1 Using the ICC Profiles - Windows Description Using the ICC Profiles - Windows Solution Using Canon ICC Color Profiles Profiles for Canon paper are installed when you install the printer driver on your computer. The profiles are specific to images created in Adobe RGB color space (as opposed to the standard srgb), Canon paper and Canon ink. By viewing these profiles using an application that supports ICC color profiles (like Adobe Photoshop), the profile information will be read, and the names will appear in a more usable format. This profile information format will list the name of the printer, the Custom Quality setting in the driver (designated by a single digit number) and the paper type (designated by two alpha characters). The paper type abbreviations are: PR = Photo Paper Pro, SP = Photo Paper Plus and MP = Matte Photo Paper. The specific profile information can also be found by searching for those files, right-clicking on them, clicking on Properties, and then clicking on the Profile Information tab. Note: When you need to specify the printer profile, select the ICC profile for the Canon paper you are using. The profile names for other manufacturers' papers will appear differently. PR = Photo Paper Pro and Photo Paper Pro II SP: = Photo Paper Plus Glossy MP: = Matte Photo Paper SG: = Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss GL: = Photo Paper Plus Glossy II PT: = Photo Paper Pro Platinum Note: If your printer does not support one of the above paper types, the corresponding profile will not be installed. Please see the on-screen manual of your printer for supported paper types. (3) Print quality The numbers correspond to the numbers on the print quality slide bar in the [Set Print Quality] dialog box opened from the [Print Quality] tab of the driver. 2 ICC Profiles Guide Dedicated ICC profiles provided to allow accurate rendering of image data recorded in Adobe RGB color space. What is Adobe RGB color space? The most widely used color space for digital camera image data is the srgb color space. But in addition to srgb, certain high-end cameras such as the EOS-1Ds/1D/10D are capable of recording image data in Adobe RGB color space, a color space commonly used for commercial printing applications. Adobe RGB color space provides a broader color gamut than srgb, particularly for colors in the cyan to green region. The reproduction range of BJ printers is similarly extended beyond the srgb range in the cyan to green region. In other words, Adobe RGB provides a better match of the color reproduction ranges between these digital cameras and BJ printers than srgb. 2/5
3 Dedicated ICC profiles allow images recorded with extended color gamut in Adobe RGB color space to be printed using the full color reproduction range of BJ printers. Printing Adobe RGB images without the suitable adjustments would result in the substitution of color data outside the srgb color range with srgb colors, resulting in incorrect reproduction of colors on Canon printers, particularly for the colors in the gray region in the sample shown above. This is why dedicated ICC profiles are provided. These dedicated ICC profiles allow color reproduction information for image data to be transferred to the BJ printer with virtually no loss, allowing use of the full BJ printer color reproduction range. Back (#icc) Top of Page (#top) 1. Specifying an ICC Profile within an Application (1) Open the image you want to print in an application. Edit/retouch the image as needed. (2) Check that the correct ICC profile has been assigned, select the item that allows the application to manage colors, then specify the profile for printing. For example, from the Print or Print with Preview screen of Adobe Photoshop, select 'Photoshop Manages Colors', then select a profile as the printer profile. At this time, please clear the 'Black Point Compensation' checkbox. The ICC profiles for Canon photo paper appear as follows. Note: The profile names for other manufacturers' papers will appear differently. (For example: Canon MP640 PR1) (1) Printer model name (2) Media type Each letter pair represents its respective Media type. 4 the Quality setting would be '1'. 2. Opening the Print Settings Screen of the Printer Driver (1) Select the 'Print' command from the application menu. Example: Click File > Print... The Print dialog box appears. (2) Click 'Preferences' (or Properties...). The Print Settings screen of the printer driver appears. 3. Opening the Manual Color Adjustment Dialog Box (1) Select the 'Main' tab. (2) Set the 'Media Type' and 'Print Quality'. (3) Click 'Manual' for Color/Intensity. (4) Click 'Set'... to the right of Manual. The Manual Color Adjustment dialog box appears. 4. Setting the Color Correction (1) Select the Matching tab. (2) Select 'None' for Color Correction. 4/5
