8 Light in furniture Light within furniture expands the possibilities of permanently installed light sources to create opportunities for personal expression. The result lends itself to individuality and flexibility for the residents. Due to state-of-the-art technologies such as plug and play and low voltage lighting, such systems are now easier than ever to install and use. Display cabinet lighting lights in shelving, cabinets and display cabinets not only provide a perfect overview, it also allows displayed items to be presented in a stylish manner. Drawer lighting for comfort and convenience, drawers with integrated lighting guarantee the correct cutlery choice and adds subtle elegance to premium insert trays, cutlery and utensils. LED strips creatively highlight and accentuate furniture details. Due to minimal space requirement, they are particularly useful to highlight design features such as gaps and shapes within furniture and cabinetry. Built-in spotlights provide directional highlighting of objects in display cabinets and on display shelves. Offering a dramatic or elegant aesthetic to prized possessions or objects on display. 1

9 AMBIENTLighting adj. mood, character, quality, tone, atmosphere Light technology, light effects and light impressions For a fundamental understanding of light, it is important to differentiate between lighting technology, light effects and light impressions. These three different dynamics shape the overall ambience of your environment. Light technology Includes all technical measures to influence the overall lighting effects. It is the technical standard in the planning of lighting. Light effects Describes the interaction of light with colours and materials and how it is perceived. Key in this relationship is the emotional effect of the light. Light impressions This is the personal interpretation and recognition of light in a setting. It is primarily focused on the individual s perceptions of light. 2

10 Light bulbs By definition, this includes all electrical equipment that generates light. In the context of light there are four types that apply: fluorescent, halogen,energy saving bulbs and LEDs. Fluorescent tube Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent tubes or cold cathode are filled with glowing gasses and the interior of the glass tube is coated with fluorescent materials. Both types function in a similar manner and require a starter or ballast (low-loss ballast - electronic ballast). In the smaller compact fluorescent tube the starter and the ballast are typically integrated. Energy saving bulbs Energy saving bulbs are similar in size to incandescent light bulbs but use significantly less energy to generate the same amount of light. However, they are not dimmable and do not achieve the same quality of light as halogen or traditional light bulbs. Usually, compact fluorescent tubes are described as energy saving lamps. Halogen bulbs The difference between halogen bulbs is in the operating voltage of a normal high voltage version and the low voltage version that requires a transformer. In addition there are halogen light bulbs and metal vapour lamps. Halogen bulbs develop high temperatures, but there is no other bulb that achieves the outstanding light qualities of the halogen bulb. LED / RGB LED (Light Emitting Diodes) are called semiconductors. They can vary the characteristics of their light. RGB is a red, green, blue LED light that can nearly achieve the full spectrum of colour. Unlike traditional light bulbs, LEDs emit very little heat, consume little power and have a much higher life expectancy. 3

11 AMBIENTLighting adj. mood, character, quality, tone, atmosphere Parameters for the effects of light Colour temperature (measured in Kelvin) The colour temperature is the measure for the colour impression of a light source, measured in Kelvin (K). The standard for sunny daylight is 5,500 K, in fog approximately 8,000 K and just before sunrise it is up to 12,000 K. Artificial light imitates various light situations: The light emitted by a fluorescent tube achieves a colour temperature of up to 5,000 K, halogen light to 3,000 K and a candle to 1,500 K. Illuminance (measured in Lux) illuminance (commonly called light level) is a term that quantifies light incident on a surface. It is influenced and reduced by the distance of the source. Light Distribution This simplified diagram is intended to act as an aid for the planner and shows the light intensities at a distance of 50 cm, which is applicable to a light in furniture. It was measured in a black box without ambient light with a standard lux metre. Specified is the maximum value in the centre. The eye optically measures how light is absorbed or reflected from various different surfaces. Therefore the light significantly influences how each individual recognises colours, brightness, distances, contrast and finishes. The respective light effect always depends on the interaction between the light source and the object as shown in the following examples. Mood With the availability of pre-programmed light scenarios it is possible to switch back and forth between work light (right) and mood light (left). Contrast Contrast describes the difference between bright and dark areas. Identical light generates more contrast on brighter surfaces and less on dark surfaces (as above). 6

14 Emphasis Should stronger light effects be desired, then the general light should be dimmed. Material Different materials reflect and refract light differently. The light effects are strongly influenced by these choices. Colour Colours are dependent on the light and influence the overall impression of a room. When selecting colours it is important to consider the overall lighting plan. The example shows the impact of identical luminosity: A dark floor (left) reflects less light than a lighter floor (centre). And a colourful floor (right) reflects the colour. 7

Daylight of course plays the largest role. But in living and work environments artificial light sources have a significant effect on atmosphere and quality of life. The flexibility of light in furniture highlights important aspects such as security, accentuation, orientation, information and comfort. Accentuation Modern light in furniture provides the user with the tools to accentuate and highlight individual rooms and furniture items to create unique and personal lighting scenes. 8

16 Comfort Light creates comfort. By using light zones and individual lighting of specific items in a room one creates different zones of well-being and comfort - a very special and valuable aspect of daily living. Information Light as a conveyor of information is an imperative aspect in the planning of furniture and rooms, therefore the illumination of information areas can be accentuated with the purposeful use of light and dark areas. Orientation The basic function of light sources for all users, are as orientation points in a room. By integrating lights into furniture, additional direction and purpose can be conveyed throughout the room - and thereby improving the pure architectural function and aesthetic. 9

21 AMBIENTLighting adj. mood, character, quality, tone, atmosphere The ABC of lighting technology LED s (Light Emitting Diodes) can vary the properties of the light that is generated, and generate almost the entire colour spectrum. Unlike normal light bulbs and halogen lamps, LED s generate little heat. They use less energy and have a long service life. Advantages of LED s Longer Lasting LED lights have an extremely long service life of up to 25 years or up to 50,000 hours. Insensitive LED s have an extremely small and robust design. This makes handling easier during furniture construction and transport. Low Heat Generation Because of their extremely low power consumption, LED lights generate hardly any heat. This means that LED lighting systems are particularly suitable for displays. Energy Saving LED lights use an impressive 90 percent less power than conventional light bulbs! This means that they can be used to implement modern lighting scenarios in furniture, and still be in line with the energy saving trend. Powerful Modern LED lights are bright and have a saturated light colour. They achieve full brightness as soon as they are switched on. LED furniture lighting therefore has a lasting effect at the push of a button. Rich in Variants LED lights are available in different colours, and can be designed as colour changing lights. This allows the light colour to coordinate with the furniture contents such as exhibits in the best way possible. Loox LED Technology The Loox LED technology incorporates different power systems. A system is decided on by choosing the driver or a particular light. The choice of system is an important decision, because the driver that is selected can only be combined with lights from the same system. Spoiled for Choice in the 12V System The LED lights are voltage-controlled and connected in parallel in the 12V system. The plugs on the driver can be freely allocated. 12V lights are the most widespread at present. Powerful 24V System Technically speaking, the 24V system is identical to the 12V system, but has a considerably higher power level. 24V lights can therefore be used when extremely bright lights are required. Technical Terms Light colour/colour temperature The light colour is a specification of the colour appearance of a light source and is measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the Kelvin value, the warmer the light; the higher the value, the cooler the light. Sources below 3200 K are considered "warm", while those above 4000 K are considered "cool" sources. Luminous efficacy The luminous efficacy is the indication of the illuminance in relation to a surface and its distance. It is indicated in Lux (lx).
