5 1. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers the requirements for single-mode optical fibres, optimised for use in the nm and/or nm windows. 1.2 The cable make-up is detailed in specification SPC for underground and aerial cables. 1.3 A schedule of the cable composition will be attached to the Schedule of Requirements. 2. STANDARDS 2.1 Except where otherwise stated in this specification, fibres must conform to the most recent edition of recommendation G.652 of the ITU-T. Tenderers must state if their fibres offered deviate in any way from this recommendation. 2.2 Test methods used shall be in accordance with the most recent edition of recommendation G.650 of the ITU-T. 3. MATERIAL PROPERTIES 3.1 The core must be of high-grade silica doped as necessary to provide the required characteristics. 3.2 The primary coating must be an inert material, the physical and chemical properties of which must be specified. 3.3 This material must be readily removed for jointing purposes without damage to the fibre. The method used for removing the primary coating must be specified. 4. FIBRE CHARACTERISTICS 4.1 The attenuation coefficient of every fibre, measured after cabling, must be provided. 4.2 The tenderer must guarantee that the fibres offered meet the following requirements : (a) Mode field diameter at1 310 nm : 9,2 µm ±0,4 µm. (b) Cladding diameter : 124 µm 126 µm. (c) Mode field concentricity error : Less than 1 µm. (d) Cladding non-circularity : 1% maximum. (e) Attenuation at nm : 0,35 db/km maximum (f) Dispersion at nm : 3,0 ps/nm.km maximum. (g) Attenuation at nm : 0,22 db/km maximum (h) Dispersion at nm : 19 ps/nm.km maximum. (i) PMD link value : Less then 0,6 ps / km 4.3 The refractive index for each fibre must be provided. Author : BG Nel COMMERCIAL-IN-CONFIDENCE Page 5 of 6
6 5. MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE 5.1 Proof Strain 5.2 Bending Each primary coated fibre shall be proof-tested during manufacture to a value of at least 1% strain. The loss increase due to bending of a fibre shall not exceed the values shown in the table. MANDREL DIA. NO. OF TURNS WAVELENGTH INDUCED ATTENUATION 50 mm ,05 db 50 mm ,10 db 6. INFORMATION TO BE FURNISHED WITH TENDERS 6.1 Notwithstanding whether the fibre offered complies or does not comply with the requirements of subclause 4.2, the following information shall be furnished with the tender. The parameters shall be reported on the fibres after they have been cabled Attenuation coefficient at nm and nm Dispersion coefficient at nm and 1550 nm Mode field diameter Cut-off wavelength Cladding diameter Cladding non-circularity Mode-field concentricity error Mode-field diameter non-circularity Coating diameter Cladding/coating concentricity error Fibre curl Temperature test ( 5/+70 C Aerial) and (-5/+40 C Underground) Failure probability Coating material Date of G.650 and G.652 recommendations complied to.
