Customer Calibration on the CS650 Family This document provides instructions for a situation where the colors produced by a CS650 system are not what the customer feels is correct, for instance the color does not match what the system produced at an earlier time. The procedure is in three steps: Automatic Machine adjustment Manual Adjustment of the White Point gamma offset adjustment Calibration of the Fiery or Creo Controller Automatic Adjustments for Gray Balance From the CS650 Operation Panel press: Utility/Counter / Machine Admin / System Setting / Expert Adjustment / Execute Adjust Operation Select: Automatic Gamma Adjust Color Registration Adjustment Then press OK and exit to return to the main screen. Adjustment will start. Note: Toner Refresh Mode and Belt Refresh Mode use great quantities of toner and should be avoided in most cases. This adjustment operation takes approximately 10 minutes. The machine displays Ready to Print in the top black message area when the adjustment is complete. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 1

Adjust the Gama Sensor Utility/Counter / Machine Admin / System Setting / Expert Adjustment / Quality Adjustment / 03 Printer Gamma Sensor Adjustment 1. Select the Dot 1 screen first as it is most commonly used in printing Line 1 screen is next most common and used for copying. Complete this procedure for the Line 1 screen as well. 2. Press Copy to output a test chart. Select the tray with the most commonly used paper. 3. Place the test chart on the glass (backed up with 10 sheets of paper) with the green arrow to the left and press Start. The machine will scan the original and make the sensor setting. 4. Select the Line 1 screen, repeat the test chart print, and scan sequence. 5. The machine displays Completed in the top black message area when the adjustment is complete. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 2

Adjust the Gama Offset White Balance It is possible to use the Automatic Gamma Offset Adjustment but the Manual Gamma Offset adjustment will generally give a better copy quality result. A correct Gamma Offset adjustment is critical in assuring that the machine has proper color output. This adjustment should be done for the default Dot 1 screen, the Line 1 screen and any other screen being used for printing or copying. Gamma Offset Adjustment Utility/Counter / Machine Admin / System Setting / Expert Adjustment / Quality Adjustment / 01 Printer Gamma Offset Adjustment Use the Next button to select the Dot 1 screen for adjustment. Dot 1 is the most commonly used as the default screen for printing. This adjustment must be repeated for any other printing or copying screen being used for best color results. Press the Copy button in the upper left to output a test chart for this adjustment. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 3

Gamma Offset Test Chart Gamma Offset Test Target Evaluation Rough Adjustment Use the Gradation Patterns on the left (Roman numeral I) for a ROUGH adjustment of color balance. The gradations for all four colors should fade out evenly between the heavy gray lines marked 1 and 2 in the diagram above. Best to have these patterns a bit darker than lighter, fading out closer to line 2. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 4

Change the numbers in this screen to make the Rough Adjustment. Select the color to adjust by touching Y, M, C or K Use the on screen keypad to enter the value Press Set to apply Repeat for each color A greater number for a color in the adjustment screen will make the gradations darker. A lesser number means lighter. Use both positive and negative numbers. Use the Copy button to run the test target again to check results. When the Rough adjustment is satisfactory with the color bars fading out evenly between the black lines, move on to the Fine adjustment. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 5

Fine Adjustment The objective of the fine adjustment is to make the center block in the tic tac toe target area marked #3 neutral gray AND as close a possible match the monocolor gray area marked #4 (The one even with the red spot). Fold the target so the gray areas to be compared overlap. Without an overlapped, folded direct comparison, making a correct color judgment is nearly impossible. If the center area is not correct, keep folding until you find a square that best matches black monocolor #4. For this procedure Cyan is considered as fixed and the adjustment is to Magenta and Yellow. Use the magenta and yellow gradation stripes at the edge of the tic tac toe area as an aid to make the center box marked #3 neutral gray. Each row and column is a change of 3 points on the adjustment screen. As an example, if the box marked X was folded and found to be a match, Yellow would be reduced by 3 (one column to the left) and Magenta would be reduced by 6 (two rows down). 7/1/ :27:53 AM 6

Need another Screen shot of Gamma offset setting screen like this one Dot 1 with a box and Y and M with a red box Use this screen, same as for entering the rough adjustment values, for entering the color values for the Fine Adjustment. In this example setting screen, Yellow would be reduced by 3, from -6 to -9. Magenta would be reduced by 6 from -16 to -22. Press Y or M to highlight the color to be adjusted. Enter the correct number with the touch screen pad. Select positive or negative with the + /- key Press Set to make the adjustment. Use the Copy button to run the test target again and fold the target to check the results. Repeat this procedure for all screens that are commonly used. Dot 1 is the normal screen used for printing, Line 1 is normal for copying. When this adjustment is complete for all print screens in use, the engine is ready and we can proceed to calibration of the print controller. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 7

IC-303, IC-305 or IC-408 Fiery Controller Calibration Once the print engine is correct, its test targets can be used to calibrate the controller for best color output. The process is similar for both Fiery and Creo controllers; the machine creates a special test chart that is read by a colormeasuring device. For the Fiery controllers the device is the ES-1000 Spectrophotometer. Print the Calibration Measurement Page 1. Open Colorwise Pro Tools and click Calibrator 2. Check that the ES-1000 is selected as a calibration tool. 3. Uncoated (Glossy Off) is the common choice as a media type. If the job you are calibrating for requires Coated or Glossy paper then select that paper type form the drop-down list. 4. Click on Print to output the calibration chart. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 8

5. When printing the calibration chart there are four choices 34 sorted patches on 11 x 17 or larger paper is preferred. The CS650 will be running in an adjustment cycle for 3 to 5 minutes before the chart appears. 6. When the calibration chart is printed, place it with the stripes horizontal on a flat surface with enough room to work. Put 5 to 10 sheets of white paper underneath to prevent the table from affecting the calibration. 7. Make sure the ES-1000 Spectrophotometer is connected and placed correctly in its cradle. 8. Click Measure. The screen below will appear Click OK in this screen. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 9

9. This is the Measurement dialog box that will guide you in measuring the calibration chart. Place the ES-1000 measurement head in the white space to the left of the Cyan strip. Press and hold the black Measure Button on the side of the ES-1000 and wait for a beep or wait for the green background color in the dialog to change to white. Only after the color change, slide the ES-1000 at a slow but consistent pace across the strip. Take about five seconds to slide the length of the strip. Release the Measure Button when all the patches in the strip have been measured and you reach the white space at the end of the strip. When a strip is measured successfully, the dialog background color changes to green, and the cross hair moves to the next color. If the strip is not measured successfully, the dialog background color changes to red, and a message directs you to try again. The most common reason for a failed scan is moving the ES-1000 too fast or too slow. Be sure to wait for the green area to turn white before moving the ES Repeat these steps until all the strips are measured. NOTE: You must measure in the order requested in the Measurement dialog box. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 10

10. When all the patches have been read successfully, click Accept. 11. Click Apply in the Calibrator dialog box. The new calibration measurement is applied. The Apply to all calibration sets checkbox should be checked in most cases, 12. Click OK in the Information dialog box. This completes the Fiery calibration process. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 11

IC-304 Creo Calibration with the DTP34 Densitometer or Eye1 Spectrophotometer Follow the instructions packed with the DTP-34 Densitometer and calibrate it using the black and white test target from the sealed envelope. Return the calibration target to the envelope as it will degrade in bright light. The Eye1 Spectrophotometer does not need target calibration. Warning: DO NOT push the button on the side of the Densitometer or Spectrophotometer unless it is on test material. Pressing the button while pointing the unit at random will make it unusable. From the Creo application main screen, click Tools and then Calibration to see this screen and print the correct test target for calibration measurement: Follow the on screen instructions to scan the target with the DTP-34 or Eye 1 calibration device. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 12

Click and hold while scrolling across the color bars. The screen below appears when the calibration scans are successful. Click Next to apply the calibration. Calibration can be applied to All Media (most common) or to individual types of special paper as required. From the main Creo application screen, clicking on Calibration and Calibrated Media Types will show the date of last calibration. Once calibration is complete, the machine is ready for customer use. 7/1/ :27:53 AM 13
