Tag UHF Transceiver Tag Operational Mode Transceiver Operational Mode Heart Beat Logger Power Pulse Data Throttle COLOC A tag is defined as a unit to be placed on an animal (i.e. collar) that transmits a UHF signal to be tracked. The transceiver is a tracking device that allows for bi-directional communications to and from the tag. The operational modes in a tag are low power features and high power features. A Transceivers operational modes allow for different tracking data to be viewed. A heart beat is a transmitted RF signal containing tag information. A logger is the storage of data for later recall. Typically GPS data A power pulse is one high power heart beat between many low power heart beats. Limit the data throughput Co-Location of two tags that communicate to each other by exchanging data. 8 7. Configurations To make use of the features in the four different modes provided by the Transceiver, different configurations are required as shown in the figures below. These configurations will make use of both antenna ports for Omnidirectional (whip antenna) and Yagi antennas. Omnidirectional antennas will pick up signals from any direction but are typically less sensitive than Yagi Antennas. Yagi antennas are very directional and can pick up signals from further provided the antenna is pointed in the direction of the signal. It should be noted that the coaxial cable used to connect the antenna must be kept to a minimum length as this will prevent signal loss. The Figure below shows the typical radiation patterns of the two antennas for interest. The Left antenna connector is the transceivers main control interface and is used to transmit configuration messages to the tags. Both left and right connectors are used to receive tag signals. The only time the right connector is enabled is in Dual Mode. The stereo headphones output is permanently enabled with the received signal strength represented as a tone in both left and right ears. The stronger the received signal the higher the tone. In Dual mode the tone will only be played on the side the signal is strongest. The Master Tag connector is used to interface to a computer running the AWT Tracker application to send and receive real time data from tags. The only time the Control Port connector is to be used is to load encryption keys and download GPS log data. 18 GPS Logger The GPS Logger menu allows the user to configure, download and query the logger on the tag. The configuration consists of time intervals at which the tag must take GPS log recordings. The download enables the user to download log data from start to stop dates and time with a query reporting back the total log entries only. To download all the log data from a tag, simply press the enter button without selecting a start and stop date. If the download process is interrupted for more than 5 seconds an Auto Retry will start. An Auto Retry will request the log data from the point it lost connection. The Transceiver will automatically save received log data to non-volatile memory. The received log data is not checked against the transceivers memory and therefore multiple copies of the same data can exist. This will however be filtered by the AWT Tracker application when uploading. The encrypted log data consists of the following: - GPS co-ordinates - Date and time - Temperature 1 OP MODE : NORMAL RF POWER : DEFAULT H BEAT INT: ----sec PWER PULSE: DEFAULT GPS LOGGER: 6 HOUR 1211 TAG ID : RSSI : OP MODE: SW VER : TIME : CNFG BAS 1 OP MODE : NORMAL RF POWER : DEFAULT H BEAT INT: ----sec PWER PULSE: DEFAULT GPS LOGGER: DNLOAD START --:--:--:--:-- STOP --:--:--:--:-- YY MM DD HH MM Enter Start and Stop dates and time 1211 TAG ID : RSSI : OP MODE: SW VER : TIME : CNFG BAS 1 OP MODE : NORMAL RF POWER : DEFAULT H BEAT INT: ----sec PWER PULSE: DEFAULT GPS LOGGER: QUERY 1211 TAG ID : RSSI : OP MODE: SW VER : TIME : CNFG BAS Wait for Tag to tag in 1211 LOGGER : QUERING TAG ID : 1211 ENTRIES: GPS LOGGER OFF : Switch off GPS logger 10 MIN : Take log reading every 10 minutes 1 HOUR : Take log reading every 1 hour 6 HOURS : Take log reading every 6 hours 12 HOURS : Take log reading every 12 hours 24 HOURS : Take log reading every 24 hours 48 HOURS : Take log reading every 48 hour DNLOAD : Download logs QUERY : Query total log reading count STOP : Stop current download CLEAR : Clear log entries in tag Wait for Tag to tag in 1211 LOGGER : QUERING TAG ID : 1211 ENTRIES: 180 STOP 1211 LOGGER : DOWNLOADING TAG ID : 1211 ENTRIES: 20/180 If connection lost.
