license may only transmit a CW emission using the international Morse code. This one requires that while the operator is on the air on a phone subband, the operator s microphone shall not be sensitive to (repeat) background sounds such as from television or non-amateur radio, including music, sports games, and WWV on another radio, to name a few possibilities. Hint: I think this could cause scrutiny if a CB, FRS, GMRS, police or other special radio including cell phone is being heard in the background on an amateur radio phone emission. This affects legitimate emergency operation command centers. Part (c): (c) No station shall retransmit programs or signals emanating from any type of radio station other than an amateur station, except propagation and weather forecast information intended for use by the general public and originated from United States Government stations, and communications, including incidental music, originating on United States Government frequencies between a manned spacecraft and its associated Earth stations. NET NEUTRALITY Staying out of the political fracas here, it s still worthwhile to mention that the FCC rules on keeping Internet net neutrality may be canceled in mid-december. It will be interesting. TWO FACTOR LOGIN If you use a computer on the Internet you have learned how to log in to any number of Web sites. (From Wikipedia) Authentication is the act of confirming the truth of an attribute of a single piece of data (a datum) claimed true by an entity. Out of different types of authentication twofactor authentication is a method that provides identification of users by means of the combination of two different components. There are number of twofactor authentication and multi-factor authentication methods. Multi-factor authentication products can provide significant benefits to an enterprise, but the methods are complex and the tools themselves can vary greatly from provider to provider. This newsletter will not announce the names of the vendors of hardware fobs or other means to effect the second part of two-factor authentication. [That s because it looks like advertising.] It seems that most people doing computer logins do not take advantage of the increased security available with hardware that assists two-factor logins. In many cases recently seen, Web pages the provide access to sensitive data, such as medical or bank records, or even QRZ.COM, have changed their login procedures. They may request that authentication involve passwords be entered on a separate Web page than the login ID, or to request that the user/customer click on some graphical arrays in order to prove they are not an Internet robot. CONTESTERS: UPDATE YOUR MASTER DATA If you use a computer to do QSO logging during contests, you need to keep your master.dta files updated. I have confirmed via that bad and Silent Key call signs have been removed from the latest databases. < >

RADIO IN YOUR CAR?... ( from The Literary Digest for September 2, 1922) Radio News tells of the successful experiment of the Chevrolet Motor Company, proving that radio equipment operates satisfactorily in an automobile without the use of a ground If the political candidate had a broadcasting station available he could send a radio-equipped car to every voting area in his State, and talk to all his constituents at the same time, thus saving his vocal cords and making it possible for his hearers to stop listening when they become tired. The installation of this equipment in the Chevrolet car is so simple it is possible to adapt it to many uses, and, therefore, we may expect to see many cars similarly equipped in the future. It is only a matter of a few moments to remove the radio equipment from the car when it is not desired for use there. It can then be used in the home or office, or any other place desired. Just as anywhere on the high seas ships can keep constantly in touch with ports and other ships through the use of the radio, now the automobile the land ship-- can immediately facilitate distribution of information to the great benefit of mankind. One ingenious amateur, by utilizing the power of the generator on his car not only receives messages, but also transmits them. Such equipment makes possible the use of motor cars as scouts or reporters of crop, weather or news messages from any part of the country.

5 December January Volume LIII, Number 1 NASA ON THE AIR... (from the ARRL news pages) 11/22/2017 Year-Long NASA On The Air Event Kicks off on December 11 The Amateur Radio clubs at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) centers around the US have invited the Amateur Radio community to join the NASA On The Air (NOTA) special event. NOTA gets under way in December 2017 and continues through December In addition to being the agency s 60th anniversary, 2018 will mark 50 years since NASA orbited the first human around the moon, and 20 years since the first elements of the International Space Station (ISS) were launched into low- Earth orbit. Starting on Monday, December 11, 2017 (UTC), Amateur Radio club stations at various NASA centers and facilities will be on the air with special event operations to celebrate these monumental achievements, as well as current milestones. Some clubs will offer commemorative QSL cards, and a special certificate will be available indicating the number of NASA club stations worked on various bands and modes. We plan to have a web-based system for you to check your points total and download a printable certificate at the end of the event in December 2018, the NASA announcement said. Points will be awarded for each center worked on each band and mode (phone, CW, digital, and space modes satellites, meteor scatter, EME, ISS APRS). That would, of course, include contacts with any of the Amateur Radio stations on the ISS. Key anniversaries during NOTA include the 45th anniversary of Apollo 17 on December 11, 2017, which kicks off the event; NASA s founding on July 29, 1958; the 20th anniversary of the ISS first element launch on November 20, 1998; the 20th anniversary of the ISS Node 1 Launch on December 4, 1998, and the 50th anniversary of Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 1968, and returned on December 27 marking the end of the event. Ham radio clubs at various NASA facilities will sponsor their own special events to commemorate and celebrate specific events. We hope to be on the air for casual contacts and contests as well. All contacts with NASA club stations will count toward your total, the announcement said. QSL cards can be requested from each club you work and details will be on the individual QRZ.com profile page for each club call sign.
