Motif Filters Getting Started The latest Motif engineering software release adds Noise Filters and Output Filters for the Audion 16 product. The two output filters provide the flexibility to adjust the overall frequency response for all programs and the two noise filters add the flexibility to adjust the Noise Generator frequency response independent from the microphone frequency response. Each of the filters offer 12 preset filters (6 HighPass filters and 6 LowPass filters) and the option to create custom filters. The Noise and Output Filters can be found on the Configuration tab. The Noise and Output Filters must be enabled before filter adjustments can be made. When the enabled box is checked, both Filter #1 and Filter #2 are enabled.
All Filters have a Frequency (Fc) range from 125Hz to 7000Hz in 125Hz increments, A Q range from.1 to 5, and a Gain range from -30 to 30. However, any number in these ranges can be entered into the text box manually. The Calculate button must be pressed to calculate the filter using the numbers entered into the text boxes.

Output Filters The Output filter settings affect the response curve for all programs. Output Filters - Preset High Pass The preset HighPass filter cutoff frequencies are as follows: HighPass Preset Unity HighPass Preset 1 (500 Hz) HighPass Preset 2 (1000 Hz) HighPass Preset 3 (2000 Hz)
HighPass Preset 4 (3000 Hz) HighPass Preset 5 (4000 Hz) HighPass Preset 6 (5000 Hz)
Output Filters - Preset LowPass The preset LowPass filter cutoff frequencies are as follows: LowPass Preset Unity LowPass Preset 1 (1000 Hz) LowPass Preset 2 (2000 Hz) LowPass Preset 3 (3000 Hz)
LowPass Preset 4 (4000 Hz) LowPass Preset 5 (5000 Hz) LowPass Preset 6 (6000 Hz)
Output Filters - Custom Custom Output filter types are also available. The following custom filters can be selected and configured; High Pass, Low Pass, Peak, Notch, Low Shelf, High Shelf. When you select Custom, the Biquad calculator will be shown greyed out and not accessible. To create a Custom filter, start by pressing the New button. Pressing the New button will allow you to access the custom filter adjustments.
Custom Filter Types LowPass Filter HighPass Filter BandPass FiIter Notch Filter Peak Filter (negative gain) Peak Filter (positive gain)
Low Shelf Filter (negative gain) Low Shelf Filter (positive gain) High Shelf Filter (negative gain) High Shelf Filter (positive gain) The Frequency (Fc (Hz)) is adjustable on all of the custom filter types from 125Hz to7khz. The Q is only adjustable on the HighPass, LowPass, Peak and Notch filters and the Gain (db) is only adjustable on the Peak, Low Shelf and High Shelf filters. Some combinations of the Frequency, Q and Gain setting are not supported depending on Filter Type selected. After setting the filter to the desired settings, press Apply to load the settings in the instrument and remain on the current screen or press OK to load the settings in the instrument and exit to the fitting screen.
Output Filters - Combining Filters Both output filters can be used at the same time. Two preset or custom filters can be used together or one preset and one custom filter. The sample below shows a custom High Shelf filter and a preset LowPass filter #4 being used together. When the Show Both Filters checkbox is checked, it shows the combined effect of both filters.
By simply sliding the filter adjustment window to the right, the filter effect on the response curve can be seen as adjustments are saved. Before: Changes have not been saved After: Changes have been loaded to device(s)
Noise Filters The Audion 16 amplifier has an internal random noise generator that creates a flat spectrum, pseudo-random digital noise sequence. The Noise Generator can be set up as Input Referred or Output Referred. The noise generator sound level and reference settings can be set on the Noise Generator tab. Noise Filters - Input Referred vs Output Referred When setting the reference setting on the Noise Generator tab, you have a choice of using Input Referred or Output Referred. When Input Referred is selected, the Enabled checkbox on the Noise Filters tab is not checked and the filters are not enabled, when Output Referred is selected, the Enabled checkbox on the Noise Filters tab is checked and the filters are enabled. Also, checking the Enabled checkbox on the Noise Filters tab will change the Reference setting on the Noise Generator tab from Input Referred to Output Referred. When using the Input Referred setting, the following slider settings will affect the frequency response; Band Gain Equalizer, Compression Ratios, Compression Thresholds, Overall Gain, Input Filter Low Cut, Noise Reduction. These slider settings will not affect the frequency response of the noise when the Output Referred setting is selected. This allows the noise generator response to be shaped different than the microphone response.
Noise Filters - Preset High Pass The preset HighPass filter cutoff frequencies are as follows: HighPass Preset Unity HighPass Preset 1 (500 Hz) HighPass Preset 2 (1000 Hz) HighPass Preset 3 (2000 Hz)
HighPass Preset 4 (3000 Hz) HighPass Preset 5 (4000 Hz) HighPass Preset 6 (5000 Hz)
Noise Filters - Preset LowPass The preset LowPass filter cutoff frequencies are as follows: LowPass Preset Unity LowPass Preset 1 (1000 Hz) LowPass Preset 2 (2000 Hz) LowPass Preset 3 (3000 Hz)
LowPass Preset 4 (4000 Hz) LowPass Preset 5 (5000 Hz) LowPass Preset 6 (6000 Hz)
Noise Filters - Custom Custom Noise Filter types are also available. The following custom filters can be selected and configured; HighPass, LowPass, Peak, Notch, Low Shelf, High Shelf. When you select Custom, the Biquad calculator will be shown greyed out and not accessible. To start setting a Custom filter, press the New button. Pressing the New button will allow you to access the custom filter adjustments.
Custom Filter Types LowPass Filter HighPass Filter BandPass FiIter Notch Filter Peak Filter (negative gain) Peak Filter (positive gain)
Low Shelf Filter (negative gain shown) High Shelf Filter (negative gain shown) Positive gain setting is also available on Low Shelf Filter and High Shelf Filter. The Frequency (Fc (Hz)) is adjustable on all of the custom filter types from 125Hz to7khz. The Q is only adjustable on the HighPass, LowPass, Peak and Notch filters. The Gain (db) is only adjustable on the Peak, Low Shelf and High Shelf filters. Some combinations of the Frequency, Q and Gain setting are not supported depending on Filter Type selected. After setting the filter to the desired settings, press Apply to load the settings in the instrument and remain on the current screen or press OK to load the settings in the instrument and exit to the fitting screen.
Noise Filters - Combining Filters Both noise filters can be used at the same time. Two preset or custom filters can be used together or one preset and one custom filter. The sample below shows a custom High Shelf filter and a preset LowPass filter #4 being used together. When the Show Both Filters checkbox is checked, it shows the combined effect of both filters.
Filters Setting Warning If the Custom Filter is set to an unsupported setting combination, a red circle with an exclamation mark will be displayed on the screen. If you hover the mouse pointer over the red circle with an exclamation mark, a message stating the Biquad filter is out of range must be between 2 and -2. Expand Biquad filter panel for more information will be displayed. Press the two gold arrows next to Biquad Filters to open the Biquad Filters panel to review the Biquad coefficients.
Adjust the FC, Q and Gain sliders until the red circle with an exclamation mark is no longer displayed. Adjusting the Q and Gain slider settings will typically resolve the issue.
