12 1 General Description This chapter gives an overview and introduces the features of the KSG3600. Product Overview The KSG3600 is a signal generator used as a pseudo voice source in the measurement of crosstalk in communication circuits, across speech paths, and the like. The KSG3600 generates pseudo voice spectrum according to the characteristics defined in the ITU-T Recommendation G.227. The noise signal source is an M-sequence pseudo random signal using a maximum length sequence generated with a DSP. The DSP generates a stable pseudo white noise that would not be possible using analog circuits. See Page 17 Firmware Version of the Product to Which This Manual Applies This manual applies to a KSG3600 with firmware version 1.0x. When making an inquiry about the product, please provide us with the following information. Model (indicated at the bottom section on the front panel) Firmware version Serial number (indicated at the bottom section on the rear panel) Features Generation of stable pseudo white noise using an M-sequence pseudo random signal generated with a DSP. M-sequence period (maximum period for PN31) of approximately 1 hour. Implementation of the characteristic filter defined in ITU-T Recommendation G.227 using a digital filter consisting of a highly stable DSP. Sine wave signal generation using a numeric controlled oscillator (NCO). 12 KSG3600

16 Installation and Preparation 2.4 Connecting the Power Cord This product is designed as an equipment of IEC Overvoltage Category II (energyconsuming equipment supplied from the fixed installation). WARNING Possible electric shock. This product is an IEC Safety Class I equipment (equipment with a protective conductor terminal). Always ground the power supply. Be sure to connect the protective ground terminal to an appropriate earth ground. Use the supplied power cord to connect to the AC line. If the supplied power cord cannot be used due to the rated voltage or the plug type, have a qualified engineer replace it with an appropriate power cord of length 3 m or less. If obtaining a power cord is difficult, consult your Kikusui agent or distributor. The power cord with a plug can be used to disconnect the product from the AC line in an emergency. Connect the plug to an easily accessible power outlet so that the plug can be removed from the outlet at any time. Be sure to allow enough space around the power outlet. Do not use the supplied power cord for other instruments. Be sure to ground the product for your safety. Connect the power cord to a three-prong power outlet with proper grounding. See Page 26 1 Check that the AC power line complies with the input rating of the product. The voltage that can be applied is any of the nominal power supply voltages in the range of 100 VAC to 240 VAC. The frequency is 50 Hz or 60 Hz. 2 Check that the POWER switch is turned off. 3 Connect the power cord to the AC INPUT inlet on the rear panel. 4 Insert the power plug to an outlet. 16 KSG3600

17 Installation and Preparation 2.5 Turning On the Power See Page 25 Turning the POWER switch on Turn the power on with the OUTPUT terminal disconnected. 1 Press the ( ) side of the POWER switch to turn the KSG3600 on. If an odd sound, odd odor, fire, or smoke occurs around or in the KSG3600, remove the plug of power cord from the outlet or turn the switchboard breaker off. All the LEDs illuminate along with a startup sound, and the firmware version is displayed. 2 Check the firmware version. The KSG3600 displays the firmware version as indicated in Fig.2-3 for few seconds and performs a self-test. If no error is detected, the setting display appears. If an error is detected, the KSG3600 sounds an alarm and displays an error number. The setting display appears after displaying the firmware version. dbm Hz Fig.2-3 Checking the firmware version (example for Ver. 1.00) If the POWER switch is turned on for the first time after purchase, the KSG3600 starts up using factory default settings. For all other cases, the following items start up with the settings when the POWER switch was turned off the last time. Filter on/off. Output waveform (sine wave or noise). Frequency and level settings. The output and key lock status when the POWER switch is turned off is not stored. The output and key lock are always off at power-on. CONTROL OUTPUT FILTER FUNCTION ON G.227 NOISE SINE ENTRY dbm Hz Fig.2-4 Setting display Turning the POWER switch off Press the ( ) side of the POWER switch on the rear panel to turn the KSG3600 off. Check that there is no tears or breaks in the power cord insulation. WARNING Tears or breaks in the insulation coating of the power cord may cause electric shock or fire. If a tear or break is found, stop using it immediately. To purchase accessories or options, contact your Kikusui agent or distributor Cleaning WARNING Possible electric shock. It may lead to death or injury. Be sure to turn off the POWER switch and unplug the plug of power cord from the outlet before performing maintenance work. Cleaning the panels If the panel needs cleaning, gently wipe using a soft cloth with water-diluted neutral detergent. CAUTION Do not use volatile chemicals such as benzene or thinner as they may discolor the surface, erase printed characters, cloud the display, and so on. KSG

24 Maintenance Replacing the Fuse WARNING Possible electric shock. Be sure to turn off the POWER switch and unplug the plug of power cord from the outlet before checking or replacing the fuse. CAUTION Possible damage to the KSG3600. Use a fuse of shape, rating, and characteristics that conform to the KSG3600. Do not use the KSG3600 with the fuse holder shorted. 1 Turn the POWER switch off the rear panel and remove the plug of power cord from the outlet. 2 Disconnect the power cord from the AC INPUT inlet on the rear panel. 3 Use a flat-blade screwdriver and remove the fuse holder as shown in Fig Replace the fuse (rating: 250 VAC, 2.5 A (T)). Fuse Spare fuse Fig.4-1 Replacing the fuse 4.2 Calibration The KSG3600 is shipped after carrying out appropriate calibrations. We recommend periodic calibration to maintain the performance. For calibration, contact your Kikusui agent or distributor. 24 KSG3600

25 Maintenance 4.3 Troubleshooting See Page 22 If you suspect that the KSG3600 has malfunctioned, check whether any of the items below apply to your case. In some cases, the problem can be solved quite easily. If you find an item that corresponds to your case, follow the remedy for the item. If you do not, we recommend that you initialize the KSG3600. If the remedy does not correct the problem, contact your Kikusui agent or distributor. The panel display does not turn on even when the POWER switch is turned on. Check Item Check Possible Cause Remedy Is the rated voltage being applied to the AC inlet? Is the fuse blown? No Yes Yes Broken power cord. Bad contact at the AC inlet.
