3 1. Introduction The Logika Technologies infrared laser optical barrier, Model OB-ITF, is designed for automation of steel, aluminum, and other metal mill production lines. With its high-output LED laser, the OB-ITF is well suited to detect billets and slabs in reheat furnaces. It exhibits strong antijamming in high radiation environments and performs well around fog, dust and water. The OB-ITF is specially designed for harsh conditions in heavy industrial environments. The IP66 rugged enclosure protects state-of the-art electronics which allows the sensor to withstand these conditions. The fiber allows the electronics to be positioned away from the worst of the heat from the furnaces. Applications include continuous casting, Slab Yard and transportation chain. 2. 5 2.3 Operating Principle The OB-ITF uses a high powered modulated infrared laser as light source. The laser is transmitted through a fiber optic cable and lens, across the furnace and is picked up by a matching lens and fiber. It is then sent to the Receiver where it is converted to an electrical signal. This signal is filtered, amplified and passed through a threshold. If the level is too low or completely absent, the Detect output is set. Figure 2.2: OB-ITF detection system P a g e 4

Location 3.1 Sensor Location The Logika OB-ITF should be installed with the lenses on the same light axis, i.e. pointing directly towards each other, with nothing blocking the light path except target objects. Maximum ambient temperature at the OB-ITF is 70 o C (160 o F). The installation of OB-ITF requires the Emitter and Receiver to be installed on either side of the target area. It is recommended that the maximum distance between the two be 50m. 3.2 Sensor Mounting The Logika OB-ITF Optical Barrier has been designed to have the electronic Emitter and Receiver units mounted in separate junction boxes, the lens assemblies mounted near the target object and the two connected with shielded fiber optic cable. See Figure 2.2 The Lens Mounting Plates are slotted to allow about 30 motion in both the horizontal and vertical planes. This is to provide sufficient motion to align Emitter and Receiver on the same light axis. 3.3 Sensor Aiming To aid in aligning the Emitter and Receiver, the Receiver has a series of Signal Strength LEDs. The better the alignment, the more LEDs will illuminate. Also, a visible laser alignment tool may be used to allow the technician to see where the Emitter is pointing, fine tuning the alignment later using the indicating LEDs. Note that the lens units are provided with slotted plates, one each for the Emitter and Receiver. These change the beam from a circle to a bar, allowing finer resolution of the target object s position. The slotted plates should be mounted in the same orientation. P a g e 5
7 4. Utility Connections 4.1 Electrical Connections Electrical Overview- All electrical connections (power and signal) to the OB-ITF are made via a 12-pin connector with ground. The sensor is supplied with a mating connector at the back of its enclosure and a standard 2-meter cable with the quick-connect assembly mating to the sensor and bare wire terminals for the junction box connections. Other cable lengths are available from Logika Technologies upon request. Cable Specification Outer steel braid for mechanical protection. Overall diameter of 9 mm. Minimum bending radius of 30 mm. Each lead is color-coded and numerically tagged. Leads terminated with ferrules Junction Box Wiring- Please see the Cable Terminal Wiring Description Figure 4.1 below for the sensor wiring terminal description. The supplied cable should be connected directly to the terminals of a junction box. All cables must be shielded all the way to the junction box with the shield connected to ground to eliminate electrical noise, which may trigger false detection. Any unused output wires must have insulation protection or be connected to a free terminal of junction box. Power Connections- Power Input (please specify power input at time of order). Green POWER LED: Power indication Yellow NORMAL LED: Signal warning If less than 3 Green signal LEDs are ON, then the yellow LED will turn on. Maintenance 6.1 Regular Maintenance Regular attention to the following will ensure steady operation of the sensor: Routinely check the OB-ITF Emitter and Receiver lens glass for dust or oil residue. When necessary, clean with alcohol and lens paper or soft cloth. Check and retighten lens mounts on a monthly basis, being careful not to affect the alignment of the two lenses. 6.2 Returns of the OB-ITF- Contact us at ( LOGIKA ) with the Serial Number of your sensor before you return the product. If we are unable to solve the problem by phone or , we will then provide you with a return authorization number. Do not return the OB-ITF without an authorization number. If the product is out of warranty, we will provide a repair estimate and then complete the repairs after your approval. P a g e 11
13 7. Laser Safety 1. The six green LEDs in a row across the top of the Emitter s Indication Window show when the laser is on and its relative strength. 2. Do NOT look into or touch the laser emitting source. 3. Take precautions to keep any shiny reflective object well away from the laser beam. 4. Do NOT allow this laser to shine onto a human body. Ensure that there is no danger of human exposure in the area where it is set up. 5. Operate only according to Class IIIb laser safety regulations.. P a g e 12
