EPSON Australia RGB Workflow Photoshop Elements 3 MAC OSX
Introduction
Introduction The RGB Workflow Guide is designed as an introductory reference and we recommend further reading from books and the internet. Colour management is a complex subject that can take many years to study. This document describes the basic RGB workflow for EPSON printers.
Display Calibration and Profiling The window to colour
Display Calibration & Profiling The cornerstone of a colour managed workflow is a profiled and calibrated display. You cannot colour correct on screen nor expect any match between screen and print if the monitor is unprofiled. Displays can be profiled and calibrated either visually by eye or by instrument a colorimeter or spectrophotometer. Visual software can be used to calibrate and profile displays but it is unreliable and can only be as good as your own judgment in differing conditions. Instrument profiling is the only way to obtain an accurate display profile. Companies such as Gretag Macbeth and Colorvision produce excellent, affordable products for performing monitor profiling and calibration. This method is highly recommended.
Display Calibration & Profiling Calibration puts the monitor into a known state. Profiling describes the output capabilities of the monitor. Instrument based software usually combines the two steps. A profiled monitor will give you the best chance of a match between screen and print. Because displays change over time, monitor profiling should be repeated on a regular basis at least once a month.
Photoshop Elements 3
Photoshop Elements 3 Elements 3 load screen
Photoshop Elements 3 Start up screen. Select your preferred option.
Photoshop Elements 3 Colour Setup
Colour Setup Correctly setting up Photoshop Elements is essential. Select>Photoshop Elements>Color Settings.
Colour Setup Select>Full Color Management. Press OK
Photoshop Elements 3 Image Setup
Image Setup Photoshop Elements 3 has a cut down version of the colour management setup to Photoshop CS2. Although there is the ability to work in larger colour spaces like Adobe RGB(1998), Elements will consider what profile is embedded, i.e. srgb. If your Digital Camera has Adobe RGB(1998) capability then this should be used.
Image Setup Open your desired image. If the image has a no profile, this dialogue box is presented. Select>Assign Adobe RGB. Assigning the profile can alter the images colour slightly. This is not necessarily a bad thing it can allow for a better colour reproduction.
Image Setup Unfortunately Elements 3 does not have a Soft Proofing function like Photoshop. Therefore, the function of using the printers paper profile to simulate the final print to screen is not available. Soft proofing to screen is only a simulation, this workflow will produce similar results as if printing using Photoshop.
Printing to EPSON RGB Printing
RGB Printing After selecting Page Setup for the required media print size. Select>File>Print.
RGB Printing Select>Show More Options.
RGB Printing Select>Print Space to obtain the correct Printer Model and Paper profile. Select Rendering Intent. Press Print. Only select either Perceptual or Relative Colorimetric, these are photographic intents. More on this on the next page.
RGB Printing Rendering Intents are used to move colour from input devices such as cameras or scanners to output devices like printers. Perceptual and Relative Colorimetric are more common photographic intents. Saturation and Absolute Colorimetric are not suited for this kind of imaging. Perceptual is suited more for colour imaging where as Relative Colorimetric is suited for colour and black & white imaging.
RGB Printing This screen may appear the first time you print with Elements 3 Select>Don t show again. This is irrelevant for printing to an Epson Printer.
RGB Printing Select>Printer. Select>Print Settings. Select>Media Type. Select>Advanced. Select>Print Quality. Make sure the Media Type matches the paper in the printer and the selected Printer Space profile.
RGB Printing Select>Color Management. Select>Off (No Color Adjustment). The reason for selecting No Color Adjustment is so that the output profile does the colour adjustment. Select>Preview, if you wish to see the position of the print on paper.
RGB Printing Preview Screen displays a layout only representation of the image. This is only to be used to visualise the position of the image on the selected paper size. DO NOT USE PREVIEW FOR COLOUR MATCHING! Select>Print to output.
Conclusion Thank you for taking the time to read through this document. EPSON Australia hope that this helps with the results you are trying to achieve. This document is an introduction to the world of colour management and inkjet printing.
