2 President's Shack month. December is election month! We will have three new board members for the coming year: Mark, W6BST, Jeff, N6LIP, and Keith, N6WZZ. Steve, KK6JTB, will continue as our incoming president. I know that they will do a great job! Many thanks to Bill, WA6QYR, for his many years of continuing service as secretary. I want to thank our outgoing board members, Mike, WA6ARA, and Paula, N6VGW, for their efforts in the past year. I also want to thank Mike for the great job he does on The Airwaves every It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the president of ARC for the past two years. As a relative newcomer to Indian Wells Valley, I have had the opportunity to better know the club and our membership. SARC performs wonderful community support, has great social events and supports our local ham radio community as well as our "extended family" of clubs, namely Bishop and California City. To see members of those clubs travel to attend our meetings speaks much for our club. This is my last "President's Message," and without further delay, this is W6DQ saying 73, we'll be QRT. SARC 13 November Board Minutes The board discussed the need for a 1st VP nominee SARC 13 November Meeting Minutes The meeting was opened by Dennis W6DQ at 7:05 PM and he thanked Mark W6BST for bringing the snacks. Our visitor was Gordon (no call yet). Keith W6KRF from Lone Pine was again with us. Bob KC6YYT announced that ARES would be dark until January because of the holidays. Bob AF6HF indicated that there were some very south Atlantic DXepditions on the air and that he had worked South Africa. Mike said that the Git-RGone ride communications went well with lots of members helping out. He also attended Pacificon this year and said that it was a little smaller than previous years. Nominations for next year s SARC officers include Steve KK6JTB President; 1 st VP open: 2nd VP Jeff N6LIP: Secretary Bill WA6QYR; and Treasurer Keith N6WZZ. Upcoming events include the Desert Classic Bike ride on 18 November and the OTHTC runner event on 3 December. Starting 1 January 2018 ARRL will be having a new grid contest for stations around the world. Log book of the World will be the place to report your collection. For show and tell, Mike WA6ARA had a new KX meter rig and a homemade 40 meter rig.

3 SARC is having a coax sale of RG-58 at 25 cents a foot (minimum 50 ft) and RG-8 at 50 cents a foot (minimum 50ft). See Mike WA6ARA. There have been some SSTV going on over the repeater to members. A reminder to get on the IWV Emergency Net Mondays at 7:30pm pl FM; The 10 meter net Mondays at 8pm on 28.4 MHz USB and the Lone Pine two meter net on MHz USB. The program was presented by Keith W3ISZ about what he and his wife, Virginia, did during the resent eclipse. He used a homemade 8 inch reflector telescope mounted on a Home Depot wood gimbal system. He had a solar filter on the front of the scope so he could take pictures with his electronic camera with a Raspberry PI3 processor. He ended up operating from the desert in eastern Oregon. Keith had some good pictures of the eclipse and the land around his site. Thanks Keith. The Home Depot $25 gift card was won by Alex KM6DLI. The 50/50 drawing $13 went to Keith W6SIY. The meeting was over at 8:30 pm. Only 8 sets are available. Additional adapters / connectors a mix up various connectors and adapters. Price will be on the honor system Cable collection a bunch of cables, coax, etc will be available all small and used. Free! Get A Radio Working Again! We have several Hallicrafters S-40 and Hammarlund S-600 receivers in need of some love. These are classic boat anchor radios, probably have not been turned on for a few decades. We are proposing a group repair / learning event where we will go over what to do, how to do, what needs to be replaced and what does not. Hopefully at the end have at least a functioning receiver. The date and time has not been setup yet. There will not be a cost for the receiver but will be for various replacement parts. And you end up with a functional radio. Please let Dennis, W6DQ know if you are interested. What is a Hallicrafters S-40 and what is involved? Check out v=uuwuunamgq8 ISS SSTV The ISS will be transmitting slow scan TV this week. Starting on December 5, at 1500UTC till about 0900UTC on December 6. The Frequency will be MHz. The likely mode is PD180. There are two good passes during this time. At the present time, they occure at 3:33pm and 10:02pm of December 5th. Start listening about 10 minutes prior to the starting times. 10 Meter Contest! The ARRL 10 meter contest is this weekend, 9 / 10 December. This is a great time to get on the air on 10 meters and have fun. All hams can participate in this, as Technicians and up all have privilages on 10 meters. With the activity this contest brings out, the band will be open somewhere. Check out the ARRL website for details on the contest, the exchange and other details. What? Don't a have a rig for 10 meters? Bill, WA6QYR has a fine one for sale, check the sell items at the end of the newsletter.

5 Winter Field Day 27 / 28 January 2018 Winter Field Day is coming up! Not as well known as the June setting for Field Day, never the less it is growning in popularity. Last year SARC made a modest entry as a one day sprint style operation out in the field. Hopefully we will do so again this year. For more information check out NASA On The Air (NOTA) NASA Centers will be on the air starting on December 11 th for a year long special event. Check out nasaontheair.wordpress.com for more details. ARRL International Grid Chase! The ARRL International Grid Chase starts on January 1, 2018, at 0000 UTC. This is a year-long event hopes to building on the 2016 National Parks on the Air (NPOTA). The objective is to work stations on any band (except 60 meters) in as many different Maidenhead grid squares as possible, and then upload your log data to Logbook of The World (LoTW). If you don t know your grid square, there is an online calculator at : Getting started is simple: Turn on the radio and call CQ or CQ Grid Chase, or listen for others doing the same. Make the contact, exchange grid squares, log it, and move on to another. At the end of each month, your totals on the Grid Chase Leader Board will reset to zero, although the system retains all monthly data to determine top finishers in various categories at the end of the year. Any contact you make in 2018 can count for your Chase score; it doesn t have to involve an exchange of grid squares. There are no restrictions on modes or bands, as long as they are legal.the event is open to all radio amateurs. Complete details of the ARRL International Grid Chase will appear in the December 2017 issue of QST. The digital edition is available on Friday, November 10.

6 IWV Emcomm Moment ARRL has several emergency communications classes for hams to take. EC001 Introduction to Emergency Communications is a 45 hour class giving you all you need to know about EMCOMM. To take it you need to take two FEMA classes to give you some background and $50. Go to and look for IS b Introduction to Incident Command System and IS a Introduction to National Incident Management System. These are free classes and are 8 hours each. You get a certificate when you successfully complete them. The ARRL class is on-line and you can take it in bits and pieces as you have time, but you have like 3 months to complete the class and take the final exam. The next ARRL class is EC002 Level 2 Intermediate Amateur Radio EMCOMM. It again is some 45 hours long and takes $50. The prerequisites for it are FEMA classes IS b ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incident, and IS a Introduction to National Response Framework. These are good classes to take so you will know how to work ARES with served agencies and government services like the police and fire department. Bill WA6QYR January T-Hunt We took a little break from T-Hunting in November due to scheduling conflicts. The Next T-Hunt will be in January, the exact date has not been set yet but will be announced. Maybe in conjunction with Winter Field Day? Look for the January issue of the Airwaves for more info.
